We've always had a "baby sitter" come to the house for our dogs when we go on vacation. I wish you were closer to Baltimore! :thumbsup2

I would be glad to do it. I even go to Charleston, SC to take care of my former boss who retired down their. When he retired from the hospital back home as Chief of Staff of OB-GYN, I was his assistant i retired too. They were to retire here in Williamsburg but preferred Charleston. I plan on moving down their within the next year.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone again for the encouragement when I was wrestling with the decision on taking my mom or my misbehaving son on my Med trip. I made the decsion to take my mom and it is even more reinforced now. She called me tonight to say she decided to go and what was holding her back was worry about my son. She felt like she should stay home to help take care of him and I should go with a friend. See, that's what motherhood is all about. I love my mom and now I am so glad I get to do this for her. I have assured her that my son will be fine. The rest of the family will be home to help him out if needed. But I have every confidence in my friend who will be watching him.

I get to take my mom to Europe...:cool1:
Now maybe I'll be able to convince her to keep her ressie on this trip. She's booked but we forgot that next year is our family reunion. And next year is our turn to plan it all. But once she experiences a Disney cruise, she may get hooked. She's already been on 8 cruises, just no DCL.

I am so glad your mother is going with you. It surely will be a TOAL for both of you!!!

Thanks sooo much for joining us. What would a meet be like without our weather report lady who makes me sooooo jealous when we are freezing here!! I sent a pm to you too!!:cool1:

Earl of Sandwich is one of my favorite places to eat. Their grilled chicken ceasar salad is the best!!!

Karen

Thanks for the info. I have not tried Earl of Sandwich. I just thought it would be a not too crowed eating place. I :confused3 hope.

I'm glad you were able to make your decision and have your decision reinforced. I hope you and your Mom have a fantastic trip, and that your DS learns the very valuable lesson that you are teaching him. :flower3:

:grouphug: Monica - I know how you wrestled with the decision. I'm so glad that you get to take your Mom and have an amazing experience together.

Did I miss someone calling you a nerd, JR????? Actually, I was thinking the other day of the computer guys called the "Geek Squad" who do those ads about coming to fix your computer -- obviously people really respect the term geek or the company wouldn't use it.

I have found very few true geeks working for the Geek Squad. Many of the folks I work with think of the Squad as a sham of the highest magnitude  After all, if none of them know what ls -l or grep or even a basic pwd means then they don't deserve to wear the badges they carry!

And don't even get me started on Circuit City's Firedog service! :furious:

Great choice, we eat there almost every visit. My DH has worked his way through their entire menu and is now repeating his four favorites. It can be really crowded during busy times. During usual lunch and dinner hours we usually have to wait to get a table inside for two. But, they also have outside areas. They do have two large tables inside (probably seat 10+) which might be perfect. Since the meet is on Labor Day it could be even more crowded. If you can it might be best to schedule your meet for off peak meal hours.

I'm still working on joining you. We are thinking about going down on 9/2 (DH should be off that day) and then I'll stay over. But I have to wait to see how I can work the budget. With the family here for a month this summer we are way over on our WDW budget. But, either way, if I can't make the meet on 9/3, we can try to get together on 9/7.

My parents took my son on an intergenerational elderhostel (again!) and left their 6 month old Gordon Setter with DH & I. On the plus side, he has been "cured" of wanting a dog for a while! :thumbsup2

You know, I would love for my parents to be able to do that with DS. But I gotta say, I don't know that their type of "travel" would be agreeable with DS. As DMom observed--he's got a passport and has been to more countries by age 6 months than she'd been to all her life! I love 'em dearly but clearly they are on "retiree time" (DDas is on it full-time now) when they come see us. Going to Vegas is worse...they just don't realize that DS isn't going to louse around in his pj's until they get going at 2pm!!

My dad would be up for the adventure of an elderhostel but mom...well, she's just not up for adventures any more. A trip to Cairo, Paris, London and Zurich wouldn't interest her--unless it's an international bazaar shopping trip! That might interest her! :rotfl:

We're working them over to come on the cruise with us but they aren't budging from dry land! They don't like the thought of the ship's movement (too much time living in California). We thought about getting them to go on a 3-nighter DCL but they aren't interested.

Perhaps when they realize that I was dead serious about (a) not letting DS spend the summer at their place like when I went to my DGM's house as a kid [it really wasn't that much fun] and (b) most of our family vacations are going to be cruise-based until he's up into the SPT/ST years, then perhaps they'll decide to come along. Oh my, did that sound :snooty: and bratty of me? GOOD! I mean think about it, they buy a house in FL (1031 tax echange) which DDad (burgeoning real estate mogul he is) promptly rented out. Neither plans on living in this house...but they bought it in Lakeland of all places! If you're going to buy a house for rental why not buy in the Orlando/Kissimmee/Celebration area? HELLO? Ever hear of WDW and Universal Studios? I mean if you're out to make a buck, why not be a true pirate: and clean up?
duh.gif
Even if you have to pay the what? 15-20% property management company's fee, you still make the same or more in one week than a month's rent in Lakeland :sad2: Even when they do buy a house to live in, they won't get a pool because mom is afraid the gators will decide to take a dip! :lmao: So that means DS would be stuck at their house, no pool, probably very few to no kids and too far away from WDW for them to want to take him every day. No, rather, dad will probably take him down to the MacDill to nose around the BX or worse, to show him all the planes (or maybe even over to Pensacola for the Navy's flight school) and further press him into going to the Air Force Academy. :sad2:

