If I remember correctly from the 2005 cruise - I believe the magic paid approx $200K to cross the canal.

PC COSTS reading the DCL book from 2005 the record toll was 2003 cruise ship Coral princess $217,513.75 lowest toll in 1928 .36 cents that was a swimmer.

My wife is very upset after hearing what you paid for your cat 4. She thinks we over paid.
I have heard of $15K booking for a Cat4. :scared: The cruise is essentialy Sold Out and you have a good rate for 5:thumbsup2 Its a 15 day cruise you are paying less than $850 per day or $170 a day per person which includes all your chow!:teacher: Sounds good to me!

They probably got in on tier 1 pricing from being on a TA or being lucky enough to get thru to DCL before the pricing started going up. I was looking online and 5 minutes before I was able to book on the phone, the price for our room went up $800. :(

Our price if I remember correctly as DW handles all the money was 11,400. for 2 adults and 2 children ages 8/11. This was done through All seasons travel in florida.

I hope it's not tier 2 :scared1: We booked online at 5:20am for the exact configuration CAT 4 2A 3K 15,15 & 12 and got the same quote as UVAWahoo. I thought we did good

It probably is not tier one then. That is 8:20 am ET and people were starting to book at 8 am. Most of the tier one room prices went to those on the waiting list with IC before the phone/site opened. I booked at 9:10 am ET and am probably tier 5 or 6. Cat 8 2A2K no ins or transfers went up quickly.
8 am 7912.96
9:10 am 8684.96
10:30 am 9112.96
11:30 am 9512.96

At 12:30 a 10 was 8812.

So... what do you suppose DCL is paying for our ride through the Panama Canal? If a tanker is $180,000... then what would the Magic cost... $150,000... or $200,000? And what if you had a little motor boat - or yacht? DO they charge based on tonnage or on a percentage of revenue the ship is running - if a commercial ship?

OK... enuf for goofing around... I gotta turn away for a bit... I'll be back...:thumbsup2

I think it is based on size - length/gross tonnage. I know DH had to wait a few days when he took the cocaine boat* through. They also went through with several other boats. I think there were 5-6 of them in each lock at the same time. As for what it costs, I have no idea, that was our tax dollars at work.

*For those who weren't around 800 or so pages ago, don't get any strange ideas - DH worked counternarcotics for the Coast Guard. His last canal transit was as the Captain of a fishing boat they busted off Centra America with 2.5 tons of cocaine hidden in it. We are not, repeat NOT paying for this cruise with drug sale money!

Your right, I will eplain it to her that way. I'm sure she'll understand. I'm sure she'll forget about this as soon as she hears the DM horn in LA.

If you're talking Napa Valley wine country, that's clear on the other end of the state, either an 8-9 hour drive or 1 1/2 hour flight. You could do some of the Santa Barbara wineries, only about a 2 hour drive or so. Just an FYI - traveling to opposite ends of our state is very unlike the eastern side of the country. We drive for 10 hours and are still in CA. Back your way, you drive 10 hours and you've crossed 3 states!

You could also try the Temecula wineries
http://www.temeculawines.org/
http://www.sandiegan.com/temeculawineries.html

I personally like Mount Palomar, Falkner and Rancho de Andallusia from Temecula.

Firstly the DM would have paid a bit more for a guaranteed slot both ways booking well in advance, I read they charge by the effective floor space on the ship, ie inc all decks etc and it has a set price, ships can wait a long time outside you will see them wating, also at each lock, but they pay different levels if speed isnt an issue.

Interesting... so our passage is on the pricey side... and that makes a lot of sense.

Imagine - what a racket - having a toll booth between continents for merchant ships. No wonder the thing generates something like 20% of the countrys' GNP... but even so it is eclipsed by the revenue generated by the suez canal. Of course, the Suez can handel enormous post - panamax sized ships like super tankers. SO they naturally have higher volume and revenue. The Panamanians recently voted to begin construction on a new set of larger locks and canals to handle bigger ships and increase traffic capacity. Wonder why, eh?

Now I gotta slip away for a bit - fer sure...

Anyone know what L5R is? If so then PM Me....

Our booking took place in the afternoon, so that would explain the exponential price growth.

Things are totally different on the meets threads. Here we can chat, joke, and plan while getting to know each other before the cruise. Mark & Mary are not going on this cruise. I think they are doing an Eastern in April?

Don't worry, I'll let you guys know if you need to tone things down.

