A Canadian Family’s First Disney Cruise!

Dream Day 3

I was enjoying my sleep as I recall....only to be rudely awaken by a very annoying beeping sound at around 7:00. I couldn't figure out what it was and DH was walking around in the dark room looking for the source of the sound. It turns out that the wave phone was emitting its low battery beep!!!!!!!

After DH got the sound to turn off (obviously by putting it back into the wave phone charger), he had the luxury of just rolling over and falling back to sleep, but I was wide awake! I just laid there in bed, in the dark, planning out my day. The family finally decided to roll out of bed around 8:00. We weren't in any hurry to get off the ship today because we had just spent a great day on the beach at Blue Lagoon. I even entertained the thought of hanging on the ship in the morning, maybe even getting a ride on the Aquaduck before heading out to Castaway Cay.

We went to Cabanas for breakfast and ended up sitting in Mario's section! We were happy to see him and he greeted the girls with more origami flowers (impromptu flowers made from white paper napkins). It was very sweet of him. He asked us what we had planned and he shared his thoughts on Castaway Cay too.

After talking to Mario and seeing the beautiful beach from the ship, we couldn't wait to get off the Dream and find the perfect spot to hang out for a few hours. We went to the cabin to grab our beach bag and headed off.

We ran into Daisy at the post office and decided to stop and line up for a photo op:

P1010763.jpg

We decided to wait for the tram to take us to the family beach.
Photos I took while waiting for the tram:

P1010767.jpg

I saw Jack, but the girls were actually afraid of him and had no desire to take a photo with him! :lmao:

P1010769.jpg

Finally the tram arrived and we went for a ride:

P1010771.jpg

Most of the people on the tram got off at the first stop, but I had read on the Disboards to wait until the next stop where it would be quieter. So we continued on and at the second stop of the Family beach, we got off the tram and headed to the beach. We passed by the rental shack for the floats/tubes and snorkel gear on our way to the beach. We found a great set of chairs and umbrella right next to a lifegaurd tower and set oursevles for the day.

This was our view:

DSCF7429.jpg

I brought a snorkel and mask (I don't own fins) from home to use. There are the blow up life vests you can use for free and must use actually. I saw the lifegaurd remind a few people that they had to wear a life vest while snorkelling. They were hanging on the life gaurd tower or you can get one at the rental shop. I tried to snorkel, but without fins, I wasn't going anywhere, so I gave up! I imagine it would have been cool if I made it all the way out to the snorkeling lagoon. It's actually quite far out!

DH went to rent a mat and tube for us to use. It was only $6 each for the day (compared to the $20 I had to pay on RCCL!). We spent the morning enjoying the beautiful crystal clear water. It was a little rocky though close to the shore line, but once you were out, it was fine.

DSCF7433.jpg

DSCF7444.jpg

DH liked to float with the clear tube and look for fish...we found one swimming around our feet:

DSCF7473.jpg

DSCF7468.jpg

After a morning full of swimming, it was time for lunch! We decided that we had had enough of the ocean, the sand and the sun. We were done with the beach so we gave our floats to a mom and daughter nearby to enjoy for the rest of the day then went went to Cookies BBQ for lunch.

P1010778.jpg

I picked up a bag of potato chips, some cole slaw, hamburger, fruit and of course a cookie! We sat in the covered picnic table area to enjoy our lunch.

After lunch we went over to the ice cream stand and had a cool treat.

Dream day 3 continued

After lunch we decided to explore the island a bit. The girls wanted to check out Scuttles Cove so headed in that direction. Here are some photos on the way:

P1010782.jpg

P1010783.jpg

P1010784.jpg

And of course some photos by Rustmore:

P1010786.jpg

P1010790.jpg

We arrived at Scuttles Cove and checked the girls in. DH and I didn't know what to do with our time. It was HOT. And I know he was uncomfortable. He wasn't in the mood to sit by the beach, and definitely not in the mood to walk around anymore. We did make it down to Boat beach so that I could snap some photos

P1010792.jpg

P1010794.jpg

I was really missing my girls and wondering what they were doing in the Cove so rather than walk around aimlessly, I told DH we could go back in and check in on the girls. Perhaps we could just head back to the ship and enjoy some time on the Aquaduck and freshwater pool. I think he was relieved at the thought!