Nahhhhh my dad--the high school jock who wound up having a son who prefered logarithms over lay-ups--would never do that.... ::yes:: Who am I kidding? He wants us to buy DS a set of golf clubs and a skateboard so he can start practicing and maybe go pro when he's 6!!!

I made ribs last night and they were AWFUL but it was my own fault i didn't follow the recipe that i got from Esteri on Friday night.. .. I am willing to try again but only with a proven recipe. I think I am going to throw out the left over ribs if no one will eat them at dinner tonight. It was funny 'cause Eric was very concerned that I didn't have enough ribs only 1/2 slab for each.... each boy wanted a slab at least and now I have slab and 1/2 left over..LOL they were really BAD.

Oh man - that's really too bad. How did you cook them? Taking it too fast is the easiest way to ruin them - usually the problem isn't the sauce, rub, marinade, or whatever you put on the meat.

Repeat after me: Ribs can not be hurried. Ribs can not be hurried.

Think 250 degrees (F) for hours - OK? (That's like the lowest possible setting on some grills.) On the grill, and with a dry rub (like I gave you in chat) they will tend to be drier. Even on the grill you shoud probably wrap them in foil to help keep the moisture in.

The night we were in chat, DH got them off to a late start - tried to hurry them on the grill (325 degrees) and wound up ruining them. They were mostly edible - but he threw a lot of them out.

If you want a very moist rib - then think about braizing them. Braizing is when you put them on a dutch oven (or crock pot) with liquid and cook them at a low temp for a long time. (this is my personal favorite)

If you need a recipie try this one: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_11125,00.html?rsrc=search

If the link doesn't work - go to foodtv.com, search on Alton Brown Ribs. Nothing from Alton Brown ever fails. (Notice that he recommends braising, though he does it in foil.)

Hope this helps!

I LOVE Alton Brown - have you seen his show on popcorn? Very cool.

Forgive me, but I find this amusing. What a mismatch. Still, you gotta love them for trying. Perhaps in their retirement - they've forgotten what it was like to have kids? (Hey Mom, remember those days of getting up at 6 am to get us all fed?? Grandkids have to eat too! :rotfl: )

As for the Air Force Academy - no one can pressure your kid into going. The officers doing the interviews for potential cadets are very careful to remove the applicant from all parental (grandparental?) influences and have a real heart to heart with the applicant about what they want to do.

DH's reserve duty is as a USAFA Liason Officer - so I know. You'd be surprised at the number of kids who apply because it's expected of them, not because its what they really want to do. DH (or any Liason Officer)has no problem letting the Academy be the bad guy - so the kid can save face with the parents (or grandparents). Well, maybe you wouldn't be surprised.

Speaking of sending kids off to their grandparents. I just got back from the airport where I put DS10 on a plane for Seattle to visit his grandparents (my parents). But they've got 40 acres in the mountains (CleElum WA) and he'll spend the next 3 weeks clearing under brush to reduce fire hazard, chasing critters, going for hikes, hanging out in the wood burning hot tub, and driving the ATV - the perfect boy vacation!

In three weeks we swap kids with them. And DS5 (about to turn 6) will have a week with them at The Woods by himself. It's his first time to have one on one time with his grandparents like this - and he'll get to fly home by himself. He's pretty jazzed about it. I don't think they'll work him as hard as big brother. He might wind up painting, and fetching and carrying.

It's funny though - my parents' idea of retirement is to knock off at lunch time. I sit here and laugh becasue DS10 will have such a different experience with them my brother and I did. We had our noses to the grindstone until dinner!

Most people on that service can't even spell Unix or Linux, so those terms above mean nothing to them.

Missed that one. They changed the times for the show and it's really hard for us to catch. We used to never miss a show - it was the only thing on TV we watched regularly.

My kids know how to debone a chicken. :sad2: And when DS10 was in Kindergarten his teachers expressed concern because he was taking insects apart (mostly cutting up worms). "Uh. We watched a cooking show about deboning chickens this week." Somehow that make it all right. :confused3

pirate: pirate: pirate: pirate:
What size mug of whiskey does a pirate order?
pirate: pirate: pirate: pirate:
LaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
pirate: pirate: pirate: pirate:

Whiskey!! Whiskey is for wimps. A real Pirate would order RUM!!

It's amazing what kids latch on to. We had a problem with DD lifting up her skirts at pre-school - until we realized that one of her friends (whose Mom is a dancer) showed her how to do the Can-can. :rotfl:
