$6000 for braces UPDATE: See Post 72

My DS12 had 4 baby teeth pulled over a year ago. The adult teeth had erupted and the baby teeth werent even loose! (His mouth is a train wreck.) And he just had the last 2 baby teeth pulled at Christmas...because of his crowding issues, the ortho and dentist both agreed that they would never come out on their own. Maybe in a perfect world they lose their baby teeth by 10, but whose kid has perfect teeth? People with about $5000 more in the bank than the rest of us! :lmao:

My daughter just had her expander removed and still has a year for her braces. Most everyone I know including myself have a $1500.00 life time max....They won't pay for it all at once...my ortho has his own payment plan...(I would tell my x to go pound salt if he was judging an ortho on price alone...geeezzzzzzzzzzzz:woohoo:

Our DS needed braces also. Two were recommended by our Dentist and friends. One wanted him to have his wisdom teeth out and oral surgery that would have meant breaking his jaw before he would put him in braces. The other said that there was new technology that would resolve his problem without the surgery or pulla pulla stuff right now and she would put him in braces within the month. She showed us how the new thing works, I talked to a Dr. to verify that what she was saying about how bone in the jaw forms and he said that it would work.

We opted for Dr. #2 - the more expensive one by $6-8 hundred. Even though we have the typical $1500 ortho coverage, the rest would have been covered under dental with 90/10. I had to look at what was least invasive and in our DS's best interest. I felt surgery was out of the question. BTW, 1 year down and his teeth look really great! He is about to have the springs put on his braces that is going to bring the bottom jaw forward. He will have those on for 6 months and according to kids who have also had this, he won't even notice they are there.

My point, money isn't everything even in ortho! Good luck with your decision.

Chiming in on not having all your baby teeth gone by 10.5. DS11 still has 8 baby teeth. DD14 just had her last 7 baby teeth pulled, and still has a few molars to grow in. The ortho talked me into it, but I have a gut feeling they would have come out eventually. DD was glad, because it is embarassing to be losing teeth in the middle of class when you're in 8th grade, not to mention high school.

My DS just lost his last baby tooth last summer just before the braces went on. He was almost 16 1/2!! My DH still has baby teeth and he is 46!
