I love these questions. It's always great to learn more things about our sailing crew . . .

1) What is your FAVORITE SMELL??? The ocean right before a big storm

2) What are you having/HAD for Dinner tonight? Potato Soup, Turkey Biscuits (since I ran at of ham), and carrots sticks. OH and DH came home with ice cream!

3) If you could have ANYTHING for dinner tomorrow - what/where would it be? I'd love a repeat of the seven course meal DH took me to for my 40th birthday last year. It was amazing. Everything we had was French . . .except the sorbet. I don't think the restaurant is there anymore. It was in Norfolk, Virginia.

4) If you could fly anywhere for a day - one day - all expenses paid - where would you go - what would you do if naming ONE thing while on this travel fling? My little sister just moved in with a guy in Venice, CA. Although I wished they'd get married first, I'd love to go visit and make sure she's settled (okay and to walk on Venice Beach again . ..LOL)

5) Who is your FAVORITE Disney Character? Eyeore of course

6) What is your favorite number - 7 (the perfect number)

7) What is your astrological sign? Don't believe in this stuff . . but I am a strong chloric that would love to be a sanquine . .

Can't wait to hear everyone else's reponses .. .

I've certainly enjoyed your posts. Your graphics often have a on-topic visual appeal and I thought the Amtrack vs. driving analysis was informative. I do expect the board will slow down naturally due to the extended time frame and figured the run for the "mini's" would run its course anyway, but if you're going to error, error on the side of "fluff". :thumbsup2 :hippie: :goodvibes

Your encouragements are appreciated... but you should be CAREFUL not to encourage me too vigorously.... I have been known (or regarded by some) to be a nuisance with bandwidth in the past. Hence I've weened myself off the glorious and elaborate animations I occassionaly come across. I post two or three of those on one page and everyone with dial up might get shut out from viewing the page. It never occurred to me before that it would be a problem - but I certainly see how inconsiderate I was. I was having fun though - and the animations were quite elegant and - technically impressive. Once I posted a 300+ frame animation in something greater then VGA resolution. It took my cable modem about 5-10 minutes to load - so you can imagine what residential DSL folks were looking at... 15 minutes to hang up at that post - and dial up shut down over it. But once it downloaded it ran at normal speed and was ... elegant. I don't do those anymore... I just post the links now... with a warning. <chuckles>

I just had to share something here...

When i skimmed your replies here I had to instantly pause and ... INVOLUNTARILY I thought.... "MMMMM"..... I could smell the french fires....

..... and then I thought - how funny.... just the other day we drove past the local McDonalds and I said to my my older daughter in the back car seat ... "look sweetheart, they tore down the McDonalds".... and before I could say another word she started screaming... "Yeahhhh!!!! .... Hooorray!!!".....

Now her reaction may take some explainin'... you see... my DS is fairly health concious while I am generally health UN-concious.... and she otherwise is always chiding my dietary inclinations and getting me to agree to "deals" where if I get anything to eat that is on my "bad" list then she gets something out of me ... generally it's money. IE, If I get a pastrami sandwich then I gotta give her 50 bucks, or if I buy a hamburger then it's $5 for her on the spot. No renegotiations or squirming. AND... my kids are usually self regulating to make "healthy choices" for diet along the lines of what we teach them is healthy to eat.

WHich brings me to McDonalds. I have been known to come home with a McDonalds napkin or cup mysteriously in my car. I have not the faintest clue how it got there. So ... my dear BIL in Boston sends an email to my spouse to check out this movie with me called ... SUPERSIZE ME. It's a documentary/movie relating the 30+ days where a normal fit man adheres to a McDonalds only diet for 30 days. Skipping all the story except one defining moment which my daughter sometimes remarks on - about mid way through the 30 days the subject relates his ill state and abruptly throws up out the car window... and my daughters are fixed in shock. SHOCK. And they often will quip as we drive by a McDonalds... that we ARE NOT going there. I can't get them to go for it or near the place. Hence... when I said "look, they tore it down"... and my girl starting hooting with joy!!! Later I told her they were remodeling it and were probably gonna rebuild it. She was totally SILENT for a while after that remark....

I thought you and others might find that little story ... amusing.....

Now if you'll excuse me I have a pavlovian urge for some fries but I have a long drive to satisfy my urges... what am I to do???
I have watched almost all of that. They tore down our McD's also, it looks like it will be another month or so before it opens. I haven't been inside a newer one, but they say they have leather couches and are pretty nice.

So is a post consisting solely of a picture of a jar of fluff a "fluff" post or not?

