Anyway I don't usually share things like this but.... We had a little bit of a scare today. This morning we were doing some last minute things for a get together at our house and my Dad collapsed to the floor. Passed out, he is diabetic. We took him to the emergency room and after 6 hours of tests of all sorts, it seems that he took too much insulin which dropped his blood sugar dramatically. He's a little sore from the fall, but other than that okay, Thank God. He's been diabetic since 1984 and on insulin since 2000 and this is the first time something like this has happened.
Something good did come from this, he had all those tests that he had been reluctant to do before.

I am glad your Dad is okay!!!!:thumbsup2 I would be scared too!!!

GM pirate: Presently 78 going up to 94 here in Sunny Central Florida..
Have a great Sunday

I sure missed your weather reports while you were gone!!!!!:flower3:

Magic parked at Cabo (well not really) just looks that way. We will have to take tenders in to Cabo.
P7210021.jpg

Here is one of the tenders.

P7210022.jpg

I would prefer a much larger boat to take me to shore.

How long a wait to get tendered:

In an ideal situation (these are incremental times - 550 per load):

0 mins for the first 550
20 mins for the last 2150 (i.e 2150 folks will have at least a 20 min wait)
40 mins for the last 1600 (i.e 1600 folks will have at least a 40 min wait)
60 mins for the last 1050 (i.e 1050 folks will have at least a 1hr wait)
80 mins for the last 500 (the last folks to leave will have been waiting 1hr 20 mins)

Andy

I would not know if you are right or you made a mistake.:confused3 I will just take your word for it.:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Andrew if they have all 10 boats in service (probably not) that would be 550 passengers for one cycle of boats. That would mean 5 sets of all 10 boats loaded to the max to accommodate 2700 passengers. It would be one hour total, but they can not load all 10 boats at the same time (only 2 at a time). I would say they could get 1000 people off in a little over an hour if everything went smooth.

From the Cabo Tender website they do not service Princess. They may have a contract with another tender service.

Thanks for all the pictures Roger!!! Still a little afraid on little boats in all that water.;)

:yay:
....i may be imagineering "ideas" ..but i have this distinct feeling,
putting micmse.. & just m...together.....is going to cause
the.....pixiedust: to fall.

did everyone..."see"....andrew's pictures tour...:thumbsup2 however,

nor was it missed..no wenches noticed my bones a missing , not that
there were anything wrong with the swabbies neglecting me, but
for all the pretty wenches..sorta made me ...a :sad1: teddy bear....

Hey Lil Grumpy, Pixie Dust pixiedust: follows me everywhere!!! I just blink my eyes and magic is everywhere I look!!!:cloud9:

Andrew is just tempting me with all them yummy looking deserts.:sad2: How can a girl stay on a diet?:confused3

We noticed you were gone for awhile!!! just being curious:rolleyes1 but glad you are back.:yay:

Thanks for posting these. I was wondering how you got from the ship into the tenders.:scared1:
I invisioned a little ladder made out of rope to climb down into a tender. I would prefer I big boat!!! Maybe if I take enough drugs, being tendered will not bother me.

Roger, don't you think you and my DH bear a resemblance to eachother? You could be long lost brothers...or cousins..... He does have some distant cousins somewhere in California. We've never met them. :confused3
Stacey I totally agree. When I first saw the picture if felt like Lindsey Lohan in the Parent Trap. I don't have a lot of pictures of me since I am the one taking most of them. But here is a side by side comparison.

My Mom had her hip replacement surgery in January, and that June was when we did the Mexican Riviera. She was still using a cane, and sometimes a wheelchair (when she was really worn out). For the life of me, I don't remember getting her down those stairs to the tender.
She must have done okay on them! :thumbsup2

I should post a picture with his glasses on...they're just like yours.
Wow.
Maybe you're the distant cousin we've never met!

My dad's family is kind of sketchy. They came out from Tennessee in the mid-30's. We really don't have any relatives that I know on that side of the family.

here's one with his glasses on. I cut my chubby self out of the picture. Only difference, he didn't have his beard then. We were on a Princess cruise.

I think most of his family was from Wisconsin via England...but can't be positive.

