Some context first. My daughter (14) and I are both scared of rollercoasters, and mostly the drops. We went on the Mummy ride at Universal and it freaked us out, was too intense. We didn’t really have a frame of reference for 7DMT, but have read others commenting on it relative to Barnstormer, but that didn’t mean too much as we haven’t been on that, so after going in 7DMT, I wanted to give a personal perspective for those who are also fearful of drops. We also went on the Jurassic river cruise at Universal with a big 85ft drop at the end, which again was horrific, never again. We went on Gringots at Universal, and though the initial drop was scary, the rest of the ride was fun.

Let me start by saying that my daughter and I both loved 7DMT, and didn’t find it too intense at all, just very fun, and we HATE drops. The reason the drops didn’t feel intense is because the coaster actually slows down during the drops, and only speeds up once you’re out of it and curving around the corner. The slowing down on the drops made all the difference, because it removed that falling feeling in your stomach you get with drops that are fast. We ended up going a few times, because we had so much fun, and it didn’t feel scary at all. It’s the perfect rollercoaster if you’re scared of drops, but also want the feeling of zooming around with some speed (32mph not too fast, but fast enough).

Hope this is helpful to some people.

Think of it that most the ride is built into the ground/scenery. You won't be high on a track with space underneath of you. I never have the feeling of traditional coaster. The biggest drop you are still set in between the hills surrounded by scenery. And there is nothing scary like the entire story with Mummy. I think it's much more benign than Gringotts!

Thanks for this! I'm going with someone who has a fear of rollercoasters (particularly the drops) and this was a great explanation that I could pass on to them. I find it difficult to describe the rides to them in a helpful way since I love the more extreme coasters and it seems like the stuff I love will be the stuff they hate, but this description was perfect and based on what you said, they're now looking forward to trying 7DMT! Really appreciate you coming back to share after experiencing it.

Thoughts on any of the other coasters at WDW? Do you like Space Mountain or BTMRR?

Space is the last ride I would try to sell to someone scared of coasters tbqh. There’s no way to soft pedal all those sudden drops and turns on a track where you can’t anticipate anything because you’re in the dark. The herky jerky track just makes it worse.

I do not like coasters, but I do ride BTMRR occasionally. My preferred seat is the first car, as the engine blocks a lot of the forward view, and it is the car that feels like it travels slowest over any hills. I don’t feel the drops much at all from the front. The back is a totally different story.

7DMT is the only coaster I do - I’m terrified of heights and don’t like drops - even the drops on Pirates and Frozen give me a bit of a panic and I close my eyes in Soarin’…(I’m such a wimp)..but as the OP said - 7DMT doesn’t give me that falling sensation.

Space Mountain is not important to do for someone who doesn't like coasters. It whips you bounces you in the dark. The fear comes from the unknown. I've done it with lights on and it is way scarier. I would skip it.

Big Thunder is another one that is built into the landscape, it's faster, more thrill than 7DMT but I still think a good ride for non-coaster folks. More like a runaway crazy train.

I probably would say no to Slinky Dog. It's just a coaster (more thrilling than expected) with no landscape so you are in the air and banking looking down and might be too much.

RNR closed right now.

Everest - I love it, but I'm a coaster person. It just has so many different experiences in it. I would say for most part you don't feel like you are high off the ground. One climb high but it's on landscape and one big drop but again you don't see it coming and its over in a second. Both of these you can see from just watching so you could make a decision beforehand.

Guardians ... a coaster but doesn't feel like it. I would say a fast train. I didn't find it scary or even a thrill ride ... it's an experience. It can feel like it's moving fast, each car moves left to right, it's almost like it is a train dancing as it goes. :goodvibes Unlike anything I've been on before.

Does Guardians have a drop?
Not that I remember. A small launch at first but it's just a fast takeoff and then some slight banking left and right. The only kinda "drop" but isn't is at one point the track spirals down but it's a huge spiral so you might not even be aware of going down depending on what you can see in the dark. You can see it here where the track circles downward around the moon. Most is in the dark with the video screens so the purpose is for you to feel like you are flying in space.

No real drop. It has a LOT of twists and turns. The most disorientating in GoTG is the car turning. We didn't have a problem with it as it is super smooth. But I can easily see those who have issues with motion sickness having problems with it.

I went on Guardians 5 times, still got anxiety getting onto Space. It feels like I'm riding the coney island cyclone IN THE DARK.

I came here to say something similar. If you are afraid of drops but want to try a coaster, sit near the front, as the drops will almost always be less intense.

If you like this slowing effect during the drop on smaller coasters, you should ask to sit nearer the front. The rear of the train will have less of this. Alternatively if you like a MORE intense ride (as DS14 does) on 95% of roller coasters you want to sit in the back row, as that will transit the elements at the highest speed and exert the most forces on you.

Does Guardians have a drop?
guardians is launched, sped up slowed down using Linear Induction Motors, so no big drops. Similar, but newer smoother technology to rock n roller coaster. Old school coasters require a drop to get speed, newer coasters mix in launch systems, because they allow the elimination of the lift hill and drop, but compare, say, Space mountain (Gravity) to Tron (launch) and you'll see that a lot of the public prefer the pacing and speed of a launch coaster.

I am afraid of coasters and don't even attempt to ride them. But &DMT is not a coaster to me. It is a fun ride and nonscary to me. It goes fairly fast and has turns and the ride car swings with that, but not enough to be scared. This is all from the perspective of a very afraid coaster person.

I am NOT a coaster person, hate hate hate drops (even little ones like PoC) AND I get motion sick, but I LOVE BTMRR! Big THunder is just about my favorite ride anywhere. THe closer you sit to the engine, the less intense the ride, so maybe ask to sit right up front on your first time. I have also found that if I brace myself securely (feet firmly on the floor, hands firmly pressed on the back of the car in front of me) the ride is less intense; I don't feel like I'm being thrown around as much on the turns.
