Well we finally arrived for the vacation that DH, myself and DD 15, 9 and 7 have been dreaming of for 2 years. Thanks to the FTM we stayed at AKL.
We had requested and was assured we had a smoking room but after going into our room we discovered it wasn't. No problem they said - use the veranda. Okay no problem we thought.
After arriving in our room and stowing our suitcases DD7 found a prescription pill on the floor. Fortunately she knew to give it to us and not sample it herself.
So out to the veranda to check out the animals - there they were as promised. After sitting down we discovered soda of some type spilled all over the table. We wrote it off to yet another little housekeeping mistake. Much like the stains and dirt on the door sheers I'm sure.
The next day we discover it still hasn't been cleaned up so we pick up some napkins in Mara to clean it ourselves. Sadly we could find any windex to remove the prior occupants finger and nose prints off the sliding glass doors.
We decide to pickup a small cooler for beverages and stash it out of the way under the sinks. There we discover a thick layer of dust - wondering if AKL is into growing dust bunnies now.
As I apply my makeup I notice a thick layer of dust on the mirror base (which remains our entire visit).
Before you think I'm overly anal about cleanliness I'm not. We live in a 160 year old home that you can no doubt always find some dust in somewhere (but never that much unless its in the basement!)
A few nights layer while soundly asleep the phone rings. Automatic panic sets in - all 5 of us wake up fearing it was bad news. We left word - no calls from home unless a dire emergency occured with my elderly mother who is in a nursing home.
This late night phone call was the "night manager" Yvonne complaining about cigarette smoke on the veranda. I told her we had permission and anyway - no one had a cigarette out there for well over the hour and a half we were sound asleep. She said she was busy. Though she previously said we just had the cigarette a few minutes before that.
I asked what she would do about this confusion - going down 5 floors to have a cigarette would be a pain and she said couldn't help that. I then asked about the police helicopters that had been circling the resort (a man hunt was on) and she said she wasn't aware (talk about an understatement)
While I was waiting for my heart to regain a normal beat after the scare of the phone ringing - I reiterated my request that housekeeping actually use the vacuum in the room (this did no good).
We went down early the next morning abt 7 am for coffee leaving the oldest DD to watch the sleeping kids. The tables outside Mara still had the previous nights litter, beer bottles, liquor glasses etc resting comfortably across the breakfast tables. We cleaned off one table so we could sit. We watched several "cast members" amble by with brooms, etc. but it took until at least 7:30 before one decided to clean off the tables.
Had we not booked a "deluxe" room in a "luxory" resort I would of taken this more in stride but as we planned to spend time in our room enjoying the view and relaxing it put a damper on the entire vacation. This was far from the Disney Magic I remember from earlier years.
DH has not only vowed never to stay in a Disney Owned Property again but states he would have to give the idea of returning to WDW a lot of thought. Not due to the housekeeping but the terribly rude and incompetent staff that we some how managed to always find.
My kids say the best part of the vacation was the 3 days we spent in St. Augustine in the cheap hotel.

That' s horrible! I'm so sorry that you had so much trouble at AKL.

they should have given you a non-smoking room, even if you had to wait or it. I know they don't allow smoking on the bacolnies, because if I were next to you and you were smoking on the balcony, the smell would have driven me back into my room. It sounds like you had a REALLY bad housekeeper and what was the problem with the night manager? she sounds really weird.

Wow! I am truely sorry that you had such a bad experiance with the housekeeping at the AKL. Did you call housekeeping at any time during your visit? Just wondering becase every place of business has employees that do not do their jobs correctly and sometimes going right to the source is the best way to go. So if the problem is with housekeeping we call housekeeping directly not the front desk.

The smoking thing is interesting though because it was my understanding that you could not smoke on the balconies overlooking the savannas. If you had requested a smoking room they should have made sure you got one.

We truely love the AKL have stayed there three times since it opened in April of 2001 for a total of 20days. The CMs have always been great and we did have one issue with housekeeping when we checked in on our Feb 2003 trip but we called housekeeping told them we were on our way out to dinner but that if they could have it resolved before we got back around 9pm that would be great. When we got back the issue was resolved and the room was turned down. We were staying Concierge.

Sorry again I hope you might consider giving AKL another try as housekeeping issues can happen at any resort not just Disney Resorts.

The OP wanted a smoking room. The night manager was calling them because they received a report of smoking on a balcony. It was always my undrstanding that you were not suppossed to smoke on the balconies overlooking the savannas.

