I know it's technically tomorrow, but I decided to post this now.

I can't believe it's been so long since it happened. 8 years :sad2:

Do you remember what you were doing on 9/11/01?
How old were you?
Did you understand what was going on at the time?
Did you know anyone who died on 9/11?

I was in second grade, I believe. 7 years old, still quite young. I didn't get what was going on at all, just that it was very bad, and my parents were really upset. Our teachers wouldn't tell us anything (they said "ask your parents when you get home"). Now, of course, I understand what happened, and why it happened.

I don't know anyone who died on 9/11, but my friend, Kim (you may remember me posting about the accident that took her life this past May) was born 9/11/93. She would've been 16 tomorrow. There's a benefit concert for her tomorrow night.

No rude comments on this thread, please, as it's a serious subject.

It's already 11.09.09. here. Or 9/11.
I know, 8 years seems so long.
I was 7, and all I remember was hearing the teachers talking about it and then seeing the footage on the news when I got home.

I was seven, we were suppose to go get my first library card with the school that day, but that did not end up happening.

I was seven, and we were all working on some sort of worksheet in class. Our teacher was rushed out and told something, but we all didn't know what was going on, just that it was bad, because she looked very sad. We kept asking what was going on, because she kept saying to watch the news, etc., but she told us that she didn't want us to panic [or something like that...], and to ask our parents when we got home.

And no, I didn't know anyone. But it wrecks my heart just the same. :sad1:

R.I.P.

Do you remember what you were doing on 9/11/01? Going to my third grade class.
How old were you? 8
Did you understand what was going on at the time? I didn't know anything about it until, a year or so later.
Did you know anyone who died on 9/11? No.

We went on about our regular school day that day (I believe) so none of us knew about it the whole day. It was a long time ago.

3rd grade, 7 years old. I was in school, and everyone started getting picked up by their parents one by one. The teachers were talking about it, TVs were turned on, and there were announcements. My mom picked me up and I stayed at home. I didn't understand the monstrosity of what happened, but I do now, and it's still a touchy subject for me. Yes, I know people who died. My best friends dad was working in the building across from the WTC and barely got out in the knick of time. One of my classmates parents were some of the EMTs and firefighters responding. Many of my neighbors worked in or near the WTC, and thankfully were spared.

RIP to all those who died, except for the (BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP) suicide bombers/hijackers/anyone involved in the untimely demise.

I was in third grade.
My teacher got a phone call and started crying, and they sent us home like a half an hour early from school.
When my sister and I got off the bus, my mom was sitting on our living room floor just staring at the TV.

My friends aunt and uncle, both of whom I know, were in the city when it happened. That same friends other uncle, who i also know, was either in the building or near it (i honestly can't remember). But anyways, no one that I know was hurt.

RIP too all the people killed that day. :sad1:

I was in third grade. Teacher said 'Your parents will have a talk with you when you get home.'
And they did, and they reassured me that despite how safe I may feel in my own country, this can happen anywhere.
That's all I remember. I don't remember the first time I saw the pictures and the video. Probably in the weeks following that day.

I was in first grade, and seven years old.
we were sitting in class, the teacher got a call, and she looked upset.
soon a bunch of kids were getting called to get home and i was scared to know what was going on because all of the kids leaving.
i dont really remember what my parents told me, but i do remember all of the kids leaving school and only around 3 kids being left in the classroom.

Do you remember what you were doing on 9/11/01?

Yes. I had just gotten into my mom's car, which was parked at the church she used to work at, when we heard about the first plane crashing on the radio. I was in school when the second one hit and we seriously did NOTHING that day except watch the news and talk about what was going on. Like, half the school wasn't there by the time lunch rolled around anyway so there wasn't much use in doing anything else.

How old were you?

12ish.

Did you understand what was going on at the time?

I knew that a plane had crashed, but I didn't realize that it was anything more than that until I got home and my mom explained it to me. Honestly, I didn't even know what the twin towers were until 9/11 happened. :headache:

Did you know anyone who died on 9/11?

Nope.

