8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan!

Just had a look and found this

Black lines are all the major fault lines around the world, Chile experiences some sort of earthquake almost weekly from what I can gather.

Notice the line right through New Zealand.

Looks like the plates are all shifting, hopefully the volcanoes don't start :(

We had an earthquake here in Hawaii, but it did not cause any affects to the tsunami that is possibly heading our way.

Now all of our airports are now closed.

This is just devestaing. Hope everyone who has a tsunami warning can get to higher ground and stay safe.

Yes. They have many different holding areas, and there are people-especially the tourist who have evacuated from their hotels. Some people are parked on the roads/scenic points...

I wake up at 4:20 am to go to work and my boyfriend called me right before then to tell me that a tsunami is supposed to hit the Oregon coast where my mother lives. I called her and she's awake and knows what's going on. She lives on a hill so she will be safe thank goodness. If you have family on the West Coast of the US please call them and tell them to get to higher ground.

Just heard on the news that this is the 7th largest Earthquake ever recorded. To put it in perspective- if you're old like me- the 1989 earthquake in Oakland CA was a 6.9.

I have a friend with a gorgeous place in SanDiego right on the ocean.... I'm worried about her and her family.

The plates always shift (and always have). We live on a dynamic earth and the earth's crust is constantly being created and destroyed at the plate margins. Earthquakes along the plate margins are very common. Actually, it's when the plates STOP shifting that we need to worry, since it means one of the plates is 'stuck' in relation to another, and stress starts to build (which eventually is released as a large quake).

My prayers go out to the people of Japan, and those affected by the tsunami around the world. They have some long days ahead of them.

Very scary stuff. I'm assuming from the video clips that the injuries and casualties are going to be much worse than what they are stating. How Awful. :sad1:

There was video (including the one posted first in this thread - around the 50 mark) in which you can see vehicles (and semis in a clip I saw on the morning news) attempting to turn around on highways that were flooding right in front of them. It was like something out of 2012. Terrifying.

I really hope it is not as bad as it looks. :sad1:

:scared1: OMG...How terrifying! I don't even know what to say, unreal....but yet it is.

Apparently the nuclear plant is in trouble as there is no electricity to "cool the core" :sad2:

These movements are becoming a lot more noticeable :(

I wish it would stop :(

That tsunami is very scary :sad1:

WOW!! The pictures are just horrific. I know several people that are supposed to be leaving for vacations in Hawaii soon I sure hope for EVERYONE'S sake that there is minimal damage-and for our west coast too.

I just can't imaging what an 8.9 earthquake feels like. :scared1:

I just looked up the Indonesian Tsunami and the earthquake that triggered that was about 9.1.

I've been following the news since I woke up. Very sad and scary! Praying for all of those affected by this tragedy.

I Was reading tweets that Tokyo Disneyland is flooding. Haven't seen anything on the news about it.

Wow-DH, DS, and DN were just there in November for a Jazz band trip. Such an awful thing to happen for any nation but the Japanese people are so undeserving of this. They will recover quickly though.

The local news here said that the entire pacific coast of North America is at risk. All the way up to Alaska. Something like 40+ countries are affected. I'm praying for everyone.

While I admit I have no knowledge of Japanese power regulations and processes, if the Japanese plants are built like the ones in Europe and America, the biggest risk is that the system will meltdown and the plant would have to be rebuilt from scratch, while the old reactor just has to sit there for the next few millenia. This would be a HUGE financial hit and a horrible disaster in its own right, but I strongly suspect people in Japan won't glow.

(Note: I have nuclear industry peeps in my family who find it amazing how the media will mis-interpret things for scare factor.)