Lisa, I was just commenting that on some other threads I have been on there were people “Racing” to get their post counts up, and for the “00” posts. This was at a time when the boards were having problems, so the Ober-Webmaster set forth in words to his minions to disseminate the realities of the negatives associated with posting faster than one can read whereby the post consists of 1 smiley (:bored:)
IOW we had a CB board thread with 4 people on it that managed to post faster than the group here, and it was mindless like the “Run’s for the 00”

Now...

... I acknowledge you admit to LIKING "needless posting"... but I am wondering about this thing where a moderator "frowns" on it? I thought this area was for less defined conversation... as opposed to the threads where a specific purpose is declared.

I.E., if the topic of the thread is to say... post what cabin catagory you got off a guarantee res .... or which dining venue you preferred on the ship ... well... the topic is gonna be directed and relatively narrow in nature.

However, this is a cruise meet thread. That's pretty undefined if you ask me. All it takes to qualify a contribution is the reservation or intent to sail with us. Beyond that - its' a get to know thing? Right?

As such.... I am sympathetic to those unable to read one days' worth of postings in less than a day of reading! I count myself in that camp - being entirely unable to keep up! I remember last week reading stright through and noting that I was getting no closer to the END of the thread! IE... postings were being made FASTER than I could read! Thats' pretty outrageous... and entertaining at t he notion of so much EXCITEMENT going on with our voyage!

But I think - short of rude or inconsiderate behavior - all comments should be welcome! Folks generally should feel welcome to get to know others in what-ever manner they choose. I don't think there was a sticky defining a handful of narrow exercises for cruise meet conduct. Rather, we do have a penalty system in place for handling TOS violations, conduct abuses and inconsiderate conduct in general. Which I applaud as an overdue mechanism for maintaining some sense of civility here.

I hope I did not come across as a loose cannon. I imagine some might consider my contributions as superficial or silly... but this is how I like to contribute to the conversation. I enjoy humor - and it's not easy finding an image that has any connection with what I want after having read someones' posting. So - for me the hunt for an image is half the fun!

At any rate... there it is.

Cheers!

No problem, but I have been known to skip 10 pages at a time because I dowork for a living and cannot afford to spend all of my waking hours DIS’ing

Let me guess...

Mark and Mary have a reputation for spreading it fast and furious on a thread all by them-selves? Right? Or something that approximates this sort of conduct??

Mark is on the right... and the other Mark is on the left? Right?

I really like Mark&Mary, I was hoping they would be on the cruise; I also wonder who will make the buttons???

If DCL did overbook, which I think they may have, I imagine they're expecting cancellations. I imagine there will be and it'll workout w/18 months until sailing. But, if it was overbooked, wonder what it'd take in terms of an offer from DCL to get some one to voluntarily bump? For me, I don't think even a free back to back Eastern/Western Caribbean would do it. Not the same. We're doing the EB Canal due to kids missing no school days, but if they said something like, "If you switch to the WB Panama, we'll give you a free stateroom, plus a 2 Cat upgrade, pick up your tips and give you $1,000 OBC", I'd probably miss you guys a lot come August.
I talked to both MS, and DCL Both admitted DELIBERATE OVERBOOKING. On my last call to MS said they informed me that the points and the costs were NOT in the tiered pricing, They indicated DVC gets discount pricing. I recall being in NYC more than once and having a limo offering me a “Special Rate” 30% more than their regular rate….

:figment:

PS, Happy Birthday Geffric

Have to take my cheese cake out of the oven, be back in a jiffy.

Got a question for those of you that are experts at this stuff and know what a good rate is versus a bad rate. Sorry for the subjective question as I am pretty new to cruise vacations in general.

Is $12,806.20 (No transfers, no insurance) an okay price for a Cat 4 (2A, 3K) on the 2008 EB Repo Curise?

Thanks!

Not sure if it is or isn't beacuse we don't know the ages of your kids
We paid 9672.86 for 2 adults, 2 kids age 13 & 11 in a cat 4

Fascinating...

I would not want to swim it though.... especially since I cannot swim.

Cheers...:lmao:

I gotta go now...

grrrrr

We were lucky enough to book online (3A, 1K age 3) and our cat 4 is $10,937. But I do remember that even in the middle of the fray (trying to call in, waiting for the

router to reboot) that price stayed even when I had to restart the booking process.

I really like Temecula - especialy if you don't want to treck to Napa. The Callaway Vineyard is nice.

We stayed in a great B&B there about 10 years ago. I'll try to dig up the name when I'm at home.

I've been to Calloyway Vinyard - a long time ago. I think this is it - though I don't quite remember it this way ... as my visit was a long time ago...
