A Disney-addicted mom braves the August (2010) heat! *11/28 Update!*

Hey Amanda- all caught up! I've been sooo busy between editing wedding pics and last minute trip prep that I just haven't had much time to be on the DIS. :rolleyes1:

Wish I had time to comment more but really just popping in- sounds like another great day!

Thank you!!!! And welcome! We had a wonderful trip and can't wait to return. We didn't take full advantage of the stroller as wheelchair but we used it more as the trip went on (you'll hear more about it on our AK day, for example). I'm always worried about "abusing the system." I know it's stupid but it's just how I am. Being able to take the stroller in the Land pavilion at Epcot is great, especially with a sleeping child. Otherwise one parent would have waited outside with the little guy while the big kids went on Soarin'. I'm sure as his motor skills and strength improve, we'll be less likely to need the stroller as wheelchair. I also suspect that we'll be bringing a stroller to Disney for him for many more years!

Amanda

My son is 11 and to see him you wouldn't really know he has cp except for when he wears shorts his afo's are noticeable and if he has his shirt off you can see his feeding tube. But endurance, heat, sleep or just travelling can really take its toll on him. He uses his wheelchair when we go to Disney. He saves his energy for the important things like riding rides;)But he also walks in between a little too. The looks we get are priceless:eek: But we have to do what we have to do. :)

We're waiting for Zachary's orthotics to be ready. :sad2: It's taking long enough that I think he'll probably outgrow them before he ever wears them! I was surprised more people didn't give us a hard time about having a stroller in The Land pavilion. :confused3

I'm going to try to remember the rest of our trip! :thumbsup2
Thursday we decided to go to Animal Kingdom. This is definitely my least favorite of the parks. While there are some good things to do at AK, it just doesn't have the same "wow" factor as the other parks. At least for me. Part of the problem is that we live 20 minutes from the Bronx Zoo and we're members there. The Bronx Zoo is wonderful and we really enjoy going. For that reason the animal parts of AK aren't as special. I like the trails and Rafiki's but we can see a lot of it back home.

We got up Thursday morning and the kids decided that we should wear our matching shirts again. I tried to make a bigger breakfast for the kids. I felt like we weren't eating enough in the mornings. After eating eggs and toast and (frozen) pancakes, we were ready to head out. We had a short wait for the bus. The kids had their assignments of what to carry and we managed to get seats. Not as hectic as our MK bus experience! We missed rope drop by about 15-20 minutes. Not bad!

We headed over to Kilimanjaro Safari first. We really had an amazing trip.

I honestly don't remember seeing quite that many animals on previous trips. :confused3

We wandered along one of the trails (can't remember which one), took a photopass pic, and heading towards Lion King.

We got to FOTLK right before show-time. We used the Stroller = Wheelchair here. This worked out great! We had front-row seats. There was a little girl and her mother sitting with us. The girl was about 3 and wearing a Snow White dress. She was obviously being chosen as a "special guest" because they kept making a big deal out of her. (Maybe they had opened the park???) Anyway, I love this show. It's one of my favorites at Disney and one of the main reasons to go to AK. Jessica was given the opportunity to dance during the last part of the show but she turned all shy on me. ;) Oh, and Zachary totally fell asleep in his stroller during the show. Poor kid!!! That made having the stroller = wheelchair worth its weigh in gold!!!

After the show we decided to head over to Kali River Rapids. I had never been on this ride (I stayed with Zachary the last time that Tom and the kids rode). Zachary was still sleeping in the stroller. We went to the CM and requested a baby swap. She asked about our t-shirts (Perry the Platypus and they say, "yes, yes we are..." which is a quote from Phineas and Ferb). We explained the meaning of the shirts and got our Baby Swap pass. Zachary and I went for a walk while Tom and the kids rode. I didn't know this until later but the nice CM apparently gave Tom and kids a 2nd baby swap pass so they could go straight into the FP line without riding stand-by (and I hesitate to even write that because I'm sure it'll stir up major controversy if that info leaks out widely enough). I think it pays to be friendly and nice! :flower3:

Zachary stayed asleep the whole time and we wandered around the area. Nothing too excited to see or do in the immediate vicinity, especially with a sleeping toddler. I did stop in the DVC booth to ask some questions (we've been considering DVC on and off for 3 years!). The DVC guy recognized Tom by the matching t-shirt. :thumbsup2 The kids were soaked and ready to ride again with me. And Zachary slept on....

