I stumbled upon these two old FW photos on another thread here on the Disboards. I tried to just quote from that post, so you could see the original post if you wanted to, but the quote function would not work on it, for some reason. So, here's a link to the thread:

And, here are the photos, in case that link doesn't work for you:

The trading post picture is quite interesting to me. I have studied it rather carefully, and I'm almost certain that it's the Settlement Trading Post. I never saw those totem poles, and the fencing and landscaping sure look different.

I would date the Settlement Trading Post picture from the 70's, TCD. Yep...those Totem Poles were there until somewhere in the late 80's IIRC. I was very sad when they took them out and replaced it with the "Chuck Wagon". Also notice the "one rail" split rail fence and no shrubbery.

Back in the Fort's beginning....Settlement was "the" trading post & Meadow (no "s") was the "little" trading post. It was about half the size it is now.

Definitely the Settlement, though I'm surprised to see the pelt hanging where the wagon wheel is now... apparently the move to political correctness started much earlier than I previously suspected. Great pics! Thanks for sharing.

I didn't notice the pelt until you pointed it out. I also meant to point out the old log-style trash cans that are in front of the trading post. I see one on the right of the photo, and I think there is another to the left, at the corner of the porch area. The only one of these that I believe is still at the Fort is at the campfire area.

A couple of things throw me off about positively identifying this as the Settlement Trading Post:

(1). When I look to the left of the photo, I would expect to see Bay Lake. At least a glimpse of it through the trees. But, I don't see the lake, and it looks like there is some kind of building or other structure through the trees.

(2). I think the current entrance to the Settlement Trading Post is more in the center of the building. The entrance in the photo looks like it is off-center. Of course, this photo is 30+ years old, so that discrepancy can be explained by subsequent remodels.

We would walk around the fort when we stayed in the contemporary back in the 70's

1) After some careful scrutiny in Photoshop I am pretty sure the light color you see through the trees is Bay Lake. Note also that it is not a dense stand of trees but just a few as you can see the sky through the pine boughs. Also, if this were the Meadow/s there would be train tracks in the foreground rather than a path.

2) I also did some playing around with GoogleEarth to match their 3D model to this picture. I got a pretty close match, even the location of the phones matches. The entrance is actually where the man in the yellow shirt is coming out. The porch is pretty deep and from this angle the door (which is centered under the sign, but on the opposite side of the porch) is well to the right of the sign.

Oh, and thanks re: the PM.

No...it's definitely Settlement Trading Post. I have slides almost exactly the same picture as the one posted.

Yes, Shanta...if you look thru the pine trees to the left of the building, you can see Bay Lake.

If I didnt know better..Id think that the kid in the center is Drew Barrymore!!

You do know that we are going to print these out and plaster them all over FW. I was thinking that we would put them in the frames at the Meadows and Settlement trading posts. The ones that have the Wanted pictures in them. We could even put them in the frames at every comfort station. Right next to BDR's Wanted photos

With all this talk about identifying which outpost this is using satellite imagery and everything didn't anyone notice anything shocking about the first photo.

Remember a time when you could pet a deer and not worry about Lime disease:scared1::scared1::).

Those were the days.
