News reports say a security guard found the body of a female CM in her car in a CM parking lot at WDW. Investigators don't see any obvious foul play.

This brings one source to report on other deaths in the past (monorail accident, stunt performer, etc.) and the difficulty of working for the mouse. One story is of the resorts at Disneyland which have started to electonically track the progress of custodial workers, seeing how fast each is working. In the hotel laundry, there are large flat screens which show each employee, by name, and how fast they are working in relation to the other employees. Thus, each worker can see who is not carring their weight. Workers call this "the electronic whip". (per LA Times).

This "news" is at least a month old. Point?

As for the "electronic whip", any business that doesn't monitor the productivity of its employees won't be around for long. I've worked for companies that had as little as 4-5 people in a production-oriented department and they were expected to meet or exceed certain standards.

This is an absurd comparison.

Tracking productivity is one thing and to be expected -- but to put everyone's minute-by-minute productivity on display for all to see, including drop-offs in productivity due to things like bathroom breaks, smacks of creepy Big Brother-ism.

I will agree, however, that the story referenced is old news.

The electronic whip is nothign new. 18 years ago when I worked in a call center for a major retailer, our # of calls and stats were posted daily for all to see. Every so often when the numbers needed to improve, there were incentives given to those who logged the most calls. Those at the bottom were still employeed but everyone was made aware of who was not pullng their weight.

Bingo.

If you're on the clock, of course the employer has a right to know what you are doing. At most call centers mangers have displays which show the number of calls each rep has taken, how long they have been on their current call, average wait times, etc.

I've worked in office environments where my coworkers spent company time surfing the net, planning weddings, acting as general contractor on the house they were building, balancing checkbooks, taking a dozen cigarette breaks per day, etc.

If people could be trusted to perform without such monitoring, it wouldn't be necessary. But they can't...so it is.

What am I missing here? I just don't see the connection between the deceased CM and the "electronic whip"..??

During the depression my uncle monitored workers output. It was called time study or time and motion. He would stand on the line with a stop watch and record your output.
