i am looking to help someone out by buying her 9 and 11 year old daughters a few gifts for Christmas. My daughters are now in their early 20s so I have no clue what is popular for this age. Please help me out

ETA I was really hoping to "surprise" the mother with a few extra gifts to put under the tree, because I know she has had a rough year, so that is why I really just wanted some basic ideas of what these girls might like.

My niece is 10. She is just starting to get into makeup, hair, etc. Not so much into toys any more. She does like playing board games and drawing.

Different kids like different things. You have to get to know their interests, or at least ask the "someone" about her daughters' interests. You wouldn't post on here, asking, "What do 35 year-olds tend to like as presents?" Every 35 year-old is different. The same goes for 9 and 11 year-olds. It's nice that you're helping out, but you're going to have to learn a little more about the girls to get good presents for them.

For the 11 year old....Under Armour Hoody, lip glosses, nail polishes, dork diaries and diary of a whimpy kid books, warm fuzzy blanket.

For both the sequin pillows (mermaid) kohls sells them.

Go ahead and tell the mom that you want to get gifts for her daughters. It would be most helpful in order to get Christmas gifts that the girls will like. I know you wanted it to be a surprise for the mom too, but at least the girls will still be surprised

Books are always good, for the 9 year old I would recommend the Treehouse series.
Activity gift cards (like for movies or a trampoline park are really great)
Make up
Board games-exploding kittens is popular with that age group
Craft kits like beads for making bracelets or science kits

As others I find the art supply, museum gift shops and book stores a fun place to shop for kids 9-12 y/o.
I would stay away from makeup for that age group unless you know the mom would approve.

I agree on craft kits - they have ones now where you can make lip gloss or bath soaps etc. You can use a coupon at Michaels for a good deal. Also things from Claire's at the mall - diaries/journals , jewelry sets, lip gloss. The sequined pillows and fuzzy fleece blankets with a fun pattern are also a good idea. Some are still into certain toys or dolls at this age but it's hard to know.
Also Fun PJs (like the animal themed onesies with hoods if you know their sizes)
Good luck!

How about a massage/facial at the local luxury hotel/spa?

Baking sets (American girl/Williams Sonoma has a few good ones)
Those color changing sequin notebooks/pillows/bracelets are big right now
Slime making kit
Makeup set

I wouldn't go massage for young girls. I would go with a mani/pedi. Around here express manis are $10. Cheap and fun.

My girls are 11 and 12, but here are their likes:

Nail polish and nail stickers
Craft kits/slime kit
Legos
American Girl Dolls (then we buy the Our Generation clothes and accessories at Target, good quality)
Books- varies by child
Movie tickets
Gift cards- McD, Starbucks, Claire's, Chick Fil A, Target, Animal Jam or Club Penguin Island memberships,
Jewelry/Accessories/Hair things (Claire's)
Monster High/Ever After High/Barbie
Shopkins/Littlest Pet Shop/My Little Pony
Clothes/fun socks/fun PJs
Bedding accessories (fun pillows)/fun comforter or blanket

Slime is quite popular, so they would probably enjoy a gift bundle of glitter glue, contact solution, etc. to make the slime.

Craft kits in general are good for that age.

Fingerlings are popular if you can find them.

Anything from Justice- like little accessories, wallets, purses, etc.

Cute headphones or a mini bluetooth speaker.

Numnoms

gift cards so they can shop for themselves. Last year I bought initialed change purses and put gift cards inside, and also gave small jewelry and accessory sets

Fujifilm instax cameras and film
