I'm not really a writer, but I have been reading these boards for months and have really appreciated all that others have shared.

Overall we had a great time. Absolutely beautiful weather in Mexico - sunny skies and warm, 75 degrees or more. (LA was cold when we left and we had rain and cold winds our last night returning to LA). It was so lovely getting a break from the dark skies, rain, and cold that have filled our winter months! We live in the Pacific Northwest. Traveled with my DH and 2 of my kids - both teens. (Our kids LOVED the cruise BTW). This was our 2nd cruise - we went on a DCL 3 day Bahama cruise last year.

The ship was sold out, no possibility of port upgrades.

Dining room food - good. Some was very good, some just good. Servers were great. Enjoyed all of the dining rooms and menus. Our kids are adventurous eaters and also enjoyed.

On our second sea day we sailed close enough to the shore to sea the Arches at Cabo, right around this area we also saw many, many dolphins swimming and jumping in the water. There might have been 50. Very cool. (When we sailed out of Cabo after our second day, we saw 4 whales from the ship).

Puerto Vallarta. Toured on our own. Took the public blue bus downtown, to "el centro." We had one dollar bills and it cost the 4 of us $2. We had a great time riding the bus as it sped through the streets. We did our best to speak Spanish and asked some locals where to get off and where to pick up the bus to go back to the port. (Taking the bus back we looked for one that said "Walmart" on the front). We walked around for an hour or so, then headed to Los Muertos Beach. We ate lunch at La Palapa Restaurant, great ceviche. Used a credit card to pay. La Palapa is right on the beach. The kids swam. I found the water a bit too cold, but they said it warmed up quickly. Vendors came by frequently, but we just said no gracias.

Cabo. Toured on our own. Took a cab to El Modena beach $1 per person. Another beautiful, sunny, warm day. Kids swam again, they preferred the beach at PV as there were more waves there. Rented a beach umbrella for $5 - negotiated the price. Stayed several hours on the beautiful beach, then walked back to the Port, it was about a 10 or 12 minute walk.

Our second day in Cabo we stayed on the boat. We had a lovely view of the Arches and enjoyed relaxing in the sun with the beautiful views all around us.

My kids definitely enjoyed seeing the movies on board, more than the shows. (We had already seen the Golden Mickeys and Dreams on our 3 day). Toy Story was new to us. It was good, but I would rate it behind the other two. We watched all of the shows together as a family before heading to dinner each night. As for movies, we saw Tron, Gnomeo and Juliet, I am Number Four, and Tangled - we liked them all. We brought candy/movie treats from home, you can buy treats outside of the theater but they are expensive and limited supply.

The gym was nice, my dh and I made good use of it.

Our flight left LAX at 12:15 pm. We were supposed to be in the first group to disembark. We were waiting in the Theater, watching cartoons, waiting to be called. The boat was late. I think we were given the ok to disembark around 8:45 or 9 am. When we followed the cast members out of the theater, we found that many other people who had just been sitting in the lobby, were ahead of us to disembark. That was a little frustrating as we were told earlier that we would be in the first group. No matter. We got through customs quickly, went out to the curb and caught a cab. $57 + tip to get to LAX. We were through security and at our gate by 10am.

Well, that was more than I thought I would write. Hope someone finds it useful.

Will we cruise again? Yes.

Would we cruise Mexico again? Yes. It was lovely. The ports were great. The weather was perfect.

Did we miss Castaway Cay? Yes, but not as much as we thought we would. I would choose a cruise depending on our schedule and the price.

Will our next cruise be on a DCL? Yes.

Do we prefer cruises to the parks? No, I think everyone would say they still prefer the parks, but we also think the cruises are great.

Do we prefer Disney to all other vacations? Hmmmm. We do Disney every year, but we also enjoy hiking and camping and visiting the National Parks.

Hope everyone enjoys their cruise as much as we did. Cheers!

Thank you so much for your review! We also have that 12:15 flight back home to Seattle next month. Hearing about some late returns I was getting a bit nervous we might miss it.

Could you please tell me when your formal night was? My family is sailing on March 27 and we have the same itinerary as yours (Itinerary A). I've read on the disboard that formal night was changed to night 3....but then I saw a couple of navigators and they have formal night as night 2. I just want to make sure that I don't book Palo dinner on the formal night.

Thanks

I'm not the OP but was on the same cruise. Formal night was the second night. They changed pirate night from PV to the first day at Cabo.

Hi, thanks for the great report. :thumbsup2

I will be traveling next year with my teen, and was wondering if your went to the teen club at all, if so any reviews?

Also, in Puerto Vallarta and Cabo are the beaches within walking distance? Final question, who were your servers???

