Since our honeymoon cruise was officially cancelled yesterday (our wedding has been postponed as well) we are looking at sailing in September in the EC. What are your favorite excursions and ports? Also, I’m a little worried about sailing during hurricane season. How does insurance work with this and do you recommend it?

Except in rare instances, we always get insurance. Primarily for the medial/evacuation coverage. Not so much for trip interruption/cancellation.

You can google "trip insurance comparison sites" and use one of them to compare policies across different companies.

Not really. You really need to commit shortly after booking.
Disney insurance can be added any time prior to PIF. Other insurance has varying timeframes, but many require you to purchase within a couple of weeks of when you book the cruise and pay your deposit.
Most 3rd party insurance can be bought at any time. Many have a requirement, if you're looking to include pre-existing medical conditions, that they must be bought with in a short time frame after initial deposit (generally 2 weeks).

You can still buy coverage after that time, but it won't cover pre-existing health conditions.

What would someone budget for insurance coverage for a 7-nighter during hurricane season? I got a quote from Disney for about $500 between the two of us and I wondered if that was a decent price.

Typically, you'll find better (more) coverage at a lower cost through a 3rd party provider than purchasing cruise line insurance.

If a hurricane develops while you're on the cruise, just be prepared for itinerary changes. Depending on what the storm is doing, the ports may be changed or cancelled. There's also a smaller chance the cruise might be shortened/extended by a day or two.

But it is rare that a cruise will cancel entirely. The cruise lines are very used to working with storms and will do what is needed to keep their passengers safe and happy.

I sailed on September 9th, 2019 right after Dorian came through the Bahamas and Florida. Couldn't have asked for better weather or smoother sailing. I have another September cruise booked again. Will I be as lucky this time, who knows.

I've sailed in the Spring and missed ports such as Grand Cayman and Castaway Cay due to strong winds and rough seas. I guess it all depends.

Last August our eastern became a western due to Dorian. We were on the Fantasy and by grace of God we were still able to do CC. Those after us had cancelled cruises. Bahamas was destroyed next two days. Get insurance. To 90% you are ok.

I’ll never sail the Caribbean in September again.
Of our 8 cruises that have gone to the Caribbean, 4 of them were in September, 1 in November, 1 in June, 1 in May, and 1 in October. Since hurricane "season" is 1 June through 30 November, we've been in the "bad" time 7 times. Had absolutely no issues, either changed itineraries, canceled ports, or bad weather on any of them.

OP, if September is the time that's convenient for you, I'd say go for it.

Read my previous thread in the subject and see what you think. I’ll never sail the Caribbean in September again. Also do you really want the risk of your honeymoon upended, canceled, or dramatically changed?

I agree that I'd probably not sail again in Sept to mid October and it was due to the stress of last year. I live in an area that usually sees one mild to moderate hurricane each year since we moved here. So I have the worry on two fronts, the vacation and my home. If I choose to leave during this time of year for more than a couple of days I really need to do hurricane prep to my home just in case something pops up before I can get home, so that's a PITA if it ends up being unnecessary which is really the best case scenario. And then last year I sailed out of NYC to Bermuda, which was basically under a hurrican watch the week before up until the day or two before we were to arrive. The alternative for that cruise would have been to head up to Canada, a drastically different climate from Bermuda. I was flying into NY early to be with some friends. So that made packing super fun. And then at the tail end of the trip another hurricane was forming and some of the models had it hitting my home a couple of days after I was to get back. It was all just super stressful for me, much more stressful than what a vacation should be certainly.

The least stressful portion was what was going to happen after I got on the ship though. If you dont have the stress of being in a hurricane impacted area for your home then it might not be as stressful. Especially if you dont mind researching the likely alternative ports and having a plan B and C. If you have pets make sure your petsitter is available for a few extra days after just in case.

I looked into trip insurance, but all the fine print and all the hoops they make you jump to collect wasn't worth it. I just make sure I travel the day before the cruise and so far have saved 1000s with never getting trip insurance.

Until such time as you slip and fall somewhere and require medical coverage/evacuation. That's what we get insurance for.