So sorry you had such a bad experience at AKL. What room were you in? We stayed in 4225 and it was great. Our mousekeeper was GREAT she got to know our schedule and made sure our room was nice and clean by afternoon. We usually came back to the room mid-day. But we always had a nice clean room and a couple extra towels. And I have to give our mousekeeper a lot of credit we have a VERY messy 2yro DD who loved the mickey pretzels and cheese puffs so you could imagine the mess on the floor. As for Maya there was always someone cleaning the tables. I am just so very sorry you had a bad time. I know it only takes one bad review to make you not want to go back. I only hope your next trip will be better!

rimfire, I had a similar experience at AKL in May with housekeeping. We won't be returning.

Edited to add: I wrote a letter about my experience to Disney and we did get a call from the executive offices at WDW on my voice mail-which I appreciated. However, I ended up playing phone tag with the girl who called me and finally gave up trying to connect with her. I didn't want to keep paying long distance charges.

We just returned today from a seven night stay at AKL. We were in rooms 5461, 5465 and 5467 and our rooms were very, very clean each and everyday through Thursday. We have stayed at many disney resorts and this was the cleanest room we have ever had.

On Friday we had a new person and while the room was clean they were only in our room for about five minutes that day (our family was right next door.) If we had that person all week we may have not liked our service.

Everyone there was very nice and we loved it. We will stay there again for many reasons.

Hi epcotfan,

Just wondering if you spoke with anyone in charge in the housekeeping dept while you were there? I just find that when we travel if you notice a housekeeping issue it is best to have it brought to the attention of the staff ASAP. Then if housekeeping management does not address escalate up while there so that they can resolve the situation.

I don't want to take away from rimfire's thread...however...We did initially talk to someone about the fridge, etc...but then over the course of the week there was a cumulative effect of other problems cropping up which left us with an overall bad impression. We wasted a lot of time initially trying to get things resolved and finally gave up. The final blow was the fact they threw out personal receipts and packaging that I needed for customs inspection. We noticed the item was gone at the last minute so we were unable to talk to someone about what happened.

Wow! I'm so sorry that your kids did not enjoy Disney World at all. Hope you have better luck in the future.

I'm so sorry you had such a horrible experience at AKL! We stayed there last May & needed a smoking room for DH, which we received. Although we were staying in a room overlooking the pool, the CM checking us in was very explicit about telling us there was absolutely no smoking on ANY balconies throughout the resort. We had a great trip & this is actually my favorite resort now.

HOWEVER, while we've always gotten our requested smoking rooms while staying in Disney, we've been on trips MANY MANY times when we were assigned non-smoking rooms, regardless of our request. The response at the front desk is always the same - just make sure you smoke on the patio/balcony. This only creates more problems for EVERYONE, not only for the people in surrounding rooms, but also for DH who then finds it uncomfortable to just have a cigarette. We go on vacation to escape life's problems - not create new ones!

No, I spoke directly with the front desk instead of housekeeping. In non Disney hotels I've never had a problem that was simply resolved that way. Silly me assuming that when they said at check in - "If you need anything let us know".
We too lost our box to My Pal Mickey - instructions as well. I had it on the side of the TV opposite the garbage - but I wasn't going to raise a fit because at least it was an effort at cleaning.

Oh no! When I booked at AKL,I was very concerned about the whole smoking thing. I don't like it but I can tolerate it. My friend, however, has very bad asthma and smoke causes an awful attack. She really can't breathe and then has to give herself a treatment with drugs that often give her extreme headaches.NO FUN . Its pretty scary to watch.
The CM assured me there is absolutely no smoking on balconies where smoke can drift to nearby rooms and bother others. So,wassup with this???? Is smoking allowed or not?
Smokers should have a place to go and smoke and not worry about bothering nonsmokers. I truely don't think they want that nor do I think they realize what a "little smoke" can do to someone with respiratory issues.
I guess I better call and find out exactly what the story is!

Definitely call then. I noticed several smokers on the veranda's in our section of the Lodge. Plus smoking was allowed in all the open areas around the pool and dining tables outside.
I do understand and respect non-smokers and that is why we specifically requested a smoking room. So evidently this is AKL way of dealing with it - very sad.
Also - if she has breathing issues - and I do not - be aware of the strong smell from Boma or wherever it originates - shortly after we arrived I remarked that we would of had to leave if my mother hadn't suffered the stroke and made the trip - it would of had her ill.
Same with the spraying for bugs during the daytime in the main traffic areas of the Lodge. Within 10 minutes I was hit by a terrible headache from walking through there.
