A Disney influence in the...White House?

DISNEY CHAIRMAN MITCHELL CONSULTED KERRY ON RUNNING MATE

Dem presidential hopeful John Kerry quietly consulted with DISNEY Chairman George Mitchell over vice presidential picks, it has been learned.

Kerry reached out to Mitchell for advice and counsel on VP options, sources explain. The DISNEY chairman's responsibilities include the ABC-TV Network and ABCNEWS...

Makes sense he has done a bang up job at ABC.

I think it has more to do with the fact in Democratic circles he is considered a well respected former senator.

George Mitchell was appointed chairman of the board, a non-exectuive position, in March '04. I don't believe he has anything to do with the day to day operation of ABC or any other business segment. Anne Sweeny is responsible for ABC and I believe she reports to Eisner.

He is just as responsible as the monkey throwing the darts.

If you're going to boil it down to just ABC ... ABC NEWS is the industry leader, and likely a whole lot more important to the Kerry campaign than are the sitcoms and reality shows.

But even if ABC NEWS wasn't up on top, it's not like they're looking at Mitchell and saying, "Gee ... Touchstone is a pretty cool sitcom producer, let's get Mitchell in here." I would imagine they're looking to him for his wide-ranging political perspective and would have done so whether he was president of Disney's board or not.

It's been true for some time. ABC News is consistently the highest rated nightly newscast, and the news magazines just took a nice number of Emmy nominations and Humanitas awards.
