A DISers Book Club!

Not sure if anyone has seen the site "Free Books" but it is just what it says and they offer the books in several download versions, including Kindle/Mobi.

Here is the link:

I just started The Last Song by Nicolas Sparks...its really good.

My two favorite books that I read in 2009 were both older, one more so than the other.

Earlier this year I read "Then We Came to the End" by Joshua Ferris. I think it was released in early to mid-2007, so not very old.

It's about an ad agency that is dealing with layoffs. The characters have to deal with still doing their job with the scary possibility of being fired at any minute hanging over their head. Granted, it sounds like a downer, but the book is very funny and is well written.

I also read "Replay" by Ken Grimwood. I guess this is somewhat of a sci-fi classic, although I had never heard of it, much less read it. It's about 20 years old, I think.

The main character dies in his early 40s and wakes up 25 years earlier as a college student. He gets a chance to live his life again. And this happens over and over again.

I'm sorry I missed reading this sooner. I absolutely loved it. I've read a lot of great books, but this one is in the discussion of favorite of all time. It was that good.

I just picked up "Replay" from my local library. I like sci-fi so this is right up my alley. Right now I'm reading "Soul Identity" by Dennis Batchelder. Amazon has this for the Kindle for 1 cent--can you believe that deal? Wish I had a Kindle--maybe next Christmas... Basically it's about a security expert that is helping a company that can track souls through their eyes solve a crisis. It's kinda like a mystery mixed with a little sci-fi. So far I'm really enjoying it. The characters are interesting and the humor thrown in is done well. If you have a Kindle, I would say get it for a penny. How cool is that??!!

I am loving My Life in France.

Now I have a dilemma.

I want to move to France, but I want to move there in 1949.:)

I have no idea how much of this book is cold, hard, fact......but she paints a very romantic picture of Paris in the late 40s early 50s and it's obvious that she was very much in love with her husband and he with her.

I'm finding great joy in this book.

Kevin, Have you started to read Cast Member Confidential yet?

I just finished it and I thought it was interesting but it wasn't anything that I was really that shocked about.

I am curious to see what you and others think.

I am planning on reading this on my drive to Miami tomorrow. Should be an interesting read. Loving my new kindle :thumbsup2

Have not started it.

I'm savoring mid-century Paris.

I have Cast Member Confidential on my iPhone but haven't had a chance to read it. I hope it is better than some of the reviews.

I loved My Life in France - way more than i expected to. The relationship that Julia and her husband had was amazing and their back story (their work during WWII) was very intriguing.

I'm currently working my way back through the Outlander series (Gabaldon). If you like historical romance, aren't daunted by long books, and aren't intimidated by the concept of time travel, you should read this series.

I read the first one years (i.e., decades) ago and have jumped around through the next three over the years, but there are now seven of them, so I started over to work my way all the way through to the newest one that just came out this past fall. I'm reading on my Kindle now, of course, so it's so much easier to manage than a 700+ page book.

She does get bogged down in the details of the history every once in awhile, especially in the second book, but they are generally good reading.

I wouldn't mind bumping into Jamie Fraser (the very Scottish protaganist) in real life either. ;)

I found this great synopsis of the first six books in the series online...

  1. Outlander (1991) introduces the main characters of Claire Beauchamp Fraser and Jaime Fraser, and is set in 18th century and 20th century Scotland.
  2. Dragonfly in Amber (1992) continues the story and is set in 18th century Scotland and France, and 20th century America. The plot involves the 1745 Rising and the Battle of Culloden.
  3. Voyager (1993) moves the story from Scotland to America, via the West Indies.
  4. Drums of Autumn (1997) continues the series in America, beginning with 1767 Charleston through 1770.
  5. The Fiery Cross (2001) is set in the United States and covers the pre-Revolutionary War period from 1770 to 1772.
  6. A Breath of Snow and Ashes (2005) begins in 1772 and carries us through to the eve of the Revolutionary War.

7. An Echo in the Bone (2009) is new and has gotten some poor reviews, so I'm a little concerned, but I'll make it there (and through it) eventually.

Dodie - I love the Outlander series but have not read the most recent. I have found it very hard to read recently, maybe this will motivate me. I will have to check it out.

I just caught up on everyone's reccomondations, and I am soooo glad that this thread is here!!! I got a generous Amazon gift card for Christmas, so now I won't feel guilty downloading books to my Kindle instead of checking them out of the library!!! Now all I have to do is find more time to read! :upsidedow

Thanks, everyone, for all of the great items to put on my list!

Cast Member Confidential is disappointing. I am pretty sure he got some of the facts wrong but I think he is not a good writer. I also think anytime you mention Disney people want to read the backstage stuff.

I keep waiting for it to get better but I am almost finished.

I agree about Castmember Confidential. I am almost done, too and I keep waiting for it to get better - or at least more coherent.

That's how I felt about Mercury Falls. It was a cheap download to my Kindle (either .99 or 1.99) and it had rave reviews. It just didn't do anything for me. I wanted to like it, but I just didn't. I finally gave up when I was 90% finished.

I picked up a book today. Jane Bites Back it is a what if Jane Austin was a live and a Vampire...I am about 4 chapters in it is interesting...I will see what happens

Thanks for the review of Cast Member Confidential.
The author must have friends. Amazon has five five-star reviews!
One says "Great writing making this book hard to put down".

Wish I visited the boards last night...I downloaded Castmember Confidential just before going to bed. I was going to start it today!

I just finished reading Vanish by Tom Pawlik and Look Again by Lisa Scottoline. I was pleasantly surprised by Vanish. It's definitely not something I would normally read, but it was a free Kindle download, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I really enjoyed it and flew through it. Look Again was okay, too. I'm not usually a fan of her books, but my sister-in-law gave it to me, so I figured I'd give it a shot...nothing great, but certainly nothing bad, either.

I also read Big Man by Clarence Clemons, and while I loved it, I guess you'd have to be an East Street Band fan to really enjoy it! :)

I finished Cast Member Confidential. I was bothered by the fact he couldn't get the facts right. Of course others might not see all the errors but when the book starts there is a glaring one.

I just finished Twilight on my new Christmas present -the Sony Reader. I love being able to download all the free library books I want.
