8th grade grad gifts...any ideas?

Dss is graduating 8th grade. We (his mom, and his dad & I, stepmom) are having a joint, immediately family pool party for him. I'm being asked about gift ideas and have no clue. I know that his dad and I bought 2 tickets to see Rock of Ages on Broadway this summer for him. (A day in NYC just him and dad, they love to do this.) Any other suggestions? My parents and MIL, aunts, uncles, etc. are asking. Anyone know what are the cool things to have as a freshman in hs? What kind of bag? Coolest clothes? I'm clueless!

(Oh, and money isn't good. Mom lets him spend it all, it will be gone before fall. We would make him save it.)
