I think I'm going to take a chance and go ahead and get the shot this year - even though it may make me sick..

Kicking around the idea of getting the pnuemonia shot too because I seem to get pnuemonia every single year..

Anyone know if I can get them both at once (as in "the same day")?

If I'm fortunate enough to head down to Florida after the New Year I sure as heck don't want to get sick on the way down - or sick after I'm there! :earseek:

Yep, you can get them on the same day. My son got the pneumonia vaccine one year, same day as his flu shot.

I am worried about this flu shot but they are advising my husband to take it as he is considered a high risk.

Will he get sick from it???? Is that the general consensus about this shot or is it the luck of the draw...some get sick, some do not...

For those concerned about getting sick from the flu vaccine, I used to get sick with flulike symptoms after getting the flu vaccine when I'd get it 15 years ago. I got it two years in a row in the early nineties and both times had the flu within a couple weeks. Yuck!

However, DH and I've both gotten the flu shot every year since we had kids and I haven't had any negative side effects. I'm not sure if the manufacturers have changed the way they produce the vaccine or what, but I have nothing but good things to say about getting a flu shot in recent years.

Our family does still manage to get the flu about once per year, but the vaccine only protects against the strains that are suspected to be upcoming problems and with two young children, we always seem to catch EVERY germ out there.

C. Ann, good luck with your shots!

I will let you all know if he has any issues as he is having his at the Mass General Hospital tomorrow.. Keep your fingers crossed he does not sick from it as he does not need that right now..

C.Ann, hope all goes well with your shot too... thanks for answering me everyone on this thread...we do give out the best information on everything. :)

I get the flu shot every year. I something feel a little tired the next day, but that is about it. YES get thge pnuemonia shot. I have asthma and since I got this I have not had a bout with Asthamic Bronchitis.

I got the flu shot on Friday and have flulike symptoms starting Saturday afternoon. Sore throat, fogginess, tired, nothing too bad though. I still have the symptoms but they seem to be getting better.

From what I hear this isn't uncommon. They say that you cannot get the flu from a flu shot though.

I have had the flu shot each year for about the past 5 (just got this year last week). I did use to get the flu (or similar) almost every year before I started the shots; have not had since.

Good wishes for Tommy, MM.

I have always gotten a flu shot, except for last year. I plan on getting one this year as soon as they are available. We seem to be having a supply problem in Florida at the moment. I've never had a problem with them. I intend to have DD get one as well.

I work @Dept. of Social Services and the county provides us with shots each year (except last year). Nurses come and give them to us at the office. I've not had a bad reaction in the 10 or so years I've taken it and I've also not had the flu, either. I think it's a good idea.

I've gotten one every year except for last year. This year I can not find anywhere to get one. Doc said he did not have enough, and the two clinics I was going to go to cancelled due to lack of supply.

My DS and I got ours 2 weeks ago at a CVS flu clinic. They were giving both pneumonia and flu shots if you wanted them. My DH has asthma and got his flu shot at his pulmonary doctor's office earlier than we did. He is considered high risk because of the respiratory problems, so DS and I always get flu shots to try to keep from getting sick and then passing it on to DH.

I wasn't able to get the shot last year and began to feel "off" last New Year's Eve morning. I wound up with the real, honest-to-goodness flu. :cold: It put me in bed for a full week. I had a headache 'round the clock for the first 48 hours and a temp of 102.4 for three days before it ever began to go lower. I barricaded myself in the guest bedroom trying to keep everyone else from catching it. I told my DH to just throw me a bottle of Tylenol and run! It took a full 6 week's before I got my strength back so I was calling every place I could think of this year to find a shot.

The current flu shot is not made from live virus which is why you can no longer get the flu from the vaccine. It is NEVER advisable (though often done) to have more then one vaccine at a time. Vaccines weaken your immune system, if you are at risk get them a few weeks apart.
Please remember that the flu shot is only effective for the strain of flu it is manufactured for IT WILL NOT protect you from avian/bird flu. Also the Avian flu has been around for 10 years and never jumped from person to person. Might it happen? Of course. Might you get killed by lightening? Of course! Relax everyone, it's like "Wag the Chicken" or "The sky is falling. the Sky is falling!" I was in PA this past week and the media showed people flocking (no pun intended) for the shots because they were scared to death of the bird flu. It was the media's responsibility to correct this misconception but they did not. Shame on them! :guilty:

Actually you can take the two shots at the same time, otherwise they must be 6 weeks apart. And yes my asthma Dr. gave me both on the same day. He told me about the 6 week rule.

while I do believe that people get very sick following the shot - I don't believe it is "the flu" but some other kind of adverse reaction. Also, I do not believe you are immune the next day, I think I read it can take 2 weeks for full immunity...so it is possible to catch the flu in that time.

As for getting more than one shot at a time - while it is convenient, I would rethink it - many physicians realize that you should not immunize while someone is sick...the reasoning is that the immune system is already "busy" fighting of the initial sickness and an optimum immune response may not result if you get the shot at that time - by sort of the same reasoning, I would think the body would be better off building an immune response one shot at a time. I know many parents who break immunizations down as much as possible because of this (even though it means more appointments - my own ped. office will do this) - and also because they feel it is not wise to combine them as far as safety. Personally, I think it best to get shots one at a time and separate them by at least two weeks - but, as always, it is a personal decision and would depend on your personal situation - and the 6 week rule stated above for this particular situation may make it a problem in this case!
