Try a samll amount of dish detergent. If you have one like Dawn that cuts grease that would be best. I use Dawn on my grease stains on clothes..works great!

I was going to say Dawn also.

I had to use antibiotic ointment on my baby for impetigo a few months ago. I didn't want to use something as harsh as Dawn on my baby's head, so we just waited. It didn't take long to wear off. He didn't have much hair at the time, though.

I had outpatient surgery last week and I have to coat the incision with the ointment for 14 days. The incision is only about an inch but the greasy hair thing is all over one side of my head.

Shampoo alone didn't do a thing.

Ooh, after 7 days, I imagine it doesn't. I had a small cut on my head that I used it for, but I washed it each day. I dont' think I'd use Dawn dishwashing liquid near an incision. I think I'd just have greasy hair until it was healed a bit more.

I hope the Dawn works for you. Let us know.

Another interesting thing about the antibiotic ointment, a nurse told me last week that the ointment will stain clothing. So if you are using it at night, make sure to cover the area so it will not stain your bed clothes (I love that phrase).

Put the shampoo on your hair when it is dry and really rub it in then wash it as usual. I had to do this many years ago for a head injury and it worked.

Another vote for Dawn! About five years ago my neighbors four year old son decided to wash his hair with baby oil--almost an entire bottle of it! It was such a mess, and regular shampoo didn't do a thing. I suggested Dawn, and it took one washing and it was gone! Follow up with a conditioner though, as it will strip all teh natural oils out as well!

I'd try making a paste out of baby shampoo and baking soda and rubbing it into the child's hair really well. Rinse it well and repeat a few times if necessary. I got this idea from a family member who is a hair dresser when my DD got a TON of hair wax in her very fine hair.

Good luck. This really helped us, but it did look a bit greasier than normal for a day or two.

when my DD was 7 she wanted Pantene shampoo and container to make her hair "shiny and bouncy". I said no. Soooooo, she improvised and put Vaseline in her hair - it was definitely shiny.....

I frantically washed her hair 5 times that night! It still was gunky. The next day I called the hair stylist and she recommended Dawn dish liquid and also lemon juice. We did both - had to wash it a couple more times (DD used a LOT of Vaseline! :earseek: )

The combination of the two did the trick.

(And I made a trip to the store and bought the kid some Pantene shampoo and conditioner. She still uses this brand 13 years later!)

Many years ago I had below the waist length hair. I was trying to open a large tub of vaseline and ended up exploding it up in the air and splat! right on my head. It then slithered down my back and when I tryed to get it out, I just spread it over more of my head. :( I tried shampooing several times and nothing got it out. I went and got my Mom and she pushed me in the bathroom, wrapped my hair around her arm and commenced spraying 409 in my hair. I nearly cried. I told her my hair would be ruined. She told me to go wash it again with my normal shampoo and conditioner. Of course, as usual, she was right. :worship: Didn't damage my hair at all! And all of the vaseline came right out. I was stunned. :cheer2: I wouldn't use it on a regular basis, but as a one time solution, it really works. My hair was just as shiny and soft as it usually was. (I don't know if I would put this on an incision, though!)

A few years ago my daughters put a lot of vaseline in their hair. We tried everything to get it out including Dawn detergent. What worked best for us was this stuff (for lack of a better word) called Goop. I found it in Wal-Mart in either the auto parts or hard ware section. It's designed to remove grease from your hands. Mechanics use this. I covered their hair with it..let it sit for a few minutes and washed. Good luck!

I'd try dish detergent first. If that doesn't work, maybe ask your hairdresser. I'd be careful about putting anything (other than dish detergent) not specifically designed for hair in your hair.

I'd be shocked if the detergent doesn't get it out though. That stuff is amazing.

I was taught this in Cosmetology School: saturate the area with Baby Powder and leave it on for a little while. Wash your hair as usual. Keep doing this until the ointment is all gone. It does work, but it might take several applications. Good luck!!
