Okay...I'm cheap. Well, maybe more like frugal. It's my Scottish background coming out. BUT...my ds flew up from Tampa last month to visit. He went to his grandmother's (ex's mom) and she gave ds and his wife a bunch of stuff since she's looking at moving soon. And since my idiot ds is too lazy to bring the stuff back with him, he asks me to pack it up and ship it to him. Yeah, right...that's gonna happen.
So....they're driving over for a visit when we're at WDW next month. Sooooo, I figured that rather than ship the stuff, I would bring it with me. At least I know what I'm doing whereas he didn't. I have no problem with any of the stuff except one thing....a picture. I'm taking the print out of the frame and rolling it, with several smaller ones inside the bigger one..or outside it, we'll see how it works. BUT, that bigger print is sizable. I think it will only fit in a 36" long mailing tube. But, will I be able to bring that on as carryon?? It should be able to just slide in the back of the overhead, but I don't want to get stuck with having to check it..that just wouldn't make any sense to me.
I had originally thought I would just put the tube in my larger checked bag, but it won't fit, it's too long.

So...anyone ever taken a longer mailing tube on the plane with them????

We just flew out of Logan on Delta and they seemed way more concerned about suitcases then anything else. I saw them stop one guy, who was trying to get on with 3 carry-ons. I said to my husband, is that guy serious? They weren't even small. They actually made us put our carry-ons in the measuring thing that they have, I've never been asked to do that before. I bet you could get on with it, I don't think the gate agents would notice. But that's just my humble opinion. ;)

Oh come on people...surely someone has had to bring a longer tube with them as carryon before!!!:confused3

Thirty-six by what? Remember, the sample dimensions are the sample. If the maximum carry-on size is 42 linear inches, your tube could have a diameter of three inches and still qualify. As always, common wisdom would suggest bringing a printout of the airline's linear inches requirements... and a tape measure would help, too ;)

Yes. We brought back a signed poster from SWW three weeks ago. DS carried it on and put it in the overhead. He also had his school-sized backpack, and it was no problem.

It's very common to see people bring cardboard storage tubes on board aircraft. Business travelers who are involved with architecture and design carry blueprints in them all the time.

Carry-on's don't just have a maximum dimension, they also have maximum dimensions for each side.

I think the best option would be put all the prints in one tube and ship it insured.

Some carriers limit carry bags by linear dimensions. Others have a limit for each side. The bag must fit in the sizing template. Your tube won't fit in the sizing template. I agree with the PP, I doubt you'll have a problem.

The question is what will you do if you're told NO? Throw out the tube? Have an address label ready and mail it? Beg?

The limits are intended to ensure carry on bags can go in the bin wheels in (or wheels out).Your tube should fit on top of bags in the bin.

Diane--You can get many opinions but you should first check the carryon rules. If your tube is legal print the rules. If it's not legal the experience of others may not help you if an aggressive GA tells you NO.

36x3 inches pretty much. I may have to just mail it down to ds. This is a huge pain in my posterior region. I have seen many business people carrying them onboard..but as mentioned, what am I going to do if told no.
Think I'll just mail it to him...then get reimbursed when I see him....:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

+1 to this

People do travel with things like this. As much as I am a "rule-follower" and I hate that people bring suitcases that are too big or right on the border of size, there are exceptions, and this is one of them. Guitars are another I have seen.

I say, bring it, be sweet to the GA and FA, and either tuck in the overhead bin on top of the other's bags lengthwise, or maybe even the FA will let you store it in the front closet.

Mailing a poster tube via USPS insured for $100 would be around $15.00.

Okay, I thought I’d go right to the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

First I called Delta. They were too busy to talk to me  and I should call back later!

Then I thought longer, and realized that the OP is taking Direct Air, so I called them. Guess what? THEY were too busy to talk to me, too !

I got smart. I called the best airline in the country – JetBlue. Granted, I had to hold for three or four minutes, but then I SPOKE with a representative. I described the container, and she said yes, JetBlue would accept it as a carry-on. Now, granted, the OP chose her airline for convenience and price, not service :umbrella: but….

Well... when I worked up in Anchorage, Alaska...we would see fishing pole tubes of +6 feet coming through the checkpoint x-ray machine. Soooo... ymmv on something like a poster tube. However...a 36 inch long tube is VERY likely to fit an overhead, and MOST likely will not have a problem in the overhead.

Such different opinions on JB, which I have experienced to be the LEAST service-oriented airline that I've used.... In fact it's the service that soured us entirely on them (the broken TV screen in front of me didn't help)!

OP, just mail the tube. It won't be much at all.

I fly in/out of Alaska all the time and also see lots of fishing gear as described.

I would bring the tube and carry it on, personally.
It's not going to be listed in the carryon rules because it is a weird size/shape. They can't possibly list every exception.

Silly girl....can you not keep up with my travel plans???? I'm flying DirectAir next April, JB in Dec as well as the return flight in August!!! I'm flying down on SW!!!

This whole thing is a pain. I'm already going to be checking a larger checked bag with some artwork in it...can't be removed from the frames and rolled! As well as a door decoration. The bone china cups/saucers will be in my carryon. I'll have to give some addtl thought to the tube. Stupid son.

Harumph! It would be GREATLY appreciated if you would put the appropriate airline code (except you may use JB, SW, and DI for those airlines instead of their respective oh-so-confusing correct ones ;)) in your countdowns! :rotfl:
