7/14/2014 - 12-Night Mediterranean Cruise (with Greece) Venice to Barcelona

(just caught up... catches breath)

Hey, MPS, make sure you book another cruise onboard regardless, then use it for your 2015. You look like a repeat offender, so you can roll that one (two?) staterooms right into a lovely little discount on release day rates for another European (alaskan, panamanian, asian, whatever) Disney Cruise. Just because our itinerary has outpriced your rebooking, doesn't mean you can't take advantage of it before the 2015 ships post. Something tells me you already knew that, so just posting in case someone is interested.

Just started looking at what we will book on board the Panama Cruise, surely will be a dummy until we decide what to do - Hoping for Baltic pixiedust: Looking at Paul G. in Society Cook Islands Feb 2015, don't like using other lines but have had to 5 times now.

Hello all. I just booked this cruise. Been watching it for a while and trying to convince dh to do it. He finally said yes yesterday. We had an onboard booking so I moved it to this one this morning. I'm very excited. It will be just my DH Mike and myself. Can't wait!

Welcome to the group! Its going to be amazing, and i'm happy to hear he said Yes! How long did it take to convince him?

Well it's been probably 4 months since my BFF booked this same cruise and I've been telling him since then that we needed to book too. I just started telling him we are going and he would blow it off or make a joke.

Finally yesterday he asked how much for just the two of us. My answer was "a lot" then he said well make it happen then. I finally wore him down. We will both celebrate birthdays on this cruise (21 July is mine 24 July is his) and it will be the first vacation without the kids that I can remember.

Welcome, :wave2: this is going to be a great cruise

LOLOL - mine is during the cruise too! Let's have a giant cake one night! /cheers :cheer2: I always wanted to celebrate my birthday in Greece, and now we get to!

There has been a number of comings and goings, it seems, and as of yet, I don't see a F/E list set up. There is a Facebook group (closed) for those who are on there; the details are on page 1 of this thread, I believe? Keenercam has been monitoring it.

Hi there,

Just joining this cruise meet. :) We went on the July 13 - 25 Med Cruise (with Greece) this summer, and loved it so much that we booked this cruise on board. SO, we are going back to the Med again next year. It was so amazing... we can't wait to go back and see more of Greece (and go back to Turkey and Malta, too!), and we LOVE Venice, so this was another excuse to go back and visit Venice again (this trip next summer will be our 3rd time to Venice). We also loved Malta... it was such an amazing place. Before our cruise, we didn't think Malta would be a highlight, but for us, Malta was a definite highlight (and so was Ephesus... just amazing) Really, the entire cruise was a highlight!

I think there are some people on here who were part of our cruise meet this summer (JimmyJackJunior and SLG.. anyone else??) We'll get to see each other again next summer! :cool1:

There are 4 of us... Myself & DH, then DS (will be 13 during cruise) and DS (11 almost 12 during cruise). We are from Seattle. We have early dining.

We just booked our outbound flight, too (used our miles on British Airways to book), so that makes it for sure we're going on the cruise! :) We have to wait to book our inbound flight because they haven't released those flights yet for mileage tickets. But, hopefully we'll have our inbound flight booked sometime soon. I've also booked our lodging for Venice (we're arriving to Venice on the 10th to spend a few days there before the cruise).

Looking forward to getting to know all of you. I'll join the FB group, too.

It is wonderful to see so many new people coming onboard. Our Facebook group is up to 33 members!!

As you book airfare, please share your experiences here. I can't get a handle yet on what will be reasonable for Philadelphia to Venice and then Barcelona to Philadelphia, booked as round-trip, multi-destination tickets.

What is everyone thinking for Venice Hotels. There are so many choices. Do I understand it is best to stay in San Marcos area?

I will be great hearing about your recent Med experience, it may help a lot in planning for this cruise. We are torn between spending a week in Switzerland or 4 days in Venice prior to the cruise. Everything we are seeing indicates VEnice is a very easy walk around city so thinking we will stay somewhere central to the points of interest, where did you end up ?