Thanks again

We were Itinerary A

Day 1 - LA Cruise Casual
Day 2 - At Sea Formal
Day 3 - At Sea Cruise Casual
Day 4 - Puerto Vallarta Cruise Casual
Day 5 - Cabo Pirate
Day 6 - Cabo Semi Formal
Day 7 - At Sea Cruise Casual (although with late seating, many had packed their bags already so just wore what they were going to wear off the ship the next morning)
Day 8 - Return to LA

Our dining rotation was TAAPPTA
Sunday: cruise casual. Show: All Aboard.
Monday: Formal. Show: The Golden Mickeys. Day @ Sea.
Tuesday: Cruise Casual. Show: Physical Comedy of Heath Hyche. Day @ Sea.
Wednesday: Casual. Show: Toy Story. Puerta Vallarta
Thursday: Casual. Pirate night. Show: 3D Movie Gnomeo & Juliet. Cabo
Friday: Semi-Formal. Show: Dreams. Cabo.
Saturday: Casual. Show: Final Farewell. Day @ Sea.

You could walk to the beach in Cabo. 10 minutes at a brisk pace. Longer if you stop to look in shops, etc. Or longer with younger kids. Streets felt safe. We followed a map. I had read about Medano Beach ahead of time so that is where we hung out. It was not to far from the Marina and was lovely. I've been so sun deprived this winter, it just felt great to lie on a sandy beach and feel so warm. Like I said, we rented an umbrella, you can also rent a lounger and beach chair. A couple near us rented all 3 for $15. There are restaurants nearby so you could also probably sit in their chairs and order food and drinks if you wanted. Areas of the beach were roped off for different activities. We were in front of the area for swimming. A little ways down that had water taxis that you could catch to take you back to the Marina or take you out to the Arches. You negotiate a price. Some guy wanted to give us water taxi ride back for $8, but we wanted to walk so we could see the sights. Also they rent kayaks and jet skis right there on the beach as well. I think the guy was telling us it was $40 for 30 minutes plus 10 free minutes to jetski. And we weren't asking, so we didn't attempt to negotiate, he was just offering. But all of that is just right steps away from where we were lounging and swimming.

In Puerto Vallarta, we walked to the beach from the old town area, where we were exploring. So we took the bus to the downtown/old town area, it was maybe a 15 or 20 minute ride, I wasn't paying that much attention. The ride was fun, sort of wild. If you like adventure, I would recommend it. We all loved the ride and felt like the locals were all trying to be very helpful with our broken spanish and some of their broken english. We walked through the old town, cobblestone streets, etc. And along the beach walk area. So yes, if you are walking in the old town area, you can easily walk to the waterfront. There were lots of restaurants and shops and areas to stop. We didn't rent an umbrella there because we sat at the Palapa restaurant and used their chairs and umbrella. There were also jet skis to rent nearby. I'm not sure if there is a beach you can walk to from the Marina or not. I was told the taxi from the Marina to downtown would be about $3- 4 per person, and we should negotiate with the driver ahead of time, but we took the bus.

As for the kid clubs... My almost 13 year old and 14 year old both went in the Edge because they had cousins on the cruise that were going to the Edge, so my 14 year old chose that instead of the teen club. They liked the scavenger hunts and pool party and some of the other activities. They played games there sometimes, I think they had Wii and Kinect. They had a dance party one night. They met other kids and played games with them too, not just their cousins. Both said the Edge was fun and both really liked the counselors. They definitely didn't spend all of their time there, but they did hang there sometimes and when there was an activity that sounded fun, they made sure they were there.

Our servers were Mark and Antonia. We liked them. Mark from the Philippines has been with DCL for 12+ years, Antonia was new.

Cheers!

Thanks NWgoofyfamily and LKFan for the formal night info. Could you tell me when your character breakfast is? We have our Palo brunch booked on Day 7, would this be on the same day as our character breakfast?

Thanks

There were a couple of character breakfasts. I'm not sure how they assigned them but our's happened to be on day 7. I think (but am not sure) that there was another one on day 2.

NWGoofyfan - we were on this same cruise! We also had the TAAPPTA rotation - did you have early or late dining? We had early.

Canadian cruiser - our character breakfast was scheduled for 8am Tuesday morning. Our servers said the breakfast was on all 3 sea days.

We had late dining and I think the character breakfast was around 9 am. You should be able to go to the character breakfast and not eat and then go to brunch afterwards.

Great report! We are planning on our own to Medano Beach as well, good to know we can walk it if we feel like it.

I'm with you on the National Parks. We try to visit a new one every year. Our summer vacations are roadtrips and NPs, we save DCL/WDW for fall or spring break.

Thank you so much for the report - exactly what I have been looking for in regards to the Edge and Medano beach!

We were on the same cruise as NWgoofyfamily. Our character breakfast was the first sea day at 8 or 8:30 (can't remember) and we had Palo reservations for brunch that day. We just had a little fruit and coffee at the character breakfast. I was a bit disappointed with the characters. All of them except for Pluto raced through. I got no more than one photo of each and if my camera wasn't ready I would have missed the opportunity.

We walked to and from the beach in Puerto Vallarta - when we went out the security exit we turned right and passed the other cruise gates which ends at a market where locals sell things. We walked to the rear of the market and there was an entrance to the beach right next to the first hotel. We had a nice walk past a number of hotels. There were a lot of families enjoying the beach. We had to say no thanks to a number of people selling things on the beach. It didn't bother us but we did need to say no to each one. There were places to stop along the way to stop for a drink and just relax.
