I did too. Raw cookie dough and cake mix as well (remember licking the pot?). I don't recall ever getting sick.
I wonder what has changed?
1. Were our immune systems tougher (back before everything was anti-bacterial we may have been exposed to more stuff and thus better able to fight off bugs).
2. Was contamination less of a problem? Certainly there's a lot more antibiotic resistant stuff now, but was food generally cleaner back then?
3. Are we just being paranoid? We get all freaked out over a dozen cases in a country of 300 million. Perhaps the odds of getting sick really are similar to winning the lottery, and it was just as dangerous then as it is now, except now we're just more frightened and risk averse than people were then?
Probably a bit of all three, but I wonder which are the greater factors?
I know what you mean...we always licked the bowl after mom made a cake...DH eats his meat "as rare as humanly possible" that's how he orders it..and has never gotten sick (makes me feel icky but that's different)
We ate the potato salad at the picnic that was out for hours ..