We used the baby swap pass and got on quickly (for the record, the stand-by line was pretty short anyway). Luckily both kids are tall enough that we didn't need the special seats (if you're under 38 inches there are 2 special seats that you can use). The kids sat together and I was by myself. The ride was really fun and refreshing on a hot AK day! We were totally soaked!!! We exited the ride and found Tom and Zachary sitting near a little water play area. We sat on a bench to re-group. I didn't see Nathaniel but Tom had said he was playing in the water. This didn't sound like typical Nathaniel behavior but Tom said he'd seen him. We decided to head over to Rainforest Cafe for lunch (Tom had called for an ADR that day). I went to get Nathaniel and he wasn't there.

We had probably been sitting for 3-4 minutes at that point and Nathaniel was NOWHERE to be found. When we got off the ride he told me that he wanted to go back to BC to get dry clothes so I was worried that he had headed to the front of the park. Tom left me with Jessica and Zachary and went and found a CM. The CM had a very laid-back attitude (which didn't make me feel any better at all!). Tom went searching the whole area to no avail. :scared1: Another CM came over to help. She called the lost child center and they didn't have Nathaniel. I told her that I was worried that Nathaniel would try to leave the park to get dry clothes. (And he's the kind of kid who could and would do that!) That was the first time a CM looked nervous. Eventually (maybe after 10 minutes) the CM and Tom found Nathaniel. He had taken he's Who's Shoe ID off his shoe and was looking for someone to call us. Between that and the matching shirts, the CM instantly knew it was him.

I think I lost 10 years off my life at that moment! I was SO worried!!!! I was also a little unimpressed with the way Disney handled our lost child. I'm sure that lots of kids get lost but they didn't instill confidence. My mom lost Nathaniel at the Lego Store last year (at DTD) and the store personnel immediately put out a walkie-talkie alert. The manager walked around looking for Nathaniel (making it sound like he's won a prize!). They were SO helpful and concerned. At AK it felt like they didn't think it was a big deal and he'd just turn up. Thank God he was ok!!!

After that drama we headed to Rainforest for lunch. Unfortunately we were all soaked (note to self: Don't ride Kali right before a meal!). I like Rainforest Cafe despite some not so good reviews. The salad I had was huge and yummy. They have the most extensive children's menu I've ever seen (the kids loved the mini hot dogs). The server was nice and it was a good way to recover from our trauma.

After lunch we headed to Dino Land. Tom took the big kids on Dinosaur and Zachary and I rode Triceratop Spin (is that what it's called?). Unfortunately Zachary had a small poop explosion and was left without wearable shorts. I searched every store around for a pair of toddler shorts (for which I would have been willing to spend a ridiculous amount of $$$) and gave up. Zachary was left with a t-shirt and diaper. White trash baby it was! :rotfl2: We met the gang at the end of Dinosaur. Jessica was not pleased by her ride experience (I've never been on Dinosaur). The kids bought some Vinylmations at the store and we headed out.

What a scary moment:scared1: I can also see my youngest deciding he was going to get dry clothes and just heading to leave. He is always taking off without me. Anyway, I'm glad you were able to find him, but I'm sure it seemed like an eternity.

Oh my gosh how scary!! When we were at US in July a little boy had lost his parents. I took him over to a cm and explained to them where he las saw them. The cm was so calm and really took her time and kept cashing people out at her register then finally called security. I was not happy and told her could she please call them quickly!!?? He was bawling his eyes out poor guy. The cm told me he would stay with her and that I could go on. I was half tempted to just stay there but it was pouring and she had him under her umbrella thing and my family was in the rain so we headed on out. I was really unimpressed.

That is awsome how the cm let them ride again quickly.I think anytime you get a little "extra" Disney Magic on your trip it just makes it that much more special.;) Yay for your matching shirts! I am trying to get our family some matching shirts but I have no idea what to put on them just yet. I better get busy cause time is going by fast!

Love the photopass pics!

How scary that must have been. It's nice to know that Nathaniel is old enough that he knows what to do though. I have heard less than stellar lost child stories at disney before. DH and I have always discussed that at least at the parks other than Epcot there's only one exit, so our plan has been that one parent would go to the exit and one would stay and look for the kid.

I'm glad you had a nice lunch to recover. It's a shame that disney does not keep shoes and shorts and t-shirts in stock for any size! Don't they realize that this type of thing happens a lot!

FOTLK is the best. Apparently it's soothing, since Zachary fell asleep!

