Failing air
Baltimore/Washington metro area among 10 worst regions for pollution
Originally published May 02, 2008

The Baltimore/Washington metro area made two top 10 lists this week, and the findings might make you want to hold your breath.
The region ranked ninth in the nation for most ozone pollution and 10th for most short-term particle pollution in the American Lung Association's annual State of the Air report.

Though the region has improved its air quality nearly fourfold over the past 10 years, recording an average of 11 high-ozone days per year in the last three years compared to 41 in 1998, the area still received an overall F grade. Failing grades are given to cities that record nine or more high-ozone days, including at least one at an extremely elevated level.

Both ozone, an invisible gas that forms when sunlight reacts with greenhouse gases such as car exhaust, and particle pollution can cause a variety of respiratory illnesses and even death, especially among high-risk groups, including asthmatics and those with emphysema or cardiovascular disease.

Frederick County is home to nearly 20,000 asthmatics and more than 75,000 people at high risk for developing pollution-related respiratory illnesses, according to the report's website. (WAY TO GO FREDNECK!!!!!!!!)
The county itself fared a bit better than the overall region, recording only six high-ozone days last year and garnering anoverall C grade.
Because of the time required to collect data for the study, this year's report is based on the EPA's 1997 standard for ozone levels instead of the new, stricter standard announced March 12. Considering the new standards, officials believe the air pollution outlook is even worse than the report shows.

California cities occupied nearly half the spots on the three lists, but for the first time ever, a city outside the Golden State has reached number one.

Pittsburgh was ranked first in short-term particle pollution, a combination of ash, soot, diesel exhaust, chemicals, metals and aerosols. The city ranks second behind Los Angeles in most year-round particle pollution.

Interesting heated thread over on the main board about hammock hogs
So what does everyone here think about this situation. Personally the hammock never really appealed to me as I don't find it that comfortable.

Had one and yes it is nice, but wouldn't get into an argument about it. I had to place a towel over it as the rope was rough on bare skin. Remember many threads about this and the reserving of lounge chairs at the pool for invisible guests. :lmao:

I am off to make my FINAL PAYMENT :dance3:

The case the OP cites i find disgusting.... If i was the original woman i would have said have fun to the little kids but i'll be back at "x" time to use it if that's ok.

I know we usually stake out an umbrella and get two lounge chairs and snag two of those little "sit by the water" chairs...

i guess i'm a little "sit by the water" chair hog.....

However, on the flip side...we usually rent a float or two... When we tire of them i usually will give it to whatever kids in the area want it.

This is pretty typical of what it looks like in the LA basin most of the year. That is why we live outside (north) of this. Not to say we don't get smog, just less than living in this all of the time.

We're on SW too! Hopefully they won't add a charge for the second piece of luggage. On our first cruise, there were seven of us and the amount of luggage was embarassing. Here's a picture of it at Orlando International BEFORE the cruise!!

:scared1:
Well, hopefully we won't have that much luggage! We're renting a van in PC to get us to WDW so we have to be really careful that we can fit all 6 of us plus all of our luggage in the van. I figure we're going to wind up doing laundry at least 3 or 4 times over the 3 week period that we're gone.

I am pretty excited.

I have purchased my camera for the EB cruise.

It is a Nikon D40.

Here are a couple of samples as I have been playing with its features including its zoom.

Far, then zoom:

I'm not doing shots of silicone anything !!

Seriously, if I'm going to put silicone in my body, it isn't going to be in my mouth. :)

Good news! Sarah did indeed make the team again. :cheer2: :cheer2: In fact, she was the first one called when they announced the team. So she was really really happy. The tryouts lasted about 2.5 hours longer than we expected so it was a long night and she was pretty nervous. She is really excited about the new coach and her new team. It was fun bringing the girls home as they were so relieved and excited!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

YAY SARAH!

So for those of you scoring at home:

Reasons to Leave DC: 87,496 + 1 = 87,497
Reasons to Stay in DC = 0

DS8 will just love this.....

I gave him this as a summer camp brochure on 1 April

He wanted to sign up and thought it would be great....:headache:

When we were teasing DS11 at dinner with this idea, he volunteered that he knew how to run the institutional dishwashers, and could lead a crew with that. :rotfl2: He wasn't all that happy with all the laughter is set off... "Well, I can!"

