Please forgive me for hopping over to your community board but I was hoping for some help please.

DH is flying to Montreal tomorrow for a meeting (you know the type - all you usually see is the airport, taxi and hotel!) He is travelling over a day early so that he'll have some time to have a bit of a look round :goodvibes

Where would you recommend he goes? - I'm assuming his hotel is fairly central
Also any recommendation of somewhere to buy the kids a small gift (and anything especially Canadian he could get them - they are 2 and 5.)

Many thanks guys

I would recommend Old Montreal, it was in walking distance from our downtown hotel. Also alot of shopping is on St. Catherine's street, he will be able to pick up a couple of things there for you and your dd's.

While I concur that Old Montreal is fun, it might not have the same appeal to someone from Europe, used to old buildings and such. But if it does interest him, it is a nice place to hang out: there is Basilic Notre-Dame to visit, place Jacques-Cartier which is usually bustling with activity and amusement, and lots of streets & tourist shops (overpriced!) to explore. I also recommend St-Catherine for shopping, between Peel and St-Laurent (McGill subway station is a good starting point). He should also explore the "underground" Montreal, a string of tunnels and shops that runs under the streets of downtown, and joins buildings and subway stations. It is really impressive and useful in the freezing winter, I know they even have guided tours of that. And it's safe, the only thing is he might get lost :)! Just teasing, not really possible I think! I know a lots of way to walk around in there and get to faraway places without going outside.

A nice souvenir he could bring back for the family is maple syrup, the best syrup for waffles and pancakes in my opinion! The little glass bottles look nice, but are not a good value, plain cans can be found much cheaper in grocery stores if there is one close to his hotel. For the girls, I'm not sure what would be a "Canadian" souvenir thought, but he'll probably find lots of thing you don't have at home here.

Thanks Guys  I'm going to print this thread out for him.

He loves Maple Syrup and DD does too (on Mickey Mouse waffles!)

There is a Roots store on the corner of St. Catherine and Peel St. It is right downtown and has the popular beaver motif clothing. They have kids sweat shirts and t-shirts, as well as baby sizes. It is a really popular item for most tourists to Canada.

The Bell Centre where the Montreal Canadians Hockey Team plays is right downtown too. They sell hockey stuff at the gift store there. That is a very Montreal item to take home.

Hope he has a great trip.

All great suggestions above. Old Montreal should indeed be a great place to visit as well as a good place to pick up a souvenir for the little ones. If he sees a grocery store, that would likely be the best place to get Maple Syrup really.

i may be steretyping here, but if he likes a GOOD pint and would like to stay away from the megabrewed swill, there are also tons of great brewpubs. That is pubs that brew their own beer on premises. There's "L'Amere a Boire" on St-denis, Brutopia on Crescent Street, The Sergent Recruteur on St-Laurent, Dieu du Ciel on Laurier and Le Reservoir on Duluth St.

If he actually isn't into beer, then I apologize for making any stereopyted assumptions on him being British ;) :D ...

:rotfl: He's not actually a beer drinker but thanks for the tip anyway :rotfl: I could see him going out for a drink with colleagues but as he's there on his own he probably won't :rotfl:

I just wanted to thank you all for your help. DH had a pleasant wander round Old Montreal, the Main shopping centre and the 'underground bit!'

Maple syrup was purchased as well as Mammoth Crocs (in the sale  ), a jumper for DS and the (yet to be released here) new Barbie Movie for DD so he did good!

Hopefully one day I might get to visit Canada with him :cloud9:

Crocs on sale?! I thought it never happened... some sort of guideline from the manufacturer.

Glad your DH had a good time :)