We went in to find them doing this:

P1010795.jpg

There wasn't much action going on and they were just playing with the sand toys so we told them our plan and they were happy to leave. We checked them out and went to the tram to wait for a ride back. It was a long wait.......we could have walked it, but it was too hot. At least we were able to wait in a little bit of shade. Most of the people waiting were standing the sun, and it couldn't have been fun!

Once the tram arrived we all breathed a huge sigh of relief and were looking forward to getting back on board. I took some final photos before leaving

P1010797.jpg

P1010799.jpg

P1010800.jpg

As we approached the ship, I was eyeing the Aquaduck and noticed that it was not running. I was concerned that we wouldn't have our chance on it. I knew the best time to try it would be right now with most people on the island. It was probably around 1:30 by this time.

Up next: Day 3 continued...to ride or not to ride....

Beautiful pic of the girls and your DH!!! Your little one is a total ham, isn't she! The pic of your big girl on the float is total happiness!
More! More!:goodvibes

Thanks, I really like the photo of the three of them too! Having the Dream in the background makes it even more perfect! DD7 is quite the ham, and she sure knows how to put on a show in front of a camera. It sure is better than having her run away every time I whip out the camera though! :lmao:

Thanks for following along!

Dream day 3 continued:

We went straight up to deck 11 to see if the Aquaduck was up and running. DH wanted to bring the beach bag back to the cabin first so the girls and I hung out in the Mickey pool until he came up himself. It was nice and quiet up here since most passengers were still on Castaway Cay.

DD7 had no desire to ride the Aquaduck. She is not as adventurous as DD9. So DH and DD7 hung out together in the Mickey pool while I took DD9 to ride the duck. We walked up to deck 12 to climb the steps to the Aquaduck.

You can see the stairs that lead up to the start of the Aquaduck inside the funnel:

P1010149.jpg

The deck and stairs are super hot under the hot sun. So we kept our sandals and flip flops on. The ride was up and running and we had a 5 minute wait. My DD9 kept her sandals on because they had straps to secure them, but I took my flip flops off and sat on them. The ride was awesome!!! We had so much fun and we were able to wave to DH and DD7 who were playing below us in the Mickey Pool. DD9 loved it and wanted to ride again, so as soon as we got off, we walked rather briskly back up the stairs to line up again. We did this 4 times. The last time we waited at least 20 minutes because of some delay where they had to shut down the ride. That was painful (the wait that is!). However, we had a blast. It was worth the wait. I don't know if I would ever wait 30-40 minutes for it though!

We were done riding the Aquaduck, and I think DD7 and DH had enough of the pool, so we went back to the cabin to shower and get ready for dinner. When we got to the cabin, we saw that Paul had put out our pirate gear for the night!

P1010802.jpg

P1010803.jpg

While waiting for DH to shower, I started flipping through the rebooking brochure. I looked through it longingly and thought how nice it would be to come back and bring the two sets of grandparents with us. We cruised with my parents, and DH's mom and sister last year and it was fantastic. We all get along, and the girls adore their grandparents. The girls were having such a great time and wanted to sail the Dream again with their grandparents. DH was surprisingly in agreement, especially since I told him about the rebooking incentives (reduced deposits, OBC, cruise discount). So he said, let's book it!:cool1:

We went straight to the rebooking center and thankfully there was no wait. So we sat down and booked 3 adjoining cabins with verandahs:cool1: for July 2012. I couldn't believe we were doing it!!! Even though we are doing the exact same cruise on the same ship, it will be different because we have the grandparents and we will have balconies! I know my dad is really looking forward to sitting on his verandah, enjoying room service and the free wine he plans on bringing with him onto the ship! :lmao:

After we made our bookings, we continued our Detective Agency game. This time DD7 felt confident enough to play after watching DD9 play for the last two days.

P1010806.jpg

The game is a great way to get you to explore the ship!

P1010810.jpg

We took some photos by Admiral Donald:

P1010816.jpg

P1010820.jpg

By now, it was time for all the Disney friends to come out for photos. So we went back to the cabin to get our pirate bandanas and autograph books and headed back out to find some pirate Disney friends.

P1010844.jpg

P1010849.jpg

I wonder what Captain Hook was trying to say to her:

P1010852.jpg

The girls were't too sure about Captain Hook, but I didn't give them a choice and said they had to get their photos done with him since we never saw him at WDW! :lmao:

It was time for dinner now, so headed to Animators Palate for Pirate Night!

