My ds had his four wisdom teeth out this morning. Is his lip and mouth area still supposed to be numb? When does that typically wear off? he had his surgery at about ten this morning.

Is the numbness one-sided or non-symetric?

I only ask because (probably don't want to hear this) when I had my wisdom teeth removed, the roots were so deep that a nerve in my lower right side jaw was damaged. I remember my numbness went away late in the day elsewhere but not the lower right side jaw. That area remained numb, from about the middle of my lower lip, down to my chin, and half-way up the right jaw. The numbness remained for days, so I went to my surgeon who said this could be permanent since a nerve was damaged and no way to know if it regenerates or not. Fortunately the numbness didn't interfere with speech or chewing, but it felt weird to have no feeling in part of my face. :(

I was extremely fortunate that about 6 weeks later, the nerve started healing (first noticed a pins-and-needles feeling) and continued to heal until back to normal. :) I was very lucky! Sorry to share a worse-case senario! But prolonged numbness can mean problems. :(

But of course, I hope by the time you read this that your DS already regained feeling and is feeling much better, and my post is all a moot point! :)

It's different for everyone. It's the way your body metabolizes the local.

When I had mine out a few weeks ago, I had extra....I asked for it. (Dentist is my boss)

I had them out about the same time as him, and was numb when I went to bed that night!

I hope he heals as well as I did, I was fine in the morning!

Actually, I'm so glad you posted your experience. i posted my question and went downstairs. Ds mentioned that his lip started tingling and itching and the feeling is getting stronger as the evening goes on. So I think we're getting feeling back. I'm just so worried about him. I hate that he's in any pain or discomfort.

Glad to hear it!! When I had the nerve damage, the numbness was pretty complete - no feeling at all along my right chin and jaw for 6 weeks or so. So if he's feeling something already, that's a good sign he's on the mend. :)

Hope he gets back to his old self very soon! Wisdom teeth removal can be tough, that's for sure!

Did he get any pain meds? I hope he heals quickly and feels better real soon.

Not sure if they told him but don't let him drink out of a straw for a while.

Second that! Or smoke (if he does) for at least 48 hours or more. DSS17 had all of his out a few weeks ago and ended up with dry sockets in his two bottoms. He smokes, but they didn't mention that he should just take very small and light puffs.

Should add, I hope he feels better soon, it can a very traumatic procedure.
