OMG...I'm glad you're not either. Wonder what comment Robert will come up with?I never thought about it, but now that you pointed it out....it does sound R-rated.

Even though I have to work tomorrow, I'm glad this week is over. It was pretty much non-stop rotation, work, homework, and eye doctor appointments, topped off by Linda getting an endoscopy yesterday. We had nobody to sit with the kids, so guess who sat in the hospital waiting room with me for nearly 3 hours? yeah, it was fun.
I tried to read some of the posts over the last couple days. I skimmed over the fluff around the pirate (By the way, congrats laurie!). Even though i wasn't posting, i appreciate the smiles that i got reading about all the goings-on here. Thanks Ballyhooer's!

I think we do things differently over here ....... but of course I hear you reply
We have the Saturday service, followed by Kiddish, then we're having immediate family and overseas guests back to our house for lunch. If the weather is nice lunch will probably stretch into a nighttime barbeque. Then on Sunday night we have the big "do". Other than Joshua's Dvar Torah all speeches are done on Sunday night. Josh gets the pleasure of having to do 2 as he's got the Dvar Torah and his barmitzvah response.![]()

For once I'm not going to be saying anything ...... and you can save the remarks

Remarks me?![]()

No I only had 1 speech and the kids have 1. Our events can be broken up into a day night affair, or happen right after the Service & Kiddush.
I have not heard of 2 days but if you got the money!![]()
But you have it all on the Saturday right ?
It's the "norm" over here to have the "party" in whatever format it's going to be on the Sunday night
We follow the US Conservative movement so at the Temple U can have lunch after the services & U can have a band however they would have to bring their instruments into the building on Friday before 3PM and everything has to be Kosher. Or U can wait for the party untill after sunset & the band can come then however all still must be Kosher!![]()
Or if U do not follow Kashrut as my family does not, U can have the party outside the Temple and do as U please night or day!![]()

I have heard of really large Bar Mitzvah's where they have services, a kiddush afterwards, then a big lavish night time party and a smaller breakfast or brunch the following day for all who came from out of town!![]()
It's interesting to read how things vary - and yet are the same.
My Bar Mitzvah story was very strange - I was actually living in Israel at the time and was the youngest in my class. So it was very annoying when in 7th grade many of my friends would vanish for Bar Mitzvah class (taught by a really nice guy we called Rabbi Yossi who taught in his dining room). Rather than being bored at home I started just tagging along. This went on for several months.
One day my dad brought up that it was close to time for us to arrange for Bar Mitzvah classes. He was floored when I told him I'd already been going for months.
I ended up having a very traditional service (lots of Torah reading, but no speech), and pissing off some of the congregants because I insisted on giving some of the most prestigious Aliyot to my friends who had been Bar Mitzvahed just weeks before (but my dad backed me up on that).
Then a nice but casual party at home (all of which got paid for out of the gifts I received - we weren't exactly flush at the time).
Later I got in trouble for being very slow to write thank you letters (I mean, it's not as if I got to keep any of the money).
Still - good memories....
