I was asked yesterday if I would babysit an 8 month old baby. My daughter is now 18 months old, so it's been a year since she was in this stage. I have a rough idea of what he is able to do, but was wondering what your kids or grandkids are doing at this age. What should I have avaliable and how much should I charge? I will be watching him for eight hours.

I'll bet the mom will come with all that he needs. I am sure it will be helpful if you ask for her carseat if you plan on an outing. You may want to drag out your walker/exersaucer.

I think I would charge $50.

PS I have never had a child this age, so I don't really know what I am talking about. Oh--and before the Dis police bust me for "fraud"--we adopted our son when he was 4.

LOL thanks for that ps.
We have a pack n' play and stroller if needed, so those may come in handy.

$50.00 sounds about right. Gosh my youngest is 2 and it does seem like a long time ago that he was 8months. But I will tell you if you only have daughter(s) it is much diffrent with boys even that young. Mine was much more "adventureous" (can you say wild) even at that age. Good Luck

Really? You have two kids and you really have to ask what to do with an 8 month old? Your son is only 18 months? Beyond words, really.

I believe the OP only has 1 child who is a she, according to her post. I guess you're the DIS police to whom IMGONNABE40! was referring.;) Talking about beyond words.

I bet the baby will be doing a lot of watching your 18 month old.:)

Yes I have two kids, but one of them is a stepson that I haven't raised when he was a baby or young child, and my daughter is 18 months old. I have some information and have been through it before, but just trying to get as much information as I can so when I talk to this baby's parents, I am prepared with answering questions and such. I understand that each child is different when it comes to stages, so I was wondering what parents or grandparents with kids at this age was currently doing with them.

It's true, you get so wrapped up in what your child is doing now and what she will be doing soon, you forget what she was doing back then.

We babysat for our godson when he was a little over a year old, we have two DD's 3 and 4, and it was like taking care of an alien. Besides, children develop at different rates, what your child did at 8 months may be completely different thatn what another chaild may be doing.

True and that's how I feel. My daughter is at the toddler stage now not a baby, and what she was doing at eight months may have been different.
I have already asked what the baby is able to do and such, but was wondering about other kids just to get more information.

my DD just turned 8 months on monday !

all babies vary..and she is an on the go babe so here is what she is currently doing

Crawling..omg does she crawl..into everything, everything in the mouth, exploreing textures and tastes.

Eating basic finger food (cheerios) and jar food. She is breast fed so i have no idea the amount for bottles

sitting up... furniture walkling , she says MA MA and DA DA and is working on UH Oh......she loves to watch peoples faces as they talk.

She will pull up on anything she can, I am sure your house is baby proofed for your own.

and atm..shes crawling into the other room....gotta go! :sunny:

I just babysat for my friends yesterday. Their kids are a boy, 9mo and a girl, 2yr. (almost3) My son is 9yr old. I was not childproofed enough. The girl was NEVER this active when I watched her. She was always easy to redirect. The boy....well...he was EVERYWHERE and into EVERYTHING!! I resorted to pulling out the play yard I had from when my son was an infant. (Not a playpen, but a plastic play area made by Todays Kids. It has 4 gate like sides and 2 activity panels.) He was fascinated with it. Even his sister liked playing in it. (Of course she figured out how to get in and out very quickly:) ) Oh...and he is a fast little dude too!! My friend brought several of their favorite toys and food with them to make their transition easier for the day. I also found that he didn't take as long of a nap as his sister. He played really hard though all day so I'm sure he slept well last night.:)

Thanks Carolyn. I have a playset that I can take out for him to play with, and I'm sure his mom will pack some things for him that he likes to play with.

My daughter is 9 mos today
She has been furniture surfing and walking with a pusher toy for about a month
grabs up finger food and eats it (like cheerios)
I break the cheerios in half (I'm very cautious)
she can go like heck in her walker and gets into trouble
grabs dish towels, baskets, tries to open cabinets
loves peekaboo and hiding games
loves it when you whistle to her and sing
just starting to notice cartoons like blues clues
loves our cat and petting him
loves going for walks in her stroller
still drinks formula in a bottle hasn't figured out the sippy cups yet
only says da da da
just got 6 teeth all at once (2 weeks time period)

hope that helps you

Thank you luv2nascar, that info. does help. Sounds like your daughter is keeping you really busy.

My DS will be 9 months on April 2nd.

He's not crawling or walking yet. He can roll over very well and can scoot around, but he's not actually crawling. He's getting closer and closer every day though. He loves to sit up and play with toys...especially toys that he can grab and shake and make noise. :) He also enjoys his exersaucer and leap frog learning table...he really loves standing up. He also enjoys going for walks in his stroller...loves to see what's going on around him. He LOVES to grab for things, too! It's his newest thing.

We're lucky if DS takes an hour long nap during the day...but he sleeps from about 7 to 6 every night so we're not complaining! ;)

DS has no teeth yet, but they are on the way so he is constantly chewing on his hands. We've tried teething toys, but he rathers his hands.

DS still eats babyfood and formula from a bottle. He's just starting to hold his bottle so hopefully he'll get better with the sippy cup...we've tried it a few times but he doesn't understand yet. No table food yet...waiting for his ped to give us the go ahead with that one (I'm a first time mom so I only do what the ped tells me ;) ), which I think will be at his nine month checkup.

HTH

Thanks Skuttle. I started to give my daughter table foods from an early age cause she didn't eat any baby food, but did give her rice cereal.
Leap Frog ;)

Ds #2 is 5 1/2 months but is developing VERY fast compared to Ds #1(they are all so different!) He has been sitting by himself for about 2 weeks now, is up on his hands and knees(oh boy! ) Holds his bottle when he wants, drinks his juice/water from a sippy cup(just started this at the beginning of the week) and is on solids(jar) 3 times a day plus bottles. He LOVES his exersaucer, going for walks in the stroller and we have one of those jumpy things that you hang over the doorways that he can't get enough of! Just started noticing Mickey's sing a long song videos:Pinkbounc and loves looking at himself in the mirror! He takes 2 naps a day(anywhere from 30-90 minutes) and sleeps 11-12 hours at night::yes:: Oh and he loves his Mickey or Pooh pacifier(not sure if that's a good thing!) and his blankey.

Again, they are all so different. Good luck!

Kim

Thank you Kim. My sister bought my daughter a Johnny Jumper thing, but she was to afraid to use it. Happy to hear that your son likes it-it does look fun doesn't it.
Your son seems to be very active and advanced for his age.
