Here is a quick update from AKV.

The resort is GREAT! Some quick points:

1) I disagree with reports of a lack of storage for families in studios. There are four small drawers and a huge storage area in the entertainment center. There is a large wardrobe with one side dedicated to hanging clothes and the other side wide open. There is another medium drawer under a suitcase platform. Finally, there is an entry closet with a hanging rod. In short, there seems to be at least as much storage as other DVC studios (we've stayed in all of them).
2) We were a bit disappointed with the sofa bed. We were hoping for the "new style" of sofa beds found at BCV, etc. However, it is MUCH more comfortable than the SSR sofa bed.
3) Mara rocks for quick service. It has hamburgers, wraps, pizza, chicken strips, daily specials, shrimp, fresh cheesecake and carrot cake, etc. In our opinion, it is the BEST counter service at DVC (VWL gets second).
4) The room is gorgeous!
5) Not all savanna view rooms are so great. We were unhappy with 5585 as it had a large water pipe on the front and side of the balcony. It also was at the end of two savannas. We were promptly moved. Next time we'll recommend the Zebra trail near the elevator.
6) Souvenier shopping at the resort is great!
7) We're not huge fans of the pool. Wish the slide was a bit more daring. It seems best suited to those 5 years old and younger.
8) As of last night, they were still charging for internet access.
9) Check-in was a disaster. There was a long wait and a man arguing about how his room wasn't ready at 3:45pm. I thought that they should give him a complimentary card that explains what 4:00pm looks like on a watch. :) It was a bit disconcerting, though, to have FOUR check-in CMs in Concierge (there were only 4 for all of non-Concierge) not doing anything while the line for the rest of us was over 30 minutes. Why not allow spillover when no one is waiting in Concierge?
10) Lots of kids activities that are well done in the pool area.
11) Interesting tradeoff in the bathroom area. There is a large double-sinked vanity outside the bath/shower/toilet area. While that enlargement is very welcome (vs. SSR), the resulting bath/shower/toilet area is very small. There is barely enough room to shut the door!

We'll definitely be back!

Thanks for the report. I am so looking forward to our first AKV stay. I have read reports that rooms seem dark. Are they really?

On another matter OT, I know we are switching servers. IS anyone getting email notifications when threads are updated? I am just wondering if my spam filter is blocking them.

Thanks!

While it's not BCV, BWV, OKW or SSR, I didn't think the rooms seemed too "dark". I loved the decor and ambiance of the AKV rooms.

Is it better than the BC?

Was it a big deal to be moved??????
Was your room ready at checkin?

Sounds like the WL slide, is it?
Was the pool warm? Anything fun pool things?

10) Lots of kids activities that are well done in the pool area.

Can you elaborate we will be there in March, Easter.

Thanks for the report.

Thanks for that report. It makes me want to stay at the villas even more.

Just to clarify the check-in lines problem. I'm not sure if you meant there were 2 check-in lines - one for concierge and another for non-concierge. That's what we thought at first, too. But those are the actual concierge staff for the hotel. So there's a line for check-in and a line for your concierge needs like dining reservations.

I found the concierge staff to be less than helpful. One example is that I asked for a list of the Disney Dining Experience restaurants and was handed a list of the Disney Dining Plan restaurants. When I explained what I needed, she asked the lady next to her who pulled out the DDP list again. I finally gave up and left.

Thanks for the report.

We are doing a split stay around the July 4th time frame and finishing at AKV after our BWV stay .

Great report! Sounds like you had a good trip. As far as the reports on the lack of storage in the studios, the problem is that not all of the studios have an entry closet. In those studios, all of the things that were stored in your closet (ironing board, vacuum cleaner, etc.) are stored in the armoire instead. The large storage area in the entertainment center normally houses the pack-and-play. So that leaves four small drawers, half an armoire and the medium drawer in the little bench, except for the Value studios which don't have that little bench.

Check-in time for cash guests is 3:00pm. Only DVC is 4:00pm.

It was a bit disconcerting, though, to have FOUR check-in CMs in Concierge (there were only 4 for all of non-Concierge) not doing anything while the line for the rest of us was over 30 minutes. Why not allow spillover when no one is waiting in Concierge?

I agree. We waited at least 30 minutes to check-in earlier this year. Last time I stayed at SSR I counted 13 positions staffed and actively helping arriving guests--we only waited in line 2-3 minutes before being helped ourselves. While I'm relying on my memory, I don't recall AKL having that many CMs checking-in arriving guests.

Like another poster, we had a poor experience with the Concierge staff as well. I needed to add a day to my daughter's MYW ticket. There was no wait at the concierge desk, so I literally stopped at the spur-of-the-moment while passing thru the lobby on an errand. After taking my ticket, the CM punched a few keys on the computer and said that she couldn't help me because the computer was down. She made an off-hand comment that I could just take care of it at the theme park. I sort of chuckled and told her I was trying to avoid the Guest Relations lines by doing it at the resort. She just shrugged her shoulders.

I'm sure the matter was out of her hands, but the interaction was more than a bit cold. Not much sympathy, just "sorry...can't help...try the parks." :headache:

I don't find the rooms dark. I did find the lobby dark until my eyes adjusted. We are having a great time. It is my wife and DD10's favorite resort. For my DD13 and myself, we still have a slight preference for BCV, BWV, and WLV.

We stayed at AKL last Dec. 06 (before we became DVC members:goodvibes ) and we also had a long wait of at least 20 minutes to talk to the cm and at least 15 to 20 min until we received all our tickets and room information. But the cm was very nice to talk to. Our room still wasn't ready until 3pm even though we checked in at 10am which was ok. Our stay was great!!! :cloud9: and we also loved the mara especially the African beef stew-

I do not understand what that large open part of the wardrobe is for. I thought it would be nice if they put shelves in that side.

Glad you enjoyed your stay!

Thanks for the review....

Can't wait to try AKV.....

How would you compare the pool slide to WL?
thanks

You are correct. There are no lines for concierge check in. You get taken directly to the 6th floor and checked in there for concierge.

Don't have AKV experience with concierge desk, but OKW were great this trip. Very pleasant CMs and we got print out of our adrs upon request and they cancelled and made new adr within a flash.

Many of the studios do not have the entryway closet so they store the ironing board, vacuum cleaner, etc. in the open part of the wardrobe. For some reason even in the studios that do have a broom closet, they left half of the wardrobe unfinished. More hanging space or some shelves would be great.

We just returned from a great 4-night stay in an AKV studio. We felt that we had plenty of space for clothing, although we did have the closet in the entryway. We chose to put the pack-n-play into the big open space in the wardrobe (with the ironing board and the vacuum cleaner), leaving space there for extra clothes. Our family of 3 did fine in this studio--we even had lots of extra hangers in both the wardrobe and the entryway closet, although we tried to pack "light."
