Ah, I remember the good old days when we didn't have these fancy vaccinations. If you wanted the measles your mom would have to drop you of at your cousins house to play when he got it. Yes, it is. Measles is a potentially lethal disease. It can also result in deafness and/or brain damage. I'm glad you only got itchy when you were young. Consider yourself lucky.

Exactly Buttercup. While doing some geneology research I found the death certificate of a 1 year old- a great great uncle of mine who died of measles. Now we have vaccines. This is so rediculous. People are dying again of measles.

I think Buttercup's point was that celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and websites that cite one example of a vaccine "gone wrong" can really do a lot of damage to the collective public consciousness. Vaccination saves/protects WAY more lives than it damages. This is scientific fact. This is not even debatable. Yet, somehow, people still try to debate it. It really is incredible, really... and very sad for kids unlucky enough to have been born into the situation that end up with a life affecting or life ending disease as a result of parental resistance to basic science.

This. I was being flippant about a subject I should probably have treated more seriously. I just have talked to people before that support anti-vaccination because of facts on some random websites of questionable veracity, not realizing anyone can post anything on the Internet whether it has scientific/medical basis or not.

I agree that vaccination saves many more lives than it damages (unexpected allergic reactions to vaccine ingredients for example), and with more
people choosing not to vaccinate, it weakens herd immunity.

I didn't realize so many people travelled internationally without their vaccinations. I guess I am sheltered there. One of the first things I was told to do before traveling internationally was to make sure my vaccines were up to date and to get any vaccines that we don't typically get in the U.S. but that would be useful to where I was traveling. But I guess not everyone does that.
