A CRAZY first trip to BCV

I have had better trips getting to WDW and back from WDW.

This was our first trip to WDW as DVC members. We were to have a studio and a two bedroom at BCV. My wife’s parents, my parents, and my wife and I and our two kids were all going.

The day before we were to leave my wife’s great uncle died. She was real close to him and we started to cancel the trip. Due to scheduling problems at the funeral home and with the military his funeral was not going to be until the day we were supposed to return. She decided we would go ahead and come back a day early. My parents had already left and we had no way to get in touch with them.

The day we left we got a phone call while at the airport waiting to board our flight. One of my mother-in-laws sisters had died. They were driving and were almost in Florida already. Since they were driving we had sent our Halloween costumes and all the baby stuff we needed. (Diapers, bottles, formula, food, etc….) We told them to turn around. We could buy everything we needed in Orlando. They would not be going to WDW.

The flight was uneventful and Cartier was waiting to pick us up. We arrived at the BCV at the exact same time as my parents. They were getting directions at the guard house as we pulled up behind them.

I had rented a scooter for my mother from Walker Mobility. As soon as we had unloaded from the car I asked about getting the scooter. There was no scooter. The bell captain said none had been delivered that day.

Crap!

I called Walker Mobility and left a message. We headed up to our room with a wheel chair.

The room was great. I kept the 2 bedroom and just let the points go for the studio. It was way to late to cancel and get anything back. I have an October use year and would have had to use them before the end of this month.

We had a two bed room lockout. Rooms 410 and 412. It was a great location. It was the second and third room from the elevator and had a great view of the BCV pool. We never did use the balcony after the first day. We were all too afraid to unlock the door and forget to relock to the top lock. The fourth floor room balcony's have a design flaw. The bottom is solid. There is no way for a little one to see out without climbing. They provide a great mini ladder for them to climb up. Next time we are going to request any floor but the fourth. They are the only balconies with the solid railing.

Our 4 year old daughter found that one of the three sliding glass doors did not lock at the top. When we grabbed her she was up on both knees balancing on the top rail of the fourth floor. My wife was in tears and was ready to leave.

I called maintenance and told them we needed the door fixed. I pushed the couch up against the door for now.

Walker Mobility called back. The man I spoke with was the epitome of customer NO service. He told me the bell people were just wrong. His driver never makes mistakes and the scooter was there to check again. I checked again and was assured there were no scooters present. They even called over to the Yacht club and there was no scooter there. I called Walker Mobility back and was told the bad news. He had rented out every scooter he had. He did not even have one of the 20 he keeps on hand to handle broken scooters. I was just out of luck. He was more concerned with the fact his $2500 dollar scooter was gone. Not one time did he say he was sorry and would look into what had happened. He did say as a courtesy he would refund my money if it did not show up by the next day. As a courtesy???? He kept saying he had done his job and had delivered the scooter. It was not his fault and he was out $2500. I hung up disappointed and angry.

At this point everyone was down. We tried to call to get priority seating somewhere but priority seating was apparently broken everyday we were there. You either got a busy signal or were put on hold forever. We decided to use my parents car to leave the property and eat somewhere in Orlando. When we called down to have the car brought up front they told us the scooter had just been delivered.

The driver had just left and had told them he had delivered it to the wrong hotel. Walker Mobility never called back to apologize for their attitude on the phone. I will not be doing business with them again.

The trip was finally looking up. Since we had the scooter we decided to walk/roll over to the boardwalk and eat at Spoodels.

When we got back to the room the door had not been fixed. I called again. The next time I called I was going to speak with the on duty manager and ask them if it would be easier to fix the door or clean up the mess when someone fell.

No one ever came that night.

In the morning we all left to get some breakfast. When we returned the door had been fixed.

The next few days were a blur. The weather was great to ok. It only rained during the day once and we were in the Muppet movie when it happened.

My 4 year old daughter wanted to visit Blizzard Beach. She has some sing along videos where the kids go on a lot of the rides at the Magic Kingdom, Blizzard Beach, and Typhoon Lagoon. She had a blast.

It was time to go home. We were going to drive from Orlando to Savannah for the funeral. If we flew we would have had to fly home to Atlanta and then drive back to Savannah. It is actually closer from Orlando to Savannah from where our car was in Atlanta.

