A ‘touchy’ question *Update page 1*

I have a close friend who is planning a surprise for his wife’s birthday at WDW. He has come to me for advice.

This seemed like a pretty good idea at the time to both of us, right up until he asked me his very first question. I am such a big help, I can’t even answer the first question.

But I have 70,000 close friends.

So, I need your help, and with my track record in helping him out so far, I will need your help again later. This will be just between us though, let him think I am brilliant Disney planner and not a grasshopper-fearing dingle-ling.

Now the question is would she like a spa treatment as part of her surprise?

My initial reaction to this question was complete horror. According to this reaction, I am going to have to assume that a spa treatment is NOT something I would like at all.

But that is me and my reasons for not liking the idea of a spa treatment are simple.

First, my kids aren’t as young as theirs and I wouldn’t want to go do something by myself. I haven’t seen my son in a year, so where ever he is, I will be, with the exception of the bathroom.

I’ll be waiting just outside the door.

However, their kids haven’t hit double digits in age yet, so maybe she would enjoy the break. When my kids were under the age of 10, if someone had asked me if I wanted to fly to Florida strapped to the wing of the plane with bungee cords, I would have jumped at the chance at some alone time.

Hang on; is it possible that bungee jumping was thought up by a mother of kids under the age of 10 that was looking for a few seconds of personal time? I bet I’m on to something with that.

So, if you are a parent of younger kids, would you like to bungee jump from the wing of a plane, or would you prefer a spa treatment?

Another reason I have for not being able to answer this question is that I have never had a spa treatment. From what I have seen on T.V, it seems to involve a certain amount of disrobing. Had someone done this to me on our last trip, depending on the day, there is a possibility of the spa treatment person seeing me in soggy man panties.

They are probably not paid enough for that.

The closest I came to any kind of a treatment was the one and only manicure I ever had. The girl drove wooden sticks into my cuticles and my fingers throbbed the rest of the day. She really only hurt a couple of my fingers, the rest of my fingers suffered sympathy pains. I found it to be unpleasant.

Then, of course is the touching part of a spa treatment. I have issues with skin-to-skin contact as it is, I can’t imagine paying someone to do it. Maybe it’s a different experience when the person doing the touching isn’t all clammy, sticky and sweaty.

Maybe his wife has gotten used to being touched by little people with peanut butter on their fingers. Maybe being touched by adults that smell like flowers would be a welcomed change.

So my friends, what do you think? If your husband was planning a surprise for you, how would you feel about a spa treatment?

*Update* Answers to your questions from my CLOSE friend

He said:
I was planning on a gift certificate, so she could choose her treatment. Cost right now is not a problem. I just have to plan for it. I'm thinking she wouldn't go for the touchy-feely massage thing (Well, maybe the "tired legs" version), but would do a ped-/man-icure, or a facial.

You asked:
How long will they have at WDW? If it's going to be rushed, then it may not be worth it.

He said:

We're going to be there for 7+ days, so no worries there. I was thinking about 1/2way through the trip, so day 3 or 4, I'd take the kids to blank or blank while she went to the Spa.

You asked:
Have the kids been to WDW before? If no, then she may not want to miss a moment

He said "Yes, several times."

You asked:
How long would she have to travel to ge to the treatment?

He said "Not far."

I couldn't directly quote him without giving too much away. ;) Thanks again for your help! LY/MI!!

My DH has surprised me with a spa treatment, and I LOVED it.

Nope, I couldn't handle a spa treatment. Some of the girls I work with swear by their weekly massages as a way to unwind, but I'm so ticklish there's no way I can ever imagine a massage relaxing me - I'd be even more tense afterward! But that's just me......

I vote for a Spa treatment. I think she will like the time to pamper herself.

I would love a spa treatment. My daughter and I had facials on the DCL, oh my, they were fabulous. And we've gone for a "day of beauty" that included a massage, facial, manicure, and pedicure. I am not usually into "those" types of things, I never wear makeup and when I am not working I am in jeans and Tshirts, but I got tell you I could get used to spa treatments really easily!! I vote that she'd love it.

Spas are not for me, I vote no. I even gave up the pedicure/manicure gift certificate my children and DH presented me with last Mother's Day.

As a mom to three little guys 5 and under, I would LOVE a spa treatment! Someone doing something for ME? Pure bliss. :)

I also would love a spa treatment, but how long will they be there? It could take a big chunk of time away from family Disney time. I would love it if we were going for longer than 5 or 6 days so I wouldn't feel left out of anything.

I am not a massage-type person either BUT I love a facial, especially the ones at the Spa there at WDW. Plus, if he gets her a gift certificate for the spa, then she can choose what she wants and there's many things to chose from. I have to vote YES.

I have issues with skin-to-skin contact as it is,

I do not want anyone touching me that I have not birthed a child for.;)

I'm with you, I wouldn't enjoy one. I know many people, who do thoroughly enjoy them. I guess her husband and you, as her good friend, would probably know best.

Perhaps you can just work it into a conversation with her and find out her thoughts and feelings.

I wouldn't like it, but I don't really like massages, manicures, etc. either. I'd much rather have a gift certificate to a store I like and let me go shopping! That's much more therapudic for me than any Spa treatment :)
But I know that a lot of my friends LOVE to go to the Spa, so it just depends on the person.

Put my name in the "Yes" column! There is nothing better than a massage. Unless perhaps it's paired with a facial! DH did give me a spa treatment for one of our anniversaries and it was wonderful. Whenever we take a cruise, the spa is the first place I head for an appointment!

For my last birthday, DH gave me a gift certificate for a spa treatment (my first ever). It took me six months to use it, because of the very things you were talking about. Having a stranger massaging my flesh was not something that I was looking forward to at all!

When I made the appointment they asked if I had a male/female preference for the massage. Definitely wanted a female. When I arrived, she introduced herself, and set me up in a candle lit, lavender scented, room There was soft music playing, and warm blankets to climb into on the table. I was alone in the room for several minutes, which I feel helped a lot. After that, I started to relax, and thoroughly enjoyed the massage. I had my first ever pedicure that day too. Loved it!

What a great husband she has! I say yes to the spa treatment!

I would love one and I have one child who is 6. I might even take the bungee cord from a plane option as well. hee hee

I just had to tell you, delswife, that I even enjoy reading your questions. You are so talented in writing!!!

Love ya, mean it!!!

BAHHAHAHA! That was great!

Thanks for all the responces so far, I am going to show this to my 'close friend'.

And thanks Angie!

I love spa treatments at home, but wouldn't waste the time away from the Mouse at the World. Now, if I was totally surprised (like, "I'm home honey, grab your coat we're going to Disney") I might want to have my toes done if open toed shoes were packed, but I do spend most Disney hours in running shoes.

My SIL was surprised with a spa treatment and cried all the way there and during the massage because she didn't want to miss a minute of her children at Disney. Also, my DB is very responsible, but she worried the whole time that he'd lose the kids. Kinda hard to relax under those circumstances.

Can't wait to see the next trip report when you get home!

As a mother of 5 little ones under the age of 9, I would say no to the spa treatment and yes in an in house babysitter so I could spend some time with hubby at any park or downtown Disney. I am not a touchy feeley kind of person, but that's just me. I would love a babysitter to do as I like though.