P1010216.jpg

Do DCL provide all guest with bandanas for pirate night or do you purchase them? if so what is the cost and when/where do you purchase them?

Do DCL provide all guest with bandanas for pirate night or do you purchase them? if so what is the cost and when/where do you purchase them?

Your cabin steward will provide all the guests in each cabin a DCL bandana on pirate night. :thumbsup2. So be sure to go to your cabin to find them, before dinner. I imagine he/she puts them out right after they make your room for the day.

Some people go all out and dress up in amazing pirate wear! I believe you can buy further accessories in the gift shops on board, but my girls were happy enough with their bandanas!

Dream day 3

Dinner tonight was at Animator's Palate. I had heard so much about this restaurant and how Crush would come by to interact with all the diners. I was really looking forward to it.

We were lead to a great table for 4 right in front of one of the large screens. Perfect for viewing all the great animation and for seeing Crush!

P1010855.jpg

P1010857.jpg

But alas, since this was pirate night, we would not get to see all the cool effects with Crush and his friends swimming by on the big screen.

Here is the menu for tonight:

P1010864.jpg

P1010865.jpg

P1010866.jpg

DH ordered the pot stickers

P1010861.jpg

And here is what is left of my crab cakes!!! I was so bad this night, forgeting to take photos of my apps!

P1010862.jpg

DH ordered the Buccaneer's Sun Ripened pineapple:

P1010863.jpg

I ordered the carribean style conch chowder:

P1010867.jpg

For my main, I had the Treasure of the seas grilled shrimp and seared scallops on fettucini.

P1010870.jpg

I think the girls orderd some fried cheese sticks with green beans and fries.

When dinner was over, we got the dessert menu

P1010875.jpg

I ordered the sweet temptations, again.

P1010876.jpg

Even though Mario was kept super busy with his second table of 12 next to us, he did his best to keep up with our service and spend time with the girls. He had promised to show them a magic trick the previous night, and the girls did not let him forget. So he took 5 minutes out of his hectic pace and showed the girls a cool trick, using DD7 as his assistant. I unfortunately do hot have any photos of this trick. But the girls were so happy and he promised to do it again the next time we saw him.

The girls had wanted to go to the Oceaneer Lab tonight for "Anyone Can Cook" activity scheduled for 7:00. But dinner service took a lot longer than usual for some reason and we were not done dinner until 7:30 or so. So we decided to go and find some Disney friends to take photos with and get some more autographs!

We went back to the cabin to grab our books and found this:

P1010878.jpg

Paul had also put out all the tip envelops and the suggested tip guide, and of course some fun chocolate gold coins.

After we got our things we went to find Ariel:

P1010893.jpg

P1010894.jpg

Tonight's show in the theater was Ricky Kalmon's family hypnosis show. He has an adult version which I would have loved to see, but I had to miss it since we had the girls. But the family show was fabulous!

We got to the theater early and grabbed the box seats on the second floor closest to the stage.

P1010896.jpg

P1010897.jpg

P1010898.jpg

Let's just say, this was the BEST show! The girls definitely enjoyed this show more than the musical productions. It was just so hilarious. They loved it. Ricky got the audience partipants on stage to pretend they were Hannah Montana, Rafiki holding up Simba as he presented the new lion king, paper napkins were actually $100 bills and they had to keep them in safe spots....plus so much more. It was just too fun. I wonder how often Ricky Kalmon performs for Disney. I hope he is there next summer again!

Dream day 3

When the show was over, we went to line up for Stitch (we never met him at WDW) and also for Chip and Dale...all in their pirate finery.

P1010902.jpg

P1010907.jpg

The girls wanted to check out Pluto's PJ Party in the Club at 10:00, But they also wanted to see the fireworks show that was supposed to happen at 10:30! The timing was just horrible. I read about how kids got to color a pillow case at the party and thought the girls would enjoy that. But how can anyone miss the best, and only, fireworks show at sea??????? So I said we can drop the girls off at the club for 30 minutes of the party, and then pick them up in time to go up on deck to watch the fireworks. We would miss the pirate show, and they were fine with that since they aren't into pirates at all!