I was sitting in my kindergarten class.

How old were you?
5

Did you understand what was going on at the time?
Nope. All i knew was that the teachers kept whispering things to each other.

Did you know anyone who died on 9/11?
No. But some of my friends father's were first responders.

I remember that everyone from my class was getting pulled out from their parents and me and about 3 other kids were the only ones left at the end of the day.
Also, I think that it hits us new yorkers a little harder than everyone else in the coutry. I don't mean that every other state isn't sad by what happened or anything like that. I just mean that since it's our state, and it was SO close to where I lived, it just hit us a little harder. I could see the smoke (although i don't remember it, but my grandpa has pictures of it) from the bay.

I also remeber that when I got home my mom brought me right into her bedroom and made me watch the tv. I remembered she was so sad but I didn't really understand what was happening.

My social studies teacher once told us a story about a person he knew (or his friend knew or something) that got out of the twin towers in time. They went out for a smoke (although they worked for the company that is about no smoking, i forget the name) and while she was outside, the first plane hit, and she got out. That's the only interesting story I know.

I was in 2nd grade when it happened. The thing that was weird about the whole thing for me was that we were in class, and they told us that there had been a plane crash in NYC, but for whatever reason they wouldn't tell us anything else and it seemed like they never wanted us to know what happened. We still had to have a full day with all class that day. They wouldn't even let us go outside for recess. It's not like anything would happen to us here. This is just small town Iowa. Seriously.

I was 9(I think) and in 4th grade...all I remember was my teacher was crying and a lot of kids were going home early...we could actually see the towers from my town but we didnt find out what happened till the end of the day when we had a prayer service. My aunt worked there but she was lucky and ran late to work and she got stuck in the subway.

i was in first or second grade

i dont really remember my teachers acting odd, it was so long ago .

i was called to go to the office, and to bring my stuff.

i was really confused because i didnt have any doctors/dentist appt's that i knew about .

my mom was waiting for me in the office & she looked so panic-y and frazzled .

she was hysterically calling my dad on the way home , i had no idea what was going on .

what i remember most is being in my kitchen watching the news with my mom , seeing the plane crash into the tower .

i was so confused .

i really wish i could remember more from that day , or at least have understood it more .

I was in the 7th grade, three days from turning 13. The principal announced what had happened over the intercom but I really didn't even know what the WTC or Pentagon were so it didn't really affect me too much. When I got home my mom was watching tv and was very upset about it. It honestly didn't hit me about how terrible it was until two to three years ago. I thought it was incredibly sad but didn't really "get it" at that age. I fortunately did not know anyone who died that day.

Very sad and I will never forget what happened.

I'm sure nothing would have happened but at the time all the school was thinking about was your safety. You were in a school full of very young children who I'm sure would not understand what was going on and would have been extremely frightened if they DID know and understand.

I was 10. I was in 5th grade. My day went on as usual because the school didn't tell us anything.

And call me jaded or unamerican, but I always get tired of hearing about 9/11. I feel like the only reason we talk about it is because it was so recent and that it propelled us to war. There have been so many other tragedies that aren't recognized. I can't remember the last time I heard somebody mention the Oklahoma City Bombings or the '93 bombing of the WTC. I dunno. Not trying to start anything, just statin' my opinion and thoughts.

I feel the same way. But I think that more people remember 9/11 than the '93 bombings because we lost SO many people on 9/11. And also because it went on for months trying to find people and picking up all the debree(sp?).

i agree

and i think september 11th memorials will die with our generation, just like d-day isn't really spoken of any more, i really don't think our children and our children's children will bother with remembering.

To be honest, I forgot the importance of today until yesterday night when someone mentioned it on Twitter. In fact, I forgot again until I came on today and saw this thread. I think remembering it has already died down, at least in the UK. The only things to really commemorate the day are a couple of documentaries, and they get shown any other day so it's not really very much.

I don't remember what I did on September 11th. I don't know why, I just don't... Only thing I remember is watching TV, and they stopped the show I was watching to bring news about what was going on.