WOW!!! OMG!!! Are you sure you are not leading a doulbe life with Stace???:lmao: :lmao:

Okay, camera experts. What exactly is the difference between the Nikon D80 and the new D40x?
They have the same megapixels, same zoom capacity (with the added lenses)....all I can see is that the D40x is lighter weight and costs less.

What be a pirate's favorite kind of humour?

Sarrrrrrrcasm!!!

Wow. DIS rumor control...Stace is not, I repeat NOT having an affair with nutmeg.

And of course Arcos Cabo

DS8 looking over my shoulder right now: "Are we going to go through that?" :rotfl2:

Roger, I am SO enjoying our virtual cruise! Please keep it up.

Our last cruise was Eastern itinerary...so we've never tendered before. Is it difficult for kids to board the tenders at all?

We tendered on the Western when the kids were 5 & 7 - no problem at all.

I had better be careful on Deck 7 at night.

DS8 looking over my shoulder right now: "Are we going to go through that?" :rotfl2: I am sure Crash can give us a visual of that.

Roger, I am SO enjoying our virtual cruise! Please keep it up.

I am out of pictures at this point. We only did the abbreviated 6 day cruise back in 2005 and skipped Puerto Vallarta. :sad1: DW and I went to PV in 1994 on Princess, but photos are pre-digital and not sure where they are. I will continue with the virtual cruise but I will need help with photos. I will probably pirate: some to fill in.

I compared the D40X to the D80 the other day and they told me something about the lenses. D80 could accept any lenses but the D40X could only accept a few and they were specific to that camera. I may have it slightly wrong but that was the jest of it.
If that was correct, it sure might be worth it to upgrade to the D80 if you have existing lenses.

It's only 300 postings to the 72,000th entry. Anyone up for a friendly sprint?

Tom31s' reference to DP review is my usual favorite source for info - plus I refer to a few others who are nearly as insightful. As such - I must simply say I am impressed how far Nikon has come along in many ways with thier DSLR bodies. Especially considering the street prices.

As such - I found the DP review summary to be useful - quoted here:

  • [*]Conclusion - Pros
[*]Resolution and sharpness on par with the best of the current ten megapixel bunch
[*]A demonstrable resolution gain at lower sensitivities, less obvious at ISO 800 and 1600
[*]Surprisingly good build quality, tight shut lines
[*]Very compact and lightweight (especially with kit lens) yet still comfortable to use
[*]Kit lens is better quality than many others
[*]Great in-use performance, very responsive, short black-out time, very fast media write
[*]Good fast auto focus system (only 3 areas but that's not a big issue for this camera)
[*]Auto-focus assist lamp rather than requiring flash to be raised
[*]Reliable, sophisticated, if sometimes a little conservative matrix metering system
[*]For a Pentamirror the viewfinder delivers a surprisingly bright image
[*]Extremely useful, customizable automatic sensitivity (ISO)
[*]Easy to use playback / delete combination
[*]All playback functions available in record review
[*]Very attractive and intuitive menu system
[*]Unlimited 3 fps continuous shooting in JPEG mode (with a reasonably fast card)
[*]Good SD card throughput and USB 2.0 transfer speed
[*]In-camera retouching features including D-Lighting and Red-eye reduction
[*]Support for SD and SDHC cards
[*]Good large LCD monitor with wide viewing angles
[*]Dedicated help button provides both shooting and in-menu assistance
    [*]Programmable Fn hard button
    [*]Value for money

  • Conclusion - Cons
  • No lens motor in body means non-AF-S/AF-I lenses are manual focus only
  • Disappointingly RAW+JPEG setting only records Basic quality JPEG's
  • No status LCD panel on top of camera (we hate to see these go)
  • No exposure or white balance bracketing
  • No hard buttons (without customizing) for ISO or White Balance
  • No depth-of-field preview
  • Occasional visibility of moire artifacts (although seldom)
  • Fixed exposure steps (1/3 EV)
  • Disappointing automatic white balance performance in incandescent light
  • No RAW adjustment with supplied PictureProject, only simple conversion
  • Limited image parameter adjustment (especially for color saturation)

Overall conclusion
No one was more surprised that me when Nikon passed through the press releases for the D40X. Just under four months since the arrival of the six megapixel D40 and Nikon were about to reveal a ten megapixel version of the same (save for a base ISO 100 sensitivity and 3.0 fps shooting speed) camera.

That it only took four months for the D40 to leap from six to ten megapixels begs the simple question: why Nikon didn't just release the D40X in the first instance? Was the ten megapixel sensor not ready in time? Did they have stock of the 'old' six megapixel sensor laying around? We will probably never know.

One thing however, is certain: the new model is positioned to go head-to-head against the most dominant digital SLR on the market, Canon's EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi). On paper it measures up well, missing out only with its lack of a physical dust reduction mechanism, no vertical hand grip option and limited image parameter adjustment. Additionally, as with the D40, die-hard Nikon owners may be disappointed with the lack of a focus motor in the body, meaning that many non-AF-S/AF-I lenses will not auto focus (including some Nikon's best prime lenses).

Other shortcomings which I also counted against the D40 include the fact that when I shot RAW+JPEG I was only getting Basic quality JPEG's. I also didn't like that there wasn't a dedicated ISO or WB button on the camera (yes, you can program the Fn button but I would have thought it more logical to use the four-way controller on the rear from day one), and as with most recent digital SLRs automatic white balance was something you should really only use in natural light. Other things which will be of less importance to D40 owners are the lack of bracketing, depth-of-field preview and fixed exposure steps.

Everything positive we said about the usage and performance of the D40 obviously remains true of the D40X; instant on times, instant response, good auto focus and a punchy feel to the shutter release which encourages you to take more pictures. With its compact body not compromising comfort or ergonomics in any way the D40X is perhaps one of the easiest 'carry around' digital SLRs; it that won't break your back or leave you with an aching neck.

Handling aside, everything else that I said about the D40 remains true with the D40X. Good image processing ekes about as much detail out of the image as heavier RAW conversion can, although the limits of the smaller photosites become clear at higher sensitivities, and good dynamic range means softer roll-offs in highlights - and more likelihood of getting a nice blue sky in a landscape shot.

So in conclusion, the D40X really is just as good as the D40, with the added benefit of a little bit more resolution and slightly faster continuous shooting. But is it enough to take the pole position as the ultimate compact ten megapixel DSLR? That's harder to say, image quality-wise it's a dead heat with the EOS 400D (except at high sensitivities); it's quicker and more comfortable to use, but very slightly less featured, especially if you consider lens compatibility. It would be hard to recommend one over the other and the answer would depend solely on your preferences (I'm calling it a draw).

Personally, I would have preferred the feature set of the D80... but I could live with the reduced set and capabilities of the D40x or D40 !!! Consider, I have been tooling around with an old 6MP Canon 10D for some time now.

Again - if ya like it - just get it. If ya don't see the need - and I seriously question the need for anything greater then 6MP in sensor size - then why get it?

In my case the street consensus thinks Canon will anounce the details of its' 30D replacement on TUESDAY. I'm gonna be traveling Monday and half of tuesday - so I may not pick up the news til tuesday evening. AND... the things I am most interested in hearing about are the #1) PRICE, #2) if it is weather sealed, #3) whether it is still a 1.6 APS-C sized sensor, #4) the auctuation life span on the shutter assembly and #5) the price. I think Canon should try cutting thier price to be more competitive - however, they may just remain stiff on holding a $1400 price point.

At any rate - either way (step up - or make no changes) you will have great fun and capture countless precious moments.

Above is the D40x without the gear spur protruding to focus the older Nikon lenses. And below is the D80 with the "x" shaped gear spur for handling the older auto focusing Nikon lenses.

lensmount-d80.jpg

And on another note - I guess we won't have any mad dashes to 72,000 tonite. Which was expected. <chuckles> OK... since I may not be around much the next couple of days - its' up to all you swabbies out there to hold up our "honor" against the wenches. And yeah, I know... those ladies can be pretty formidible ... but I think we can prevail! I should have some opportunities to be on line in the next couple of days but it is expected to be pretty limited. C'mon guys - lets rally on this one! :thumbsup2

Having said that I'd like to place a 1,000 peso bet on the wenches to win the 72,000th posting. < chuckles >

Wow. DIS rumor control...Stace is not, I repeat NOT having an affair with nutmeg.

.

I am steering clear of this one - except to say there are remarkable similarities here in appearance. And then I'm sure in side by side real life comparisons we would have greater differences. I think it safe to say that I have no similar appearing pseudo twin to myself on this sailing. <chuckles>