We rented a car from National at the Dolphin. That was real convenient.

We started driving towards Savannah and only made it to Jacksonville.

Our 10 month old son had picked up a stomach bug and was blowing chunks all over the place.

We stopped at a hotel for the night and tried to regroup. The funeral was the next day at 11:00am and we were about two and a half hours away. Plenty of time.

We woke early and left the hotel at 7:00am. He blew more chunks almost immediately. He was fine in the hotel that night. I cleaned him up and the carseat up the best I could and we started again. More chunks. At this point we just drove own. What a smell….

We met my in-laws at a K-Mart in Savannah. My wife was going to go with them to the funeral and I was going to head to Great Grandma’s house at Tybee to try and clean up our son and the car.

In the end she made it to the funeral and our son never did get sick again.

What a first trip home!

Oh my. So sorry to hear of the deaths of your loved ones. What a difficult trip you had. Hopefully the next time you "go home" you will be able to write about your "perfect trip", here is my wishful thinking for you.

First and foremost, sorry to read about the two deaths in the family.

Is the place you were getting the scooter from part of Disney? It doesn't sound like it, but I'm just curious.

I can NOT believe what happened with the door!! I really feel for you and your wife discovering your daughter in a dangerous situation - just reading about it made my heart race. But I am completely and totally appalled that they would not send someone up immediately knowing you have a concern with a young child in the room. Terrible customer service, especially after you called twice!

And, lastly, what a bummer having a sick kid through the car ride. I just feel bad for you guys all the way around.

Hopefully there were enough bright spots in the trip to not make it a completely sour memory.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your relatives and messed up arrangements at the villas.

May your next trip be perfect.

Kelley

I am so sorry about the deaths in your family and the other problems with your trip. I hope you made some great memories in spite of it all. We rented my MIL a scooter from Randy's Mobility in Orlando and they were great. If you need one again, try them.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your loved ones and all of the misfortunes you encountered on your first trip home. The story about your daughter really hit home because we have a young DS and will be making our first trip home to BCV next October. Thank you for sharing that...I will be sure to request any floor but the 4th. I am also suprised that it took so long to get the door fixed. I also feel your pain as to the car ride with a sick baby. We took the AutoTrain to Florida (WDW) in April and we had a very, very small sleeper car. Our son got sick in our little cubby hole of a room and although the train was not filled by any means we were not allowed to switch rooms. There was no ventilation in the room and we were told to pack lightly because the rooms were small. We had only pj's to wear and we all had to wear the pj's when we got off the train because in that small space DS threw up all over DH and I. Not to mention the fact that we had to sleep in that smelly room. I can sympathize with you. I really hope that your next trip makes up for this one!!

My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time of grief.

and the trips to WDW have got to get better from here.
If it makes you feel any better, the WDW Marathon and Half-Marathon are a great time of year to head to The Land of the Sacred Mouse.
We'll see you then, we live over at VWL

Hey are you related to me? This sounds like one of my trips! So sorry for your losses.

As for the door issue, There is a website That sells mini door alarms they are for patio doors. They stick on with velcro and if the child opens the door the alarm goes off. Before anyone flames me it is loud enough to hear in the unit but not loud to disturb other villa guests. Sorry I can not remember the website but I had found it by doing a search on Ask Jeeves and safety (hotel travel safety). They were very reasonable either 14.95 or 19.95. good luck, Hope your next trip is less eventful.

So sorry your 1st trip home went so poorly for you. On the bright side you need to plan another trip so you have a 2nd chance for a good trip "Home".

I'm glad to hear you had a good time anyway....and i'm sorry for the loss of your family members and the difficulties you had the whole trip.

There's just something about WDW, isn't there? My dh lost his mother just a few weeks ago....and as soon as we were able to leave St. Petersburg, where she had lived, he wanted to go to Disney. But it had helped him a lot when he lost his father last year....the week before our vacation....so I guess it was pretty logical. WDW is his happy place. And it sounds like he isn't alone in that.

So sorry -- what a trip!

Sending lots of pixie dust for your next trip home....

Wow......Sorry to here all your troubles....glad you were able to enjoy some of your trip....definatly not the part where you drove to the funeral...:(:(
