80 years since the passing of Anne Frank this week.

My mom was a technical writer in the UK for Disney Industrial Films during WW2.

After the war my mom stayed on the UK for feature film productions Disney was producing.

1948 - ‘49 mom wrote Meip Geis, who discovered Anne Franks diary thus was eventually invited to visit the Anne Frank house.

This way before it was open to the public. " Entering I first smelled the spices Anne frank wrote about in her diary" my mom mentioned.

Just some comments from a Dutchie... her name was Miep Gies, with 'ie', not 'ei'. This letter combination is pronounced the same way as 'ee' in 'deep' in English.

Anne Frank's statue in Amsterdam got defaced with red paint today, red paint to represent blood on her hands and the text 'free Gaza. It was the second time this month this happened. They are now thinking about putting up surveillance cameras around the statue.

Her diary was written in Dutch and that was her first language.

As for the spelling I got that off the net, must be a common corruption or translated version for better pronunciation. I’m good with it.

I still haven’t figured out how to pronounce Ypres France either unless I read it phonetically.

If you want to pronounce it the Flemmish way, the city is officially called Ieper, as it is in the Flemmish part of Belgium, it is pronounced like 'deeper' without the d.

Pronouncing it the French way is very similar, just drop the last e. 'Eepr'. If the 'pr' sound at the end is hard, you can get away with adding an 'u' at the end. 'u' as in 'stunt'. People in French Belgium or France will probably understand you. Just forget about the s at the end, it's silent.

I can recommend the sound-option on Google translate, it works well enough for French. Not as good for Dutch.

Mixing up 'ie' and 'ei' is a common mistake going from Dutch to English. Probably because the Dutch pronounciation of this combination doesn't really exist in English. My own last name has an 'ei'-combination in it. When some family members moved to the USA in the early 1900s, there was a misunderstanding on Ellis Island, when they tried to spell their name. And ever since there is a branch of our family tree in Texas with 'ie' instead of 'ei'

ie in Dutch = ee in English
ei in Dutch = ay in English (not really, but close)
