99 cent groceries

I decided (for my DH and me) that we are going to try a month of 99cent store grocery shopping. We are going to attempt to use only groceries from the 99cent store to save money for our Sept08 trip. I have been buying from my fave 99cent store for years, and they are getting larger varieties of produce all the time. Some of the name brands offerings are surprising, and after a few mis-steps on 'generics' or unknown brands, I've learned a few lessons. I got the idea after making a $1.49 dinner for two the other night of KRAFT macaroni and cheese with Porticelli mushrooms (99cents)with my addition of Morrell polish sausage (49cents for half of the sausage). Wish us luck and why not try it yourself?

Our dollar stores have some food items but honestly, I've never bought any of it. Some of the items are more money than they would be if I got them at Meijer or Target on sale and used a coupon.

I made that mistake before too. We were trying to make a basket for the school's silent auction. I stopped at the Dollar Tree first and then went on to Walmart. Should have gone to Walmart first - everything was cheaper there.

I must say that I made dinner for me and my two kids last night for 26 cents!! Wish that could happen more often.

I bought a pack of hot dogs from Target for $1.27, used a 75 cent off coupon. Made 5 of the hot dogs (half the pack) - my kids don't eat the bun - they each had 2 of the hot dogs cut up with cornbread that my mom had sent home with us Sunday afternoon. I wrapped my one hot dog up in a piece of sandwich bread.

I have a Dealz close by! They have plenty of stuff to make meals with. No produce or fresh meat, but lots of frozen foods, bread, canned and boxed items. I think Aldi's is a great place and would give you more options than your 99 cent store at good pirces, if you have one close by.:)

Good luck to you.

I can't bring myself to buy many food items in the dollar store. I just don't trust them. And my local supermarket doubles coupons, so I can usually get stuff cheaper there anyway. I do love to buy wrapping paper, greeting cards & craft items at the dollar store.

I see the health nuts flaming this thread shortly, just like all of the other budget eating threads that have been posted.

Most edible items in my local Dollar Tree are actually cheaper with coupons at Meijer or Kroger. Even some regular prices at the grocery are cheaper than the Dollar Tree.

Granted, we do not have .99 stores around here, they may have a better selection than we have in our area.

Could I join in for support on this thread...
I would like to cut grocery bill before we go too. I have a stocked deep freeze and pantry. Lots of cereal, frozen entree's, pasta's, canned soups, veggies. So I am good shape.

I just can;t get motivated to put it together into a meal.
If I could in a pinch, need to drop in with a few items and help me put together a meal receipe out of it?
I will get into the deep freeze to make an inventory of that. The rest is like everyone elses cabinates.

I am a cooker, roast, stews, just about anything. I love to try new things like Tex/MEx, roll ups sandwiches.

Where does everyone cut grocery bills?
I had a problem with my husband shopping for a hobby, not a weeks order. He spends way too much.

Do you have a weekly list to use? Is there a good standby cheap?
I just so need to revamp him. If it is buy 10 for $10 he will buy all ten!!!
If it is on sale buy one get one free, he buys them everyday of the week.

Getting stressed over the money....

I've seen some really great deals in The Dollar Tree but be very cautious and check the expiration/sell by dates.

Does he not work? My dad does the same thing but he is bored and retired. I gave him a fix it list for both houses and guess what? Too tired to shop :D

The only food our Dollar Tree sells is junk food. Chips, cookies, nuts..... Names I've never heard of & sometimes more money than I can get things at Walmart for.

Your 99 cent store actually sells FOOD? REAL FOOD? PRODUCE? MEAT? DAIRY? wow.

Name brand food? Do they take coupons on them too?
