9-08-2010 Pirates through the Mediterranean/ Yo Ho! Yo Ho! A Pirates Life for Us

the birg (beerg for pronunciation) is usually the one they sell you anyway - 9 euro and gets you roundtrip to rome and back and is good for all the public transport in rome (metro/bus). You can buy them ahead of time, but i heard that is not as advisable because you are in only one of the time slots? Can't remember exactly. You can by them right at the train station. One tip i read on this board is to buy them at the newstand inside the train station vs the ticket window - the line is a lot shorter. The hoho will be i think around 20euro each. Not sure yet if we will do that or just grab a couple of cabs - that might end up being cheaper and easier. I would suggest you buy your colesseum tickets ahead of time as the line is long. If you don't - a tip is to buy them at palantine hill where there usually isn't much of a line at all and then walk back to the colesseum because the ticket gets you into both (as well as roman forum)
last time i just loved walking around the streets of rome. Dont' know if i will do it as much this time because we are on such a port intensive cruise and because of dd and because it might be quite hot when we are there.

thank you thank you thank you!

omg that would be awesome. Kimmy and i were trying to figure the best way to repack everything (knowing we will just be unpacking it again shortly thereafter).

oh, i just got a good idea.......i think i'll just bring a couple big black garbage bags to throw everything into, instead of repacking in the suitcases
!

Do you think that the stateroom host/hostess would give you a couple of the Disney laundry bags? They aren't as large, but you also wouldn't have to pack them up and bring them with you!:rolleyes1

Twee ...

I found the thread! Obviously. Hadn't checked in on here since 2008!

Everyone else ... wife (from Iowa) and I (from Nassau) expect to be on board what will be our 3rd. Magic cruise. We're DVC members and this will also be our third point exchange! We know Barcelona pretty well, and I'm trilingual English/Spanish/Italian so this itinerary was almost planned with me in mind!

BTW if anyone's interest in the music on the route, check out I Muvrini ... they're a regionally famous "group" of Corsican polyphonic singers. My favourite album of theirs: Umani. Hauntingly beautiful stuff.

In the meantime if we can offer any Nassau / Bahamas advice, let me know.

Nyloc in Nassau

Do you know if I can buy this ticket in advance online?
I do not, but looks like gatzsd posted a link and provided a better explaination of the ticket as well that you saw.

Renegade7 is me Johanna. My roommate is Kimberly (OCD for WD). I don't think she has posted here yet.

I got my room assignment - 6026. I did get a little pixie dust of going from a 9 GTY to an 8. Not the verandah I was hoping for. :) But that's OK. We will definitely try to upgrade at the port if available - so for all of you on the FE - our room number may change, but it is 6026 for now!

Thanks for all the good advice! My husband is from New York, so he is more confident in taxis than I am. I will definately tell him what you said to do. We will have children with us too, however, my husband is going to watch them while my mom and I do the tour of the Nacropolis. I think he might take the kids to the top of St. Peter's and then we'll meet up after our tour. It sounds like there are a few DIS families that may be walking to the train. Maybe we can all meet and walk together? Thanks again!!!

Yes, just fake your best italian accent and state your destination in italian and they usually don't question. Whenever I had "asked" - How much is it to such and such - they always gave me an over inflated price - I think because I'm American and taxi drivers like to take advantage of Americans. Hopefully they should just go off the meter and not take the "long" way around.
Yes, that would be great to walk together to the train (albeit a relatively short walk once you get off the port shuttle) - however I hate to make solid plans of meeting when kids are involved because who knows what kind of wrench they will throw you and I don't want to hold anyone else up waiting for me or vice versa. Sounds like we are organizing a DIS meet? - so at least if we see people we know/recognize, it might make things easier.

I updated the list for you, just put a note that you're going to try for an upgrade at the port! (fingers crossed for you!)

Hi We are just joining the cruise for our 20th anniversary--leaving the kids behind this time and looking to join up with some people on some private excursions. We're pretty adventurous and thought it would be great to share in some of the cost to get in and do stuff.:) DOes anyone have any private tours with space?? If so, where? Or if your looking to set something up we'll be p osting our ideas. My husband lived in Malta for a semester so we're looking to rent a vehicle and go see the highlights there on our own. We'd like to share a private tour guide in Rome if anyone is interested. ANyway..this is our first time cruising and any ideas, openings, encouragement would be welcome!

Welcome Aboard!

We were wondering if anyone was going to do Naples on their own or if everyone was booking an excursion? We thought about doing Pompei, but weren't too sure about the safety and directions of walking from the ship to the train station. Any thoughts???

I checked into a private "tour guide" that was recommended to me for Naples/Pompeii that sounds very promising. I can forward the info to you if you are interested. It's a family owned company.

Just an FYI, did a private tour in 2007. Disney did the some of the same tour. But you will not regret going on your own. I spent 3 1/2 glorious hours in Pompeii, then climbed Mt Vesuvius and in the afternoon went to Herculeam. It was definitely a tiring day but so worth it. Naples and Herculeum are not the best places to be walking around with by yourself but should be somewhat safe during the day. When we got back to the ship, some of my other DIS friends said that they were supposed to have 1 hr in Pompeii but ended up having only 45 min there. They were a bit disappointed.

If you have any questions about this place, please feel free to PM me or ask. I try to check in here but somehow get distracted.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone is going home on the morning of disembarkation.
We have a 10:30 am flight out of BCN and will most likely take a taxi to the train station and then take a train to the airport from there.

If anyone planning to get a private shuttle to the airport that morning?

Also, does anyone know if Disney offers an option to allow you to get off the ship early if you take your own luggage down? RCCL gave us the option last year.

I was going to post an answer but I see someone already did. FYI, on the 2007 Med cruise, I heard several announcements from DCL beggin anyone with an early flight - s/a before 10 am, to please make themselves known ASAP. I think they will expediate you off the ship once its been cleared. So make sure you tell Customer Service your flight plans.

ATTN: As we are latecomers, anyone have any room for 3 people on any of your private tours? I am just coming into this way too late. I have some contacts but if anyone is looking for spots to fill, please let me know. Also, I know that with this being the last Med, I'm sure there will be taxi's available but if there is a chance that someone needs bodies to fill up space, I'm your body. LOL - Thanks.

Hi Everyone,

DisneyVegas1,

Will you be joining us for the Malta tour?

Nyloc,
I've added you to our group.

eeyorelvr10,
If DisneyVegas1 decides not to join us, your group of 3 can join us.

I just want to make sure that everyone knows that this is not a guided tour. The English speaking driver will take us around the sights, but there will no formal guide. Our previous driver from the last trip was very informative and answered all our questions.

Malta Tour....I was wondering if you had room for 6 of us or if we should try to book our own van and driver. Thanks, Connie

Hi everyone,
I am booked on the Sept. 8, Mediterrean and September 18, Transatlantic. Looking forward to 24 days of disney magic.
I've got a Cat 5 for the Transatlantic and Cat 9 for Med. I'm not sure what my room numbers are.
It's my second/third disney cruise. I discovered the disboards three days before I left on my first disney cruise (Baltic - June 24th).
I'm traveling solo, and can't wait to meet other disboard members.
Amy
Orange County, California
PS I've got a lot of disboard reading to catch up.
PPS I wanted to tour the necropolis/St Paul's/Vatican but Disney Port Adventures said no one had booked the tour so I would have to buy the tour out. Anyone figured out another way to see the necropolis (St Paul's/Vatican)?
