8/17/08 Captain Jack's Repossession Repo Cruise to PC thru TPC #10

I'm enjoying it. Just finished the first chapter of the American part.

I need to finish it so I can get to 100 Years of Solitude.
So far my reading list for TOAL includes:
The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Now I need to get the Walt Disney book Coral mentioned.
DH & I are going to share the new Jimmy Buffet book just for fluff.
Oh and I may re-read Old Man and the Sea
I'm still looking for a good pirate book.

I may be disappointed in Chabon's book - his The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is really good. Huck Finn, Catcher in the Rye really good.

A reference to it in the Canal book reminded me - if you live travelogue-type books, Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum is great. He was the first person to sail around the world solo. The man had a very dry sense of humor.

I had to put Path Between the Seas down. The print is so small it was hurting my eyes. So now I am reading the Barbara Walters biography. Interesting, nice easy read and bigger print . I may have to bring Path Between the Seas with me...although I am looking for some light reading on the ship. Any suggestions?

I guess it depends on what you are into. I don't like really fluffy books, I need substance, although I don't always read fine literature.

Here are a few that I realy liked that had something to them, but I didn't have to think real hard while reading.

Last cruise I read Gregory Maguire's books - Wicked (Wizard of Oz), Mirror Mirror (Snow White) & Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (Cinderella). Seemed appropriate for DCL. I wish he'd take on Sleeping Beauty.

I read The Last Time They Met by Anita Shreve last summer and I'm still thinking about the ending!

Little Children by Tom Perrotta is also very good, although maybe too dark for cruise reading. There is a scene where the main female character is trying on swimsuits and I swear the author walked around in my head for a while before writing it.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory was good in a fluffy sort of way, but I didn't really like the rest of her books.

I read the Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and thought it to be slow and sometimes put me to sleep! It was interesting though, just not a page turner.... I have Wicked in the closet that I haven't gotten to yet.

Yeah, that was one of the rumors. I've also heard DNK is on the backburner now. Besides frrom what I hear, the AC @ DNK iwuld be like a check-in area for DNK. I'm not going to pay $200-300 just to sit around a new AC for a short while then trapse around through the Savanah in the pitch black. DNK sounds like a great idea and one I'd probably do once, but I don't see how the AC would fit in for my tastes. I go there to drink and unwind.... not a good idea if you're going to have a face to face with a lion or tiger or bear. Oh my.

What is DNK?

I like Janet Evanovich but I LOVE Jodi Piccoult - if you have never read anything written by her, I recommend My Sister's Keeper first then read 19 Minutes and Vanishing Acts - awesome summer reads, books you will not be able to put down.

The patch made both Linda's and my vision go blurry. I have some other stuff going on right now, and probably won't be able to use the patch during our cruise, which is why I'll be giving the ginger capsules a try.

Can't say I have ever tried the motion drugs, but I have tried the ginger capsules. Honestly, they just made the sea sickness WORSE (if that were possible). On our 2nd cruise (didn't bother me at ALL on the 1st cruise), I was in the cabin seasick for the first 3 days of the cruise!! I was miserable. And the ginger pills just made everything taste like ginger (have you ever burbed ginger . .yikes!!!)

The solutions for me . .SEA BANDS! They are a bit tacky with a formal dress but the wrist bands that put pressure on that special balancing point on your wrist sure made the difference for me. I enjoyed the rest of our second cruise and had a GREAT time on the third cruise. I already have them ready to go for the TOAL!!

Where do you find these gems? They had them at Mickey's Ketch, but you can also find them at Walgreens or any drugstore chain.

After you read Wicked, you have to read Son of a Witch. It picks up where Wicked left off. I found Wicked a little hard to get into at first, but it picked up pretty good!

Man do I need to stop reading this thread and start reading more books... I am currently in the middle of "Food Chaining" to try to learn how to get DD18mo to eat... Also reading a Shannara book by Terry Brooks. Love his stories!

well my wife and i got our 1200 dollars stimulous check yesterday. it will come in handy got a lot of entertainment costs coming up. of course this cruise where all the little things adds up to big $$$. the rebooking on board.
two days later we will be able to book oasis. than by nov 2 i will have to get my rccl cruise paid off for jan cruise. always something

I am waiting for my Mom to finish Fearless Fourteen. We take turns buying all the Evanovich books. I've heard it is not as good as some of the others (not enough Ranger), but still a good read. I know I will have it read before the TOAL. I love Grandma Mazur.

I bought Wicked and put it away to read later and now I can't find it. I think it was next to the pile I donated to Goodwill and got mixed in. Oh well, I will have to buy another copy.

I haven't heard of this author. Are they mysteries? I love something fast paced for reading on the plane, at the beach or near the pool. I have the latest Stuart Woods and James Patterson books to start on, but I hate to bring hard backs with me - too bulky and heavy. Maybe I can check Half Price books.