While the girls were at the club, DH and I went up on deck to see what the pirate party was all about and to grab a cup of coffee.

P1010911.jpg

I wasn't really feeling the party, and I couldn't stop thinking about my girls and wondering if they were even having a good time in the lab/club since I kind of got the feeling that they weren't enjoying it as much as I thought they would. So we went back down to the club to find them after only 20 minutes. I found them sitting down in the club just as the pj "party" was about to get started. There weren't that many kids at the party yet, and of the kids there, they were all really young! So the girls were happy to leave before any of the real fun even began because they wanted to see the fireworks at sea anyways.

We missed the whole pirate show, and went straight to deck 13 by the Currents Bar to find a place to view the fireworks.

P1010914.jpg

If you get here early enough you can probably find comfy seating to enjoy the show from. But since we were there pretty late, we had standing room only....but we were in a fantastic viewing area. The fireworks are shot out on the starboard side (right) toward the bow (front).

Here are some fireworks photos:

The fireworks were pretty awesome and a definite must do on the Dream!

We decided to call it a night after the fireworks and headed back to our cabins. The girls were looking forward to snuggling up in their bed and watching more on demand movies anyways.

Up next: Our final day at sea.

Dream Day 4 A Day at Sea!

We all decidedto take it easy today and sleep as long as we could. It was our day at sea! I did wake up earlier than the girls and they finally woke at around 9:00. We headed to our usual breakfast at Cabanas. Here are the girls right outside Cabanas:

P1010958.jpg

The girls originally wanted to check out the Family Fun Crafts in the District Lounge at 10:00 but we were still eating at 10! So they decided that the next thing they wanted to do was to go up to the Sports Deck and play mini putt and see Goofy at 11:00. Since we were still early, we walked around the ship to take some photos and went into the shops to look at all the cool merchandise and do some pin trading.

I love these porthole photos!

P1010961.jpg

In one of the shops:

P1010963.jpg

By now it was time to head up to the Sports Deck to play mini putt and find Goofy.

P1010967.jpg

P1010971.jpg

We found Goofy playing a round himself!

P1010969.jpg

There were quite a few people up here waiting to see Goofy too, so we had a short wait. It was finally time for a hug and a pose!

P1010980.jpg

P1010978.jpg

DH decided that he would go to Guest Services now to put our gratuities on our KTTW cards instead of using cash in the envelopes. When you do this, you fill out a form with the amount you want to give to each person, and GS will bill your card and print out a ticket with the amount for each person so you can put that into the envelope. While he did this, I took the girls to the Lab to check things out.

I decided to go into the lab with them to watch how things went in there. They didn't seem interested in going in alone and preferred that I hung out with them in there too. They tried to do activities in there, but they lost interest in them very quickly. I saw a Make Your Own Wand activity that was supposed to start in the club (Pixie Hollow). That was a complete bust! The club was so busy, and they chose to bring the kids into a small tight corner within Pixie Hollow to sit on the floor to make their wands. Because there were so many kids, there wasn't enough room really for them to squeeze into that tight corner and the kids were all over the place. Not really condusive to getting access to the materials to make the wands. The CM handed out popsicle sticks to use as the wand base I guess, and the rest of the materials didn't seem all that appealing to my DDs. So we decided to leave that activity.

Next up was the Marshmallow Olympics. That kind of looked interesting, and the kids had to work in groups. My girls are on the shy side, so getting them to interact and work with complete strangers was beyond their comfort level. They had to create a Marshmallow figure using marshmallows and toothpicks. Both DDs were not enjoying this either, so they left!! Are you seeing a pattern here???????

DH had returned by now and DD9 decided that the lab was just not any fun, so they left to do the Detective Agency game. I took DD7 to a make you own bracelet craft in the lab. There was one CM, and about 8 or 9 kids sitting at the table. One by one, the girls had to tell the CM what colour plastic craft lacing (aka "gimp") they wanted. This took forever. And then finally they brought out these plastic letter beads, and one by one, the girls had to tell the CM what letters they wanted. Needless to say, DD7 lost interest in this quickly and didn't want to wait!

