A Disney Dining Diva's Summer Surprise Dining Report -COSMIC RAY'S *COMPLETE* PAGE 8!

Hi, everyone! We are back from a wonderful trip, and boy, are we FULL! The diet starts today, so I am prepared to drool as I write my DR!

We kept to the schedule as listed in my index...no cancellations or changes, so you will be reading about all of the above-listed experiences. I'm looking forward to sharing with you!

Please stay tuned and be patient as I deal with coming back to the real world...

Yay! You're back! I'm glad Irene didn't ruin too much of your plans :goodvibes

We arrived at CSR at around 10:15 am, stepped up to the the on-line check-in counter, received our folder, and off to our room we went! After quickly freshening up, we decided to go have an early lunch at the Pepper Market (since we would have a very early dinner 4:30 was the latest dinner I could get). It was OK, since we had eaten breakfast at 5am in the airport.

We waited at the restaurant for a few minutes since it is gated closed until 11:30. When the gates opened, we went straight to the line for the mexican selections; we were the first party in line at that pod. Each of us chose something different so we could share. It took quite some time for the food to be prepared, I think at least 20 minutes. As we ordered, we asked for the food "to go" because it was beautiful outside and we wanted to enjoy the view of the lake.

As our food was being prepared, I left Aladdin at the mexican pod and stepped over to the desserts pod with Hercules and Belle so we could choose our desserts (we already knew what Aladdin wanted for dessert). Then the chefs started asking Aladdin questions about our order to which he didn't know the answers, so he got a little frustrated (why were they asking, anyway), but I had the card with me at the other pod. I guess we should have used a separate card? Anyway, I think that confusion might have been a cause for the delay in the food preparation, but the good thing was that everything was clearly prepared very freshly as we watched.

We also got a few bottles of water and a few large diet cokes, and when we told the server who was filling drinks that we wanted them to go, she seemed to get a little ruffled that our meals were on regular plates and asked if we planned to bring the dishes back, we said "of course." She seemed to be talking about us in Spanish to her coworker, but she was very nice and gracious with us...we just felt some annoyance.

The food was overall very good. Here's what we had:

Belle ordered a Chicken Quesadilla:
0830lunch3.jpg

This was very good. It was hot and fresh and nice and cheesy. The chicken was not dry. It was very big and filling. There was plenty for all of us to have a substantial taste.

Aladdin ordered the Steak Ranchero:
0830lunch4.jpg

This was delicious and clearly the winning entree of the Pepper Market. It was cooked medium-rare as ordered, it was lean and tasty. The sauce had just the right amount of heat. The rice and beans were also very flavorful. This was probably the best CS value of the trip, and I wish I had ordered it, because somehow, I only got one bite of Aladdin's ;)! If I ever get back there, I will definitely order this!

I ordered the Market Nachos to share with the table:
0830lunch5.jpg

These were just OK. The chips themselves were actually really good. They were big and fresh with just the right amount of salt, and the chicken, beans and other fixin's were generously apportioned and tasty. I got plenty of jalapenos. That white stuff on the top is watery sour cream. The cheese was also a little too runny. There was plenty of it, but sadly, it was just a little too watery. The server put a very bountiful spoonful on the plate before heaping on the chips and chicken and beans...and I couldn't believe it when she put MORE chips and cheese and chicken and beans...and then asked me if I wanted lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream...yes,yes,yes, oh, and don't forget the jalapenos...please! I was just a little disappointed in the consistency of the cheese. I had plenty of this and so did Aladdin, Hercules and Belle!

Herc ordered the Steak Burrito...pictured here also with his dessert, which was some kind of chocolate cake:
0830lunch2.jpg

This was also very good, and I would order this again, also. I'm pretty sure that is the same sauce that was on the Steak Ranchero. The chocolate cake was good, but I think it looked better than it was. It had a layer of cake on the bottom, then a layer of chocolate mousse (see, that's the problem, I don't like mousse), and on the top a layer of ganache-like icing and whipped cream. The pretty chocolate branch sticking out of it started to curl and melt over the course of our meal.

For our other desserts, Aladdin and I each had a flan:
0830lunch6.jpg

I thought this was really delicious. I adore caramel, and this was one of the better flans I've had. It was very thick, not light and airy like some I've had, but to tell you the truth, I like it that way. Aladdin wasn't too sure if he loved it as much as I did, but I promise you, there was nothing left on his plate.

Belle went with the fruit tart:
0830lunch7.jpg

She loved it! Edited to add: hey, there's a hidden Mickey in the fruit tart!!

Overall, we were quite pleased with the Pepper Market and very full when we rolled on back to our room to discover our luggage had been delivered!

Next up...1900 Park Fare!