Sounds like you had a great time on Kali. I dislike getting wet, so I've never been on it, but J.J. might go on it with DH this time.

Great photopass pictures as well, that second one is very cute!

OMG!!! I just have to laugh at the white trash baby comment. My DS2 played at the water fountain area at Epcot and that was the ONLY day I didn't bring a change of clothes. He can't stand to wear wet clothes so I left him in just a diaper with his shirt/shorts hanging on the stroller to dry. At least your son had a shirt on. :lmao:

Oh, wow, I would not have been impressed with AK if they handled a missing child like that! True, they don't need to feed into fear, but they ought to be reassuring and make it a priority to find him!
We're not huge AK fans, either. For such a big park, I feel like it doesn't have enough to do.

Wow, Amanda! I bet the incident where Nathaniel was missing does not move AK up the ladder to be one of your favorite parks. Everyone's stories are not very reassuring to parents worried about being separated from their kids at Disney. Sounds like Nathaniel handled it the best of all- he knew what to do!

I had one minor incident of a misplaced child at Disney. We were in the Tiki Birds waiting area. My DH had gone to get FP for Buzz Lightyear. I was there with my friend, her mother, her son (6), my son (6), her son (5), my son-Ben (3), her daughter (2). I was trying to keep track of all the kids when all of a sudden I couldn't see Ben! It was a few seconds before I realized I was holding him!

Great shirts!!! I can see why you got lots of comments!

I'm glad you were able to regroup and still make the best of the rest of your day there.

Nathaniel is - for better or for worse - a very determined and capable child!

We were pretty surprised by how Disney handled this. This isn't our first time losing a child (yes, I know. Parent of the year award) so we have some expectations. At DTD last year they mobilized quickly at the report of a lost child. We even lost a child at Target several weeks ago and they knew exactly how to handle it! :confused3

We legitimately had Baby Swap passes for the 2nd ride but we didn't have FPs for the 1st time. She gave us 2 Baby Swap passes so that acted like having FPs.

Love the photopass pics!

Thank you.

We're pros at losing our kids! Jessica's wandered off a few times at local carnivals and the town pool. We have her pretty well trained now so she knows exactly what to do. Nathaniel's been lost at DTD, AK, and Target in the past 18 months. Impressive, huh? :scared1: This was the 1st time we had a lost child where I felt that the "powers that be" did little to nothing to help us.
Thanks for the compliments on the shirts. The kids enjoyed having the matching shirts!
We're pretty good at rolling with the punches (if you knew what my daily life is like, you'd better understand that!). Nathaniel was a bit shaken but totally unharmed. After lunch he totally perked up and was ready for some fun!

Hey all! I'm heading back to San Francisco for another work conference on Thurs. I have a brand-new iPad so I'm going to try to work on some updates if I can figure out how to use the darn thing!

Not that I'm trying to get into a competition or anything, but I posted my most benign child-loss story. My others, interestingly enough, involve Nathan. Something in the same, perhaps???

Lost him in a gift shop at the Philadelphia Zoo once. Actually, did not even know he was missing. When the kids were younger, I used to make up cards that had my name and cell phone number on them. I instructed the kids to go to an employee, or a mother with kids, and show them the card if they can't find me. I'm looking at shirts and I hear someone calling out "Dee, Dee!"

At least Nathan listened!

Another time I lost him at the beach. For about 10 minutes! :confused3 I always tell the kids to go to a lifeguard if they got lost at the beach, so I was watching the lifeguard chair, but no Nate. Finally, I went the lifeguard, he mobilized the guards all along the beach, and they found him. He wasn't lost- he had found a family he knew from t-ball and was talking to them!

PS- EVERY 7 year old boy on the beach was wearing a black bathing suit, so from then on, it has been bright colors for my kids.

So looks like I'll be right there next to you at the Mother of the Year awards ceremony. Hope it is in Orlando this year!!!

Have a great time in San Fran. Will you get to see any sights?

I'm catching up from last weekend and what a scare!!! I used to work at the kids discovery club (next to the DVC booth in Asia across from yak n yetti) and out of all the clubs, that one we had the most lost children at! I think there is just so much to see and do in the area plus the area is small and it can go in 3 directions so it's easy for kids to get lost :( Glad you found DS!!!

Have fun at your conference!

Thanks! It was fun but exhausting!!!

I'm glad that I'm not the only bad mom who loses children! :lmao: It actually makes me feel much better.