So by now, even DD7 had enough of the lab and we decided to leave. It was very crowded in there, and the noise level was high. It was just not a relaxing place to be in. But I think some kids thrive in places like these, and are not bothered at all by the chaos that I perceive it to be. I give a lot of credit to the CMs who are working there all day though. It can't be easy. And all the kids in there looked like they were having a blast. But it really isn't for everyone. I thought for sure my girls would love it in there, but they didn't. And that's OK! I am glad that they tried it though, and I certaintly didn't have any problems hanging out in there either!:goodvibes

We were able to get caught up with DD9 and DH. It was closing in on the Princess gathering time at 1:15. We had missed all earlier Princess gatherings, so this was our last opportunity to see them. My DH graciously offered to go stand in line for us at around 12:35. Almost 45 minutes before they were scheduled to come out. And he was NOT the first in line, but maybe the 8th person or so?

I ran around the ship with the girls to do the agency game again. At around 1:00 I brought the girls down to stand in line with DH. The lineup snaked on forever!!!! I am so glad DH was willing to stand in line for his little princesses! The line up went past the entrance to the Royal Palace for those familiar with the Dream's deck plans.

Right on time, all six princesses made their appearance at the deck above us

P1010989.jpg

P1010990.jpg

And they made the way down the grand staircase into the Atrium

P1010991.jpg

Here are more photos of the girls with the Princesses. At this last one, there are no photopass photographers, so I think that helps the line move a little faster. Even so, I think they had to cut the line off within minutes of it starting because the line was so long!

P1020007.jpg

P1020015.jpg

P1020030.jpg

DD7 gave the picture she drew for Ariel during this meeting. She was so pleased to get it and thought it was very sweet of DD7.

P1020035.jpg

P1020037.jpg

P1020046.jpg

We got though the princess line within 10 minutes max. And by now, Remy was supposed to visit at 1:30 right next to where we were standing in the Atrium as well. There was already a short line for Remy. The girls were so excited to see Remy for their very first time. We never saw him in our two previous trips to the World! I thought he was the cutest character all week!!!!

I love how he got the girls to pose like mice with him!

P1020062.jpg

Up next: Time for lunch!!!!

Love all the character photos! On our trip, we'll have my niece, who will be 6 and is a huge princess fan, so I definitely plan to take her to some of the greetings. Do you remember how early you got to each one? I want to not get cut off from getting to see them, but obviously don't want to spend too much extra time standing in line.

Looking forward to your next installment!

All caught up! I am loving your trippie! We haven't cruised yet....hoping to Dream in July - although I might have to move that ressie...we'll see...

But I am loving your report! I already know what I'm going to eat when I finally get to go!

Thanks! We spent a lot of time chasing down the characters! I wasn't bothered by the lines as I have nothing to compare it to. It seemed typical to me compared to what I had to wait when I was at WDW. Most lines averaged 10-15 minutes. The Princess gathering was the worst though. But they have multiple Princess gatherings and I would imagine some are worse than others. We went to the very last one on the Sea Day, and DH lined up 45 minutes BEFORE they arrived at the atrium. Once they came out, we waited under maybe 5 minutes before it was finally our turn.

But I am loving your report! I already know what I'm going to eat when I finally get to go!

Glad you're enjoying the report! I also made a mental note about what I wanted to order by reading other people's trip reports! I have two more meals to report on, so please stick around!

Love the TR! It has me so excited for my cruise in Feb :)

I really have enjyed reading your TR. You have a beautiful family! I appreciate your comments and attention to detail, along wth the photos. It gave me a good sense of your experiences.

I am glad you mentioned your DD personalities! My DD will be 7 at time of sailing, and she is very shy, and often gets "trampled" over at birthday parties, etc. She is definately not one to speak up or find her place in an activity,
I had planned on going to check out the kids club with both of my kids and maybe just hang out in the backround so she is comfortable.

I am now also considering doing the Blue Lagoon Beach day. I am still uncertain because I dont like having to wait for transportation back to the ship, especially if one of my children is having a meltdown, or if its just too hot, we'll see.
so glad you had a great trip!

Thank you very much for reading and commenting. My DH and I felt that the point of the cruise was to spend time as a family, and not to drop them off at the Lab so that we could do our own thing. He refused to book a meal at Palo's because he wanted to have dinner with the girls every night! :lmao: I enjoyed hanging out with them in the Lab! I was always welcomed to stay and it wasn't an issue to have me in there with the girls. They felt more comfortable just knowing I was in there with them. I would hang out in the background just watching and I helped guide them to the different activities.

