a big mistake??

we jumped at the last minute into buying into SSR, we have a family trip planned for first week of dec 2007 thinking this would be the great time to make this purchase to help with this big trip, there will be 12 traveling planning on using 360 pts for this trip, our uy is aug. I thought we could bank 2006 pts and then in aug 2007 and borrow the rest out of 2008, we would have the amount needed, now I find I have to use all those pts before we plan on being there cause they won't carry over into dec 2007, am I understanding that now? Normal we do travel in the time frame of our uy would cover but wnat to see dis one time with lights, someone want to try to explain to me what I can do now, to cover myself for this trip without paying cash for the stay.

Your use year is August? So you have 2005 points that you can bank. You don't say how many points you own. Those banked 2005 points become 2006 points, and both totals will be available for a trip from August 1st, 2006 through July 31, 2007. It looks to me like you could do this trip (depending on how many points you own) this year quite easily. Assuming you have 150 points, you will have 300 points available for a stay early December this year, plus you can borrow one year ahead (in this case, 2007 points) to fill out that reservation. If you are asking if you can bank the 2005 AND 2006 points into 2007, the answer is no. You can have 3 years of points available to you with banking and borrowing, but that assumes that you do the trip in the middle year.

I just wanted to add that WHEN you book has nothing to do with your use year. You can always book at teh 11 month window at your home resort, and MS will take the points from the correct use year.

If you still must have a Dec. 2007 vacation, you can bank your 2006 points into 2007. That means those points are all available for stays from August 1, 2007-July 31, 2008. When you call next January to make the reservation, you will be useing both 2006 points and 2007 points, and you CAN borrow 2008 points for that ressie. Just be sure you use or rent out your 2005 points. You probably do NOT want to bank those, but instead either use them this year or rent them before July 31 this year.

we got 2005 pts so we are extending our june vacation two more nights to stay at ssr and they told me I had to bank the left over ones or lose them so I had them bank I think it was 88 pts of the 2005 pts, so now they become points to be used in 2006 right? and when august comes I will get 150 pts to be used by august 2007? I am sorry I just can't get this figured out, I really am not a stupid person just can't get this down yet

All points use is based on date of stay.

2005 points are good for stays 8/1/05 to 7/31/06
2006 points are good for stays 8/1/06 to 7/31/07
2007 points are good for stays 8/1/07 to 8/31/08
2008 points are good for stays 8/1/08 to 8/31/09

When you bank, they move down a year, when you borrow they move up a year. Leftover 2005 points can be banked into 2006 and would have to be used by 7/31/07. Be careful of your banking deadlines. With an August use year, 100% can be banked by 1/31, 50% by 4/30, 25% by 5/31.

The exception is new owners. They are provided forgiveness on naking deadlines for the initial UY of their contract.

You will have 450 pts. available for your Dec. 2007 trip:

150 Aug. 2006 Points Banked
150 Aug. 2007 Points; and
150 Agu. 2008 Points Borrowed

And you will still have use of your 150 Aug. 2005 points however you wish!

You have that right, but you may still lose those banked 2005 points unless you also take a 2006 trip. In my scenario, you must bank ALL of your 2006 points into 2007 and borrow from 2008 to book that December 2007 trip. Those 2005 banked points are NOT part of the equation for that particular trip, because they MUST be used before July 31, 2007.

It depends on if you banked or not. If you do not bank, points are good for the whole of your use year only. If you bank points, those points are good for the whole of the NEXT use year (that you banked them into). Essentially, that does mean you have two years to use them, but it is a bit different than that. For example: you have 150 points in 2005 use year. You bank ALL of those into your 2006 use year, and now you MUST use at least 150 points in your 2006 use year (ostensibly the banked ones) or lose those 2005 points. The idea is that you can use 3 years worth of points if you use them in the middle year.

Your 2005 points, if your UY is August, must be used by July '06 UNLESS you bank them. Then you can use them until July '07. But you must bank them by the deadline.

Still can't figure out how people have points left over! We are always in borrowing mode!

If you find you can't bank this year's points and can't take a trip to use them you should try to rent them and that will help with passes or food for the Dec 2007 trip or maintenance fees. Have fun planning the trip and how you will let all those people know a WDW DVC is in thier future.

Don't feel stupid. It can be rather cumbersome until you truly understand the way it works. I have been in the same situation....you have something planned in your mind and then when you actually are getting ready to finalize it you sometimes get confused and scared that you did something wrong. Someone here on these boards always come through with the answers!!!!