Looks really good for a QS place!! Seems like a reason to skip over to CSR for lunch. :rose::flower2::rose::flower2::rose::flower2:

Subbing - I happened to come across your review of CSR this morning and as I want to return to CSR some day, want to read your TR , I saw you said next time you would like to stay in the Casitas section, that is where we stayed on opening day/week back in August of 1997 and loved it!

Welcome back!! Enjoyed your review of Pepper Market eateries. Entrees all look great!

Great start looking forward to more

Thank you!! So glad you are following along. I will try to get 1900 PF up today.

It was a great CS place. Hmmmm...I'm not sure I'd let that be my only reason for visiting CSR, unless you really want the Steak Ranchero...yes, we would go out of our way for that. If you are at a park and want to escape for a little while without going "home," CSR has terrific bus service and easily accessible from any park. But I would say we found at least 1 QS restaurant everywhere that is just as good as PM (but not as expensive). The prices of the entrees make eating here a good deal on the DDP, especially the Steak Ranchero. If you want to take some time to explore CSR because you are curious about the resort and possibly interested in staying there in the future, then a meal at PM would be the icing on the cake...I hope that makes sense?

Yay, another reader! Thank you for joining. That must have been awesome, Casitas at opening!

Yes, especially the steak! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Thank you for reading, and please stay tuned.

Happy to see entrees from Pepper Market. We haven't tried there yet, but hopefully we will go in December.

Thanks for the wonderful pics. I was kind of impressed with the size of the portions!

I was kind of impressed with the size of the portions!

We kept saying the same thing. With the exception of 1 QS that I had from Yorkshire in the UK pavillion (could have used 1 more piece of fish and a lot more chips, and no large sodas were available), portion size was always more than adequate.

Some meals were just so great...but I'll let my lovely DW expound on that...

You're welcome! We were actually really surprised with some of the portion sizes, too. When I thought of it, I tried to include props to offer an idea of relative sizes. Thanks for reading, and please stay tuned!

I would say that portions sizes were ENORMOUS in most cases...and believe me, I have a huge appetite! Most days we just had CS lunch and TS dinner and didn't even look for snacks in between. Of course, we did eat our snacks, for the sake of tasting the goodies WDW has to offer. I agree with you, Hubby, the meal at Yorkshire looked smaller than the snacks we got at many other places. FYI for the readers, the kids and I skipped that lunch in favor of trying something new...more on that to come!

The Pepper Market looks like a place I would like to try - thanks for sharing your reviews - looking forward to more!

YAY! Trying Pepper Market for the first time and am ALL ABOUT Mexican food. Now I have to decide which way item to order! They all look good!

Glad to hear that you were able to change your plans around Irene. We were already in FL when she hit up here. Very scary.

We booked bounceback to stay at CSR next year. Love the review of Pepper Market! We are rarely at the Resort for a meal but may have to make an exception next year!

Yes, it is definitely worth a try, especially for the Mexican food lover! You're welcome, and thanks for reading.

If you like steak, I highly recommend the Steak Ranchero. It was not your average kind of fast-food mexican entree. The other entrees we tried, while very good, were easier to come by at other places.

I was thinking about you during the storm, believe it or not! I know upstate got hit even worse than we did down here. If we had been in WDW during the hurricane, DH would have been a wreck worrying about the house and the yard and all of the fire calls he would have missed. We really lucked out that it all timed out the way it did. I hope you didn't have any damage to your home or neighborhood!

You are a lucky duck to have booked bounceback! You will find a great value in the CSR with free dining. I imagine you will really enjoy CSR and the PM. Sadly, we can't plan a trip for next year, with Belle's college plans (and how we're going to pay for it) all up in the air right now!

We have a tradition of eating our first lunch at our resort's QS restaurant. We like to arrive early, eat an early lunch and enjoy the pool on arrival day. I'm glad we got a chance to try the PM. We would absolutely do it the same way again...and again...without a drop of hesitation.

This was our first time trying 1900 Park Fare, and we were lucky to score an ADR here, especially since we changed to dates last minute. I had been trying for a few months to replace my ADR for 8/29 to an earlier time, with no luck, and when I first rescheduled the trip, nothing was available for PF on the 30th at all. Well, right before my power went out on Sunday am (due to Irene), I was able to book PF for 4:45 pm on the 30th.