I think there is no bad area to stay in Venice, as the entire city is amazing, BUT just keep note that the closer you stay to San Marco the more expensive hotels, food, shopping, etc will get. It is easy to walk to San Marco's square from pretty much everywhere... obviously, the farther you stay from San Marco's square, the farther the walk it'll be, BUT Venice is such an amazing place to just walk around, it's almost kind of fun staying far from San Marco's square because you have an excuse to walk all over Venice that way. Also, San Marco's Square can get SOOO crowded!! The farther you stay from San Marco's Square, the less crowded it typically gets.

I could share so much about our Med cruise... it was so amazing...every single day. There was not even a day where our kids (who were 10 and 12) complained about being too busy or doing too much. They loved every minute, too. You all will have to ask questions, because there is too much for me to share that I wouldn't know where to start!! :)

Yes, Venice is VERY easy to walk around... you will get lost the first day or two you are there, but you soon get to know your way around pretty well. we stayed in Venice for 3 days before our Med cruise this summer (we flew from Venice to Barcelona to catch the ship). It was amazing! It was DH and my 2nd time to Venice, and our kid's 1st time, and our kids loved it! We stayed at a small boutique hotel near the train station that was reasonably priced (for Venice... keep in mind, though, Venice is expensive no matter what, so you will likely pay more for hotels there, even the cheaper ones than you would in other cities, so "reasonably priced" in Venice might be "expensive" for other cities in Europe). I tried to book us at the same hotel again for next summer when we are in Venice, and they are already booked up for their family room (that fits 2 adults, 2 kids), but they may have space for rooms for 2 people. We LOVED it. It was called, "Hotel Canal Grande". http://www.hotelcanalgrande.it/ We were so sad when we found out they were booked for their family rooms (which is a 1-bedroom suite) for July 2014 before our cruise. But, if you can get a room there, it's SO worth it, and for what you get, worth the price. And, now, after pricing other hotels in Venice that have rooms to fit a family of 4, I'm realizing this hotel (Hotel Canal Grande) is a GOOD deal for a family of 4 (even though it is expensive, but it's still cheaper than a lot of other hotels of this caliber that have rooms for 4). They have excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, too, and after staying there, I can see why. And, if you are coming in to Venice on the train, it's SO convenient. Literally a 5 - 7 minute walk from the train station (we came into Venice on the train). So, I highly recommend this place, but if you are a family of 4 (or more), I don't think they have space before the cruise, but if you are just 2 people, contact them to see what rooms they have. If you can get a Canal View, it's SOOO worth the price! We paid for a Canal View, and I don't regret on Euro we spent on that Canal View room. :) But, they have non-Canal View rooms, too, that are much cheaper.

And, this hotel is about a 30 - 40 minute walk to San Marco's Square, which seems far, but honestly, it's just SO neat walking through all the little streets/alley-ways in Venice from this hotel to San Marco's Square that we didn't mind the walk at all. And, the food is way cheaper in this area than in the San Marco's Square area. :) You can also take a water bus to San Marco's square for a lot faster, but then you are paying money to get there... and walking is free. :)

The hotel we have booked for next summer pre-cruise is called, "Palazzo San't Angelo". http://www.palazzosantangelo.com/ . It is more expensive than Hotel Canal Grande for a family room, but I did a lot of looking around on Trip Advisor and the internet, and this is what we ended up with... it has excellent reviews. It is expensive, though! But, for what we get, it's MUCH more space and amenities than what we'd get near San Marco's square for the same price. Basically, unless you rent an apartment, staying in a hotel with a family of 4 in Venice is expensive, but worth it, if you can splurge, because Venice is an amazing place. :)

I will say that when I emailed Palazzo San't Angelo to inquire about rooms accommodations that will fit our family, they gave me a much cheaper quote in email than what came up on their website!! I was so surprised, and so we booked it right away because of the deal they gave us (even though it's stil expensive!) So, if you consider this place (or any hotel, in Venice, email them directly and see what quote they come up with and see if they quote you a better price in email than what their website brings up). Also, this hotel (Palazzo San't Angelo) does not have free internet in their hotel (you have to pay for it), but before I agreed to book the room, I got them to agree to throw in free internet for us for our entire stay, and we also get a free full breakfast every morning, too! :) So, if anyone books here, make a request before you book to have them throw in free internet and breakfast and see if they will do that. :thumbsup2

We booked a Canal View room at this hotel, so we are paying more because of that, BUT they had much cheaper options for a family of 4 (2 classic connecting rooms with no view for significantly cheaper, and fairly affordable). But, for us, going to Venice is all about being able to see the Canals, and having a Canal View room for us is all part of the Venice experience. :)

But, there are SO many lodging options in Venice with so many different prices... probably the most affordable is if you can rent an apartment. But, what you choose and what you pay just depends on what is most important to you, and what you want in lodging.