PS I'm having trouble using the DIS on my iPad so I'm really behind. I'll try to get caught up as my jetlag improves...

Oh my! Just catching up and reading about that scary moment! I lost Jace at Six Flags once so I know how awful that can be. They weren't very helpful there either and it took way too long to find him. I'm glad you found him so quickly!

(BTW, I started a TR, the link is in my sig.)

Ok. I need to re-cap a bit (for myself I think!). We'd just left AK after losing Nathaniel, having lunch at Rainforest Cafe, and discovering that Dinosaur is not a ride that we have to try again.

We hopped on the bus back to BCV. If I recall correctly, there was one family in line ahead of us for the bus and one woman on an ECV who was waiting at the ECV entrance to the bus. The line started filling a bit. A large family decided that they didn't have to get in line so they stood next to the line at the front. The family in front of us told us that this other family had done this before (apparently they had been on the same bus the previous day). The dad of the 1st family in line explained to the other family that there was, in fact, a line for the bus and they should feel free to get in line rather than trying to cut the whole line. The family got all huffy. Sometimes I just hate people. The line wasn't that long so they would get on the bus but might not get seats (which is what happened). How are you more important than the rest of us???

The bus made several stops before reaching BC. As the bus emptied out we had an opportunity to talk to the ECV woman. It turns out that she's a Dis-er and a DVC member. She was lovely and we really enjoyed talking to her. I don't remember her name (she was wearing a birthday button so I saw her name) but it was really a pleasure meeting her.

Upon reaching our room we found this:

Aren't we lucky??? :thumbsup2

Tom decided to take the big kids to the pool while I put on a movie for Zachary. This was our "date night" so I took a shower and dressed up. The babysitter (Kids Nite Out) arrived before Tom and the kids returned (I was a bit annoyed at Tom for this but it was ok). I had already made dinner for the kids (Mickey mac n cheese that I bought at Marketplace) so they changed out of bathing suits and ate while Tom got dressed. The babysitter was about my age with 2 pre-teen sons at home. I think she does this to earn extra cash (and she says she misses having little ones at home!). She was FABULOUS! She did arts and crafts with the kids (they made paper bag puppets - she must have brought all the supplies with her) and they had a great time (and they were all sound asleep when we got home!).

I'll update on dinner in a sec. Kids need me....

Amanda

Date Night:

We always try to have a date night when we're on vacation. I try to pick a restaurant near the hotel so I'm not too far away. Even though KNO babysitters are bonded and all that, they're still strangers and it makes me nervous enough to stay close. When we stayed at the Contemporary we ate at California Grill (yum!). This time I chose Bluezoo.

We walked over to the Dolphin (or is it the Swan? I can never remember which is which!). The restaurant was amazingly empty. Our waiter was fabulous. Young, passionate about food and wine but never snobby at all. You can choose between a la carte ordering or doing a tasting menu. Tom doesn't eat pork so we had to make sure the tasting menu was pork-free. Again, the waiter was fabulous. He said that he was sure there was no obvious pork on the tasting menu but wanted to make sure there was no hidden pork (like lard) in the dishes. My DH isn't savvy enough to know to ask about lard so I was quite impressed! (My DH has a "don't ask, don't tell" approach to avoiding hidden pork.)

We opted for the tasting menu and asked about the wine pairings. The waiter again impressed me. He said for the cost of the wine pairings we could get a much better bottle of wine and he recommended a very nice bottle of wine. The food was delicious. Each course was small but filling and we were stuffed by the end. For dessert we did one dessert offering and one cheese plate. Again, yum! I was surprised by how empty the restaurant was but he told us it is packed during convention season. This restuarant was very comparable to California Grill only I preferred Bluezoo. I hated the noise levels at California Grill and this restaurant was very peaceful.

After dinner we wandered over to Swan (or were we at the Swan and went to the Dolphin???) to meet a friend of mine at Kimono's. He's a pediatric urologist that I know well and he practices in Celebration. I didn't realize we were meeting right at Karaoke time but we enjoyed the performances. I got coffee (couldn't imagine another drink!) but we had a nice opportunity to sit and catch up. Tom doesn't know many of my pediatric urology friends since he usually stays home with the kids when I go off to conferences so it was nice for him to meet someone (we both think my friend is gay so there was no issue with jealousy or anything!). All in all a fun night!!!

We headed back to BCV, paid the babysitter, and crashed!
