In a short sentence--it wasn't as good as the last time we ate there.
Our dinner was set for 8:00 and we arived at about 10 minutes until the hour. The place wasn't nearly as crowed as the first time we went, and we were seated right away. Sadly, we were in a "non-entertainment" area of the restaurant, with no view of the band/dancer. In fact, we couldn't even hear the band all that well. There appear to be several areas of the restaurant with that lack of view, so if anyone simply MUST see the entertainment, it's best to ask for such a table and then be prepared to wait.
One thing you can count on in an Irish Pub and that is good beer. I was able to order a Smithwicks--the others in our party ordered wine and a black russian. Irish Soda Bread was served on the side and for me anyway, soda bread is soda bread-not something I really crave.
For an appetizer, I ordered the Scallop Forest. This was 6 medium scallops all served on their own forks, sticking up from the plate. Presentation exceeds taste in this case--the scallops were pretty bland, and the batter seemed to just totally peel off the scallops as I was trying to eat. So I had "bare" scallops!!! This appetizer is described for "two".. I was able to handle the whole thing myself, with no problem.
The other 3 persons in our group all had the soup of the day--Cream of Celery. May not sound all that inviting, but all 3 said it was quite good.
Entree-wise 2 of us did well, and the two others did not. I was one who did pretty well. I got the Bangers and Mash, which was two Irish sausages served with a bit of onion and a bit of beef stew. Very tasty, if not an overly large portion. I could have eaten a couple more. The other "plus" entree was the Chicken Pie. Nice pieces of white meat in a fresh baked crust. Large enough serving so that the lady could not finish it.
The two entree "misses" were the Fish and Chips, and the Raglan Romaine Salad with Shrimp. The salad had enough shrimp (7 of them I think). Unfortunately, they were battered the same way as my scallops--bland, and the batter all came off as soon as you put one on a fork. Then you're eating bare shrimp!
The Fish and Chips was a major disappointment. It LOOKs impressive when they bring it out in that "cone" server, but that is 3/4 filled with french fries (again, very bland) and ONE piece of fish. A bad deal for $16.95. My friend agreed with what I had said earlier--had much better at Arthur Treachers.
Only two of us wanted dessert, and we both got that Bread and Butter Pudding. Still quite good (and plenty of it) but not quite as "smooth" and buttery as last time.
I should add that our service was good and prompt, and there were tons of kids (of all ages) in the restaurant. We had 9 chilldren sitting in the four tables nearest us!!
Overall experience was a "C". Raglan is a good spot for some entertainment and Irish pub grub--sitting at the bar would probably be nice. But for a good meal, there are better places to eat. We'll skip Raglan Road next trip.