Not a lobster fan either...... save room for me

I think we can elbow a few around to make room. Say, if everyone is in the shunned section of the ship - who'd left to do the shunning??

On the book subject again - not that this will help our book sharing -
Anyone have or used the Amazon Kindle or Sony reader or even ebooks that you can download to your laptop?

I get them from our local library website (21 day checkout), or eReader.com. Put them on my smartphone. It's my favorite way to read. I can carry around a virtual library on that little thing. :goodvibes

Speaking of reading, I've recently picked up The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness by Stephen Covey. Reading it for work - and since they bought it - it's hard copy. Anyway, I'm four chapters in, and I can tell already this is going to be an important and transformation read. Not just for work - but especially, and most importantly, as a parent.

I'm planning on bringing it along on the cruise. Would love to get together with any other interested folks to discuss.

Here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/8th-Habit-Eff...UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1209739104&sr=8-13

Oh and Crash - when I read for fun it tends to be Sci-Fi / Fantasy, we we'll have something to share (provided it's not on my phone!) :rotfl:

Not personally, but sat next to a guy on a plane to Seattle two weeks ago who had one. His wife had bought it for him as a gift. He said he really liked it but it was bigger and heavier than he thought it would be -- more like a carrying a hardback book around, he said. Battery life was good and he liked the ability to index and annotate his reading material and look up words. He said battery life was really good. He could fly to Seattle and back and not have to charge it.

One downside, though -- he couldn't read during taxi, takeoff and landing because the stewardesses make him turn it off as it is an electronic device. Limits its usefulness on a plane.

Wow....that looks horrible. Not quite as bad as LA, but here's a couple of pictures of Denver's brown cloud....I'm downtown everyday and can't say I really notice it. The sky looks bright blue to me...

Don't forget that you can squeeze that luggage onto laps! :thumbsup2 The picture of our luggage from 2005 included my parents who joined us for the trip so we had four adults and 3 kids. That said, it was still too much! It was our first cruise and we learned what we don't "need"! On our second cruise, we were able to cut back by about 3 suitcases for the five of us!! (7 instead of 10 including carry-ons) My only concern with the TOAL is that my DW wants to minimize laundry days!:scared1: :scared1:

Hang in there. I used to do in home daycare and sometimes it gets pretty tough.

Welcome to Denver!! Yesterday was 82 degress and today it snows! Although it didn't snow that bad today--just a lot of flurries. It only stuck on roofs and cars (and I guess planes!).

Airports use any reason they can to delay flights, particularly weather.

My wife and I always send e-mails to each other when one of us is delayed with the phrase:

Flight delayed due to (spins Wheel of Delay... ...) [wind in Chicago/snow in Alaska/rain in Seattle/sunshine in Orlando...]

The luggage from this trip or the luggage BA has touring the world?

I was eventually reunited with my luggage three weeks after I left it in the capable hands of British Airways and their trained monk[^H^H^H] baggage handlers. I am in possession of one-half of my reimbursement (well, in possession of MY reimbursement, but waiting on my wife's check to arrive...)

:scared1:
Well, hopefully we won't have that much luggage!

That pic kinda reminds me of a two week FL trip/cruise i did as a ST with my DM,DSF, DGM, DSGM, & DSIS ...We had at least 20 suitcases that time.

Even now it's kinda funny watching our family of three going through the airport. I tend to hook all the "wheeled" luggage together and haul it behind..

It's kinda like a mule train or something....

So for now while the going is good we're embracing it - and I have no qualms at encouraging anyone and everyone to do likewise. And while you're at it - try to be more patient and kinder to all around you. In the final analysis YOU are the primary beneficiary of "cooling your jets" sooner than later.

At any rate I'm rambling... this make any sense to anyone?

Yes Crash, it makes a lot of sense. I am in the midst of attempting to make a career change ... field will stay the same, "scenery" needs to change. We are also selling our house and looking for a new one. I had a conversation with someone today and they said, "Why a job change now." My response, "Because it's time." Then they asked, "Why sell your house NOW?" I said, "Because it's time." I can't give any more substantial answers than that, I can't make anyone else understand what's in my "gut". I was also asked what a deal-breaker would be for me accepting a new position ... I said, "not getting the time off for TOAL". :)

So, I too encourage others to do what's "right" for them and phooey on anyone that doesn't understand the "why now".