Oh hardy har har.
If it was posting only to get closer to a mini- then yes. If not, then no.
Don't give me a hard time... or I'll sling some boogers at you or sneeze in your direction or something. This wench doesn't feel very wenchy tonight... darn allergies.

When I posted it, it was 1/2 humor and 1/2 fluff (but 100% artificial flavors & colors).

Send me to the Mickey Jail. I posted Fluff, and now I'm posting about posting fluff. I must be stopped. ;)

It's like the new "f" word.:rotfl:

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Oh my goodness...even with a 3 hour nap today I am getting tired & can't stop giggling now. :lmao:

G'nite folks! My poor bruises (from the roller-skating yesterday) are telling me they need some rest  I'm sure I'll be terribly behind again come tomorrow. Maybe the snow will be so bad I'll have to stay home for a while tomorrow morning as they clear the roads :woohoo:
Feel better, Pamela . . .just think of the great exercise you got . . .LOL Here's hoping you're getting the snow that is skipping us (AGAIN!!):confused3

Aw Bip I'm sorry you're not feeling well tonight either. Be careful where you sneeze or fling stuff though okay? ;)

So is a post consisting solely of a picture of a jar of fluff a "fluff" post or not?

Absolutely not! Fluff is fairly obvious... and it is when you get psychotic about spreading lets' say dozens and dozens of posts - especially for the 00s I guess. I for one will still do some "skipping" towards the 00s anyway... but no more "LOUD SPRINTS". Lisa is right bout the size of the crowd here ... it is sizable to say the least. And having this size 18 months out is fearsome. I can think back to the early days (2-3 weeks ago) on our thread when I was posting estimates of what we had to generate to achieve 100,000 posting before embarkation... and now I'd say it's likely we could break 100,000 before 2008! I would NEVER have thought we'd accumulate 20,000 in the first 30 days! Shoot - that's with most of us not even being on here in the initial 10-15 days!

So just post as your heart dictates. If anything becomes an "issue" then someone is likely to send a very polite PM... or maybe someone might start joking about 'excesses". No one is likely to be rude or serious.... except maybe Lisa... <chuckles>

So go right on ahead and feel completely free to post the jar... but do NOT post a series of 30 postings containing single letters or numbers... that would be worse than fluff! <chuckles>

Me either. And so I must go off to bed.

But before I leave, I do hope y'all don't mind my 'attempts' at humor. I do not want to offend any of you, if for no other reason than I will stuck in close quarters with you for 15 days, and having been on more cruises then me, you probably know all the good places to hide a body.

OMG!

Are you serious? I know the local McDs was a corporate store - as I used to talk to the manager about franchise stories and such... but they're gonna make them ... UPSCALE? Oh my... I can just SMELL the french fires again... and such a shame - it's almost time for those green Shamrock shakes too... I'm gonna have to drive to get my "green fix" in another month or so.

But when they reopen... it'll be a nice cozy new layout... maybe I can find an image to google...

under chicago Mcdonalds. But getting an image is not life or death... I was just curious and amused as opposed to serious... obviously.

Edited in : I did find a web article on a "new generation" McDs in the Chicago area.... http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_20/b3984065.htm

A comfortable armchair. Cool hanging lights. Funky graphics and photos on the walls. Wi-Fi access. Premium coffee. Isn't Starbucks great? Except...this is McDonald's. McDonald's (MCD )? That's right. After 30 years without a major design overhaul, the 51-year-old fast-food giant is adopting a hip new look. The world's largest hamburger chain is redesigning its 30,000 eateries around the globe in a 21st century makeover of unprecedented scale.
the redesign is risky and has many franchisees up in arms over the high costs of a makeover. But company officials believe the overhaul is needed. McDonald's, whose restaurants are visited by more than 40 million people every day, has moved aggressively over the past three years to revamp its menu and attract a new breed of customer. It has added healthier items like premium salads targeted at women, and apple slices and skim milk for children. But as more upscale items like Asian chicken salad show up on its menu, the chain's typical starkly lit, plastic-heavy look is at odds with the contemporary, welcoming image the company wants to present. "McDonald's promises to be a 'forever young' brand," says John Miologos, vice-president of worldwide architecture, design, and construction at McDonald's Corp. "We have to deliver on that promise." The last major change at McDonald's restaurants was the introduction of play places for children in the early 1980s.

NEW COLORS
What will the new McDonald's look like? "Think iPod: clean lines, simplicity," says Miologos. The signature mansard roof? History. "The big red roof looks too dated today," says John Bricker, creative director at design firm Gensler's brand-strategy arm, Studio 585. It's being replaced by a flat roof topped by a newly designed, contemporary, golden sloping curve. Ronald McDonald appears safe: The mascot was given a leaner, sportier look just last year. And the iconic twin golden arches will still play a big role in the branding.

After conducting a global contest among design firms, the burger giant chose New York-based Lippincott Mercer in the summer of 2004. Peter Dixon, the design firm's creative director, spent 2005 with McDonald's internal architecture and design team testing and prototyping the new look, which is being officially rolled out this year. Lippincott Mercer, which until it signed McDonald's had few clients in the restaurant business, has made a name for itself working with companies going through a shift in brand identity and image. In 2002, for example, it helped redesign Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY ) dealerships to reflect the company's launch of several new upscale cars. Within a year, the redesigned dealerships saw an average of 57% sales growth, vs. 33% overall.

The traditional McDonald's yellow and red colors will remain, but the red will be muted to terra cotta and olive and sage green will be added to the mix. To warm up their look, the restaurants will have less plastic and more brick and wood, with modern hanging lights to produce a softer glow. Contemporary art or framed photographs will hang on the walls. Bob Dixon, a private school fund-raiser in Chicago, says of an Oak Brook (Ill.) restaurant that sports the new design: "It's bright, it's lively, it's clean. It stunned me how beautiful it was."

The dining area will be separated into three sections with distinct personalities. The "linger" zone will offer comfortable armchairs, sofas, and Wi-Fi connections. "The focus is on young adults who want to socialize, hang out, and linger," says Dixon. Brand consultant Robert Passikoff, president of Brand Keys, a brand consulting firm, says that Starbucks has raised the bar: "A level has been set by Starbucks, which offers the experience of relaxed chairs and a clean environment where people feel comfortable hanging out even if it's just over a cup of coffee."

The "grab and go" zone will feature tall counters with bar stools for customers who eat alone; plasma TVs will offer them news and weather reports. And in the "flexible" zone, families will have booths featuring fabric cushions with colorful patterns and flexible seating. The new design allows different music to be targeted to each zone.

RESISTANCE
McDonald's won't confirm the cost of a redesign. Richard Adams, a former franchisee and consultant to current owners, estimates they will have to pay $300,000 to $400,000 to renovate an existing outlet -- an amount roughly equal to a restaurant's annual profit. Tearing down a store and rebuilding from scratch could cost $1 million, Adams says. The franchisees will have to pay for the renovations themselves, which has some of them seething. "Many franchisees are dead set against this change, especially because they already spent millions remodeling their restaurants in the past four years," says Adams. In 2002, when McDonald's introduced premium salads, it did ask a number of franchisees to spruce up their dining rooms, but it wasn't a major redesign project. McDonald's says it worked collaboratively with franchisees to jointly develop a strategy for the current "re-imaging" of its restaurants.

In a recent letter to management at the company's headquarters in Oak Brook, about 160 franchisees from North Carolina spelled out why they oppose the new plan. They say the roof change erases 40 years of brand building and that "there has been no business case presented which justifies the change." Says Frederick Huebner, who owns 11 McDonald's in North Carolina: "We don't want to lose the iconic look of what we've got." If franchisees balk, McDonald's can refuse to renew their contract.

Right now, only 20 recently opened restaurants in the U.S. sport the makeover in its entirety. Another 20, primarily in Tulsa and Columbus, Ohio, have been completely remodeled. All brand-new restaurants will have to hew to the redesign blueprints, and by the end of 2006, more than half of the 13,720 U.S. restaurants will feature some element of the design. Says Gensler's Bricker: "It's something that McDonald's has to do if it wants to be part of the 21st century."

As I recall.... the royalty skim with McDonalds was an EYE POPPING 25% of sales. COmpared to other franchises in the low teens. Plus you have to consider there are contract obligations (like this redesign demand from HQ) and local/national advertising percentages. To say the average franchise rakes in $300-400K annually tells me the ROI is prety lean considering the capital requirements. BUT - it is a virtually guaranteed ROI which may vary upwards under expert management. And - for a generation transfer of wealth with a decent yield I can see the appeal a McD unit might have. Oh well... my conversation is drifting towards being thick FLUFF....

Okay cool with the no tackling. He's had an injured knee in the past and we wouldn't want him crippled the rest of the cruise.
He says he's all for it. Doesn't know a thing about rugby but he said he thought it would be fun to learn. :)

Great, so I'll keep him penciled in. I'll keep everyone up to date as we get closer to cruise time.:)
