I agree with SC Minnie, if I have to do all the work I want a discount. Kmart took them out, too many problems. Winn Dixie still has them but they don't work very well. Most times I will wait in line for a cashier.

I like the self checkouts too and I hope that they're here to stay once the bugs get worked out. I've rarely had any problems with them though.

Ronda93 - thanks for the tip. Now I know what the "skip bagging" button is for!

I like 'em ... they're great when I only have a couple of items. I have seen people at the supermarket with an entire cart full of items trying to use them. :p

I like the "self checkout" lanes. Sorry you had troubles so early this morning.

Stupid Technology....even worse: Stupid Walmart :p

Sorry about the bad experience...thats no fun.

I for one prefer the self checkouts at places like Walmart...if only to avoid contact with creepy walmart people :scared: I HATE Walmart!

We love the self chec outs at the grocery store they are never crowded and it is very easy to use I don't think we ever go to the regular checout lines if they have self serve ones.

Actually, I'd love if our Wal-Mart had self check-outs, and if they'd actually price the PLU code in the vegetable dept on the same sign as the price.

I had a cart full of groceries went to the cashier:

I say: "M'am, that isn't celery, you rang it wrong, it is Bok Choy."

Cashier: "It looks like celery"

Me: "No, celery isn't white with broad leaves, it is Bok Choy, an Asian veggie that taste like watercress."

Cashier: "OK", and she rings up watercress.

Me: "No, M'am, it isn't watercress, it is Bok Choy, 79¢ per pound."

Cashier: "I can't find the code on my chart."

Me: "Well watercress and celery are more expensive. Bok Choy is 79¢ per pound."

Cashier: "CSM to register 4, I need a code."

CSM: "Celery?"

Me: "Bok Choy 79¢ per pound."

CSM: "I can't find the code." on PA: "Produce manager to register 4."

Produce manager arrives: "Problem?"

CSM: "I can't find a code for this stuff."

PM: "It's Bok Choy, it is listed on the chart."

CSM & Cashier "Where?"

PM: "Right here, under B."

CSM: "Why isn't it with the celery?"

PM: "Because it is Bok Choy, not celery."

CSM: "We should call it white celery."

3 minutes later...

Me: "M'am, that isn't summer squash, it is Mexican Squash, 69¢ per pound."

Cashier: "Squash is squash."

Me: "Wel,, yes, but Summer Squash is 89¢ per pound, this is 69¢ per pound."

Cashier: "CSM to Reg 4..."

You get the idea.

Cashiers would be fine IF they'd take 10 minutes before their shift to walk through the produce section and learn their veggies, codes and prices. But our WM isn't going top pay them for that, it is cheaper to provide little or no customer serivce, especially when there is only one other store in town and it is just as bad.

DS loves self checkout so when we head to a grocery store that has one, that's where we go if we have under 20 items. He loves it.....I don't care.

I LOVE self-check out when I choose to use it. It's really poor customer service of Walmart to offer that as the ONLY option though. I can can see why the OP had problems.