We made our way over to the GF a little early just to be sure we arrived on time. Let me tell you, the transportation from CSR to everywhere was AMAZING, and we arrived at GF way earlier than we had anticipated (we took the bus to MK and the monorail to GF). We spent some time wandering around, listening to the band on the balcony of the lobby, browsing the shops, and we came to the shocking conclusion that we would really like to stay there some day!:scared1: This is shocking because we are die-hard Poly people who thought we really had no interest whatsoever in the theme of the GF, but spending a little while there, we were really impressed by the beauty and elegance, while at the same time...extremely relaxing atmosphere. Hercules, the musician, especially is really into it. He says that any resort with a live band in the lobby is his kind of place. I also had time to stop at the concierge desk to pick up my tickets for the HDDR the next night. We found all the staff members we encountered there to be very inviting, and didn't get any sense of that "stuffiness" we often read about on forums.

Anyway, we had a 4:45 ADR and we checked in at about 4:30. We were taken right away to our table...through the dining room to that annex room on the side. I politely asked the hostess if it would be possible to wait for a table in the main dining room, as we didn't want to miss any entertainment. She assured me that we wouldn't miss anything, and in fact, the characters would reach us faster if we sat in that room, but I explained that we were not in any hurry and would rather sit longer and enjoy a slow meal and be in the main dining room. I emphasized that we would be happy to wait. She used a little walkie-talkie type thing and got us a tbale in the dining room, and we were so happy!

So Aladdin started off his first vacation dinner with an Eco-tini:
0830supper1.jpg

He liked it, but I think it was a little sweeter than he had expected. It came with a cute bracelet that we both like.

I went with my now traditional Magical Star Cocktail:
0830supper2.jpg

So yummy, and beautiful, too! This was was blinking all the colors!

To be honest, we weren't very impressed with most of the food on the buffet. I took a few pictures, which I will share, and try to list the selections here. If I don't comment, none of us tried it. There was Caesar Salad and mixed baby greens salad with dressing on the side, seafood salad, 3 kinds of sushi rolls (these were great, we all went back for more!), green beans (good), coq au vin (sauce yummy, chicken dry), chicken marsala (not sure why they had both chicken marsala and coq au vin, we only tasted the french variety?), stir-fried beef with vegetables, baked salmon with creamy dill sauce (very good!), seafood jambalaya (OK), carved beef (pretty good, various stages of well-ness, love it with the horseradish sauce), turkey, pork (looked dry), and 3 kinds of soups - strawberry (out-of-this-world, but tasted more like a dessert, a melted vanilla with strawberry topping Carvel sundae), tomato florentine (good) and chicken noodle. There was some kind of pasta dish that did not look good, maybe it was a bolognese sauce? There was also a kids' section with mashed potatoes, roasted or baked chicken (not nuggets), mac & cheese (Stouffer's style, same as most places in WDW - we like it like this) and pizza.

For dessert, there was bread pudding with vanilla sauce (this was a little bit dry but very tasty, tasted like good french toast), rice crispy treats, brownies, a variety of tarts (Aladdin liked the key lime well enough), carrot cake (those who tried really liked this).

Here are the photos I took.

Coq au vin:

Sushi pieces (best item on buffet, which ain't saying much) and carved beef with horseradish sauce:

Herc's plate of comfort food, mostly from kids' section. You can also see they had rolls, and that is the tomato florentine soup:

Belle's plate of sushi, potatoes and strawberry soup:

Aladdin's mashed potatoes, beef, pork (exceptionally dry), green beans, sushi and strawberry soup:

So that's the food. But we really came here for the characters...they were FANTASTIC! We are so happy we tried this place, because we just loved the interaction and had tons of laughs. I like to really egg them on, and I asked Cinderella if Prince Charming's REAL name was "Charming" in ear shot of Lady Tremaine. So she came over and started making fun of me for caring about the name of...a cartoon! Later, Drizella was flirting with Hercules and he was teasing her about how he buys and sells castles for a living, and she was trying to convince him to talk to her mother to make marriage arrangements. She said a rich guy with multiple castles was much better than a prince with only one castle. When Anastasia was at our table, our mortgage broker called (of course we had been playing phone tag and with the hurricane all business had stopped before we left for vacation), and when I answered, she started yelling into the phone "She's on vacation, there's a reason she didn't invite you!" We all had tears streaming by the end of the meal. We had a real ball and got some hysterical photos...which sadly I am not allowed to share for privacy reasons. Trust me, it was great!

I imagine we might go back to 1900 PF if/when we ever stay at GF again. The food was passable, we didn't leave hungry, but the characters made the experience. We wouldn't go out of our way for this one, though, when there are so many other wonderful experiences waiting to be enjoyed, but we are so glad we did it once!

I just saw this; I'm off to bed now, but subscribing and back to catch up tomorrow.

***All caught up now.

I am so happy that you enjoyed your meal at the Pepper Market (it has a real love/hate relationship with people).

We've never been to 1900 so I appreciate seeing your review. Without having young kids any more, we tend to only do one character meal and for me it has to be Crystal Palace for Tigger and Pooh.