Just look at Trip Advisor for reviews, and if the lodging you are looking at has mostly 4 and 5 star positive reviews, then you are probably going to happy with it! I never book lodging where the majority of reviews on Trip Advisor are NOT extremely positive.

So I have been playing with American Airlines for flights for next year..now that July is listed. I have discovered that if I check the box at the bottom that says American flights only then British airways will not show up. With one world checked....then....If a leg is on British there are a lot of taxes! Almost $700 on some that I looked at. But the airline miles required are way less. The route is also horrible, many legs just to get there some with overnight stay.
With the box for only American checked it takes more miles, less legs and way less taxes...one was only $25.00...

What to do....

Want to do something, somewhere before the cruise...just have to figure it out.
Today's thoughts.... fly into Paris visit friends who live outside of Paris (a few hours to the west) and then take a train (if there is one) to Venice....

Also need a place to stay in Venice or near that can hold 3 adults! Would like to use Marriott points....
Trying not to use anything but points and miles.... :)
:rolleyes1

we use miles all the time to fly, and I look at what is the best deal I'm getting compared to paying full fair. So, for international flights, sometimes miles really isn't a great deal (unless you have a lot to spend), but sometimes using miles IS a great deal.

In your case, I'd look at what a full fair ticket costs in the class you are planning to fly in, and if the full fair ticket is significantly more than the $700 in taxes you'd pay for less miles (even though it's a lousy route), it may be worth it to pay the $700 in taxes and spend less miles because you are still getting a good deal compared to paying the price for the ticket.

However, if the full fair ticket, let's say, is only like $1300, then paying $700 in taxes plus the miles is a bad deal. You might as well pay the full fair and save the miles.

However, if you have lots of miles to spare, I'd say go for the $25 in taxes, the more miles and book that. But, if you are trying to conserve miles, then that may not be a great deal, depending on how many miles this particular ticket costs. Again, you can look at the price of the full fare ticket, and see if you think that fair is worth the amount of miles they are asking for, and that may help you decide what to do.

For us, we fly British Airways (yes, they have super high taxes with their miles), but my DH flies British for all his international travel for work, so he has tons of miles with them and he is gold status (which waves all sorts of fees, and has all sorts of perks), so we are willing to pay the taxes with them to fly them internationally with miles. But, with British, in my opinion, the only time using miles for their seats are worth it is if you are traveling in Business Class or First Class, because a business class seat on British Airways direct from Seattle to London during peak travel is $6,000 round trip, so for us to use miles for Business Class plus pay the $700 in taxes per person is worth it because we are basically getting a $6,000 seat for $700, plus miles. But, I would never use our miles to fly coach on British... I'd just pay the full fair because a coach ticket (depending on when you fly) is between $1300 - $1600 to London, and paying the miles required plus the $700 in taxes, we're really only getting 50% off the flight, plus spending a bunch of miles... not worth it.

SO, you just have to analyze it well, and figure out what is the best deal. Or, sometimes just forget what is a good deal and just do the miles with the least amount of taxes (in this case, the $25), and know you are saving a ton of money that can be used for fun experiences on your trip!!! :thumbsup2

Miles is a complicated game, I think. There is a great forum you should look at (if you don't know about it already) called, www.flyertalk.com Look up your airlines you have miles with and it's just like the DisBoards... people write in with tips, ideas, etc with redeeming and earning miles on that particular airline. You can learn a lot from other people that way. I read the British Airway forumn all the time to figure out little tricks, etc. :)

Good luck!!! And, I don't have any recommendations for a Marriott in Venice... but I'm sure there is one. I love using miles for as many thing as I can.