My family loved the Blue Lagoon beach day. It was a pain to wait for the boat back to the port, but we survived it! As long as they are on time it shouldn't be a problem. The lagoon is a great place for kids to swim/play in.

Enjoy your cruise!! Happy planning!

Joining in and loving it! I am stil lcatching up, but I am to the part where you just arrived at your cabin.
I have to ask, was it easy to keep the adjoining door open. Did it sway with the movement or do you need to bring a doorstop? I sailed the Dream on March 31 and though our room was adjoining, we didn't use it as we were all in 1 room.
We are going to sail her again in Nov. of 2012 and my DH won't be coming along so I have an adjoining room with my parents. I like to get up early and go up top to take pictures and we plann to leave the doors open so DD can just go to my parents room if she wakes when I am gone (she will be 7 then). But I don't want the door slamming around all night either.
I am going back to read more. Your DD's are so cute...and it looks like they like pink. My DD loves to wear a lot of pink too.

Hi! Thanks for reading along! I am glad you're enjoying my trip report. I had the pleasure of reading yours. Your DD had the most awesome outfits! My girls still do love pink....I am on the hunt for some Disney fabric so that my mom can make more custom outfits for the girls for our next cruise. They don't sell them in Toronto anymore! I used to be able to find them at Walmart, but they have stopped selling fabric. I need to find a store close to the border (Buffalo) to find some!

We had no problem with our connecting doors. I had envisioned keeping the doors wide open all the time, but we couldn't because it would block the television! We we were able to just close them 3/4 of the way, even all night long. We had very calm seas all cruise in July though. Perhaps in rough seas I can see the doors swaying about, or swinging open and then slamming shut, but they didn't move a single inch all cruise! If you are concerned, then perhaps a small wooden door stop packed into your suitcase might be helpful if you find yourselves cruising in rough waters.

Dream day 4
It was now around 2:00 and we still hadn't eaten lunch yet, so we decided to go up to Cabanas for a quick bite. I had really hoped to eat in the dining room for lunch, but with the character meets, we missed it! Hopefully we will be able to experience one lunch in the dining room on our next cruise.

I started off with my usual peel and eat shrimp!

I found the sushi counter and grabbed a couple of plates of the sushi rolls:

My DD7 LOVES California rolls. She was with DH who helped her pick out her lunch and they saw the plates of the 3 different types of sushi. DH asked the CM working the sushi counter if he could just have a plate of the California type roll, so he made a special plate for her with just that type. Otherwise they put out plates with all three different types, and you just grab a plate.

I decided to re-live my childhood and have a Coke float! I had read on the Disboards about how people have recommended making Coke floats on board since they serve the great hard ice cream! So, I indulged in one! Sorry, no photos.

It was closing in on 3:00 and the first showing of Disney's Believe was about to start. There were 3 showings today, an extra matinee in addition to the early and late show in the evening. We didn't have any other plans and thought the best time to see this show would be in the afternoon so we could spend the evening packing up and relaxing. So we walked down to the theater after we were done and grabbed front row seats on the balcony/mezzanine level. I decided to take non flash photos of this show and used the view finder instead of the LCD screen of my DSLR to minimize any disturbance to the people behind me.

We all enjoyed this show. The story line was cute, and we loved seeing all the different Disney movies put together. Tinkerbell opened the show, and DD7 was convinced that she really was there. Ah...the innocence of childhood and the magic of believing. Isn't that why we take our kids to Disney?? :goodvibes

The theater was cold and we were feeling chilled so we decided to head up to the Promenade deck to relax and warm up!

We took photos of the girls and DH hanging out!

I love the Promenade deck...it's always so quiet and peaceful here.

After we warmed right up, we decided to head to Shutters to purchase our photos now before it got any crazier in here. It was still pretty packed but we were able to find a spot to spread our photos out on and pick some prints. They are certainly pricey, and it doesn't take much before you spend $80 or more! We bought a few 8X10 at $19.99 each and a 5X7 print for $9.99. We took our photos up to the cabin to start packing and the girls relaxed in bed to watch another on demand movie.

I am so excited to do the 4 nighter. I am loving your sea day. I like that we can do a bunch of different things that we couldn't do on the 3 nighter.
