600% increase in cost!

The upgrade price is absurd. Hopefully when the 2017 prices are released by Disney they will reveal a more favourable price. At this present time, booking a package through Virgin Holidays UK, I'm quoted $3625 to move to the Disney Dining Plan.

I worked out the percentage as:
2016 upgrade price $50.57 per day
2017 upgrade price $362.60 per day
That's an increase of 617% that I would need to pay. Is this the correct way of looking at the figures?

It's fabulous to have advice on here about this problem. I will contact Virgin for a breakdown and look forward to Disney to releasing the 2017 figures. Either way it will be a fabulous vacation.

Nope, it is (closer to) 600%.
Difference in cost to upgrade from Basic (QS?) to DDP (standard?) in 2016 = $505.70
Difference in cost to upgrade from Basic (QS?) to DDP (standard?) in 2017 = $2171.35
Now, that number and the next one were done in my head :D so I make no claims of accuracy, but it looks to me like over a 400% increase anyway.

The posters above seem right - it could very well be an upgrade to the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan.

Okay, this is middle school math, lol:

The Deluxe dining plan in 2016 is $195.95 per day.
The Deluxe dining plan in 2017 is $362.50 per day

This is a difference of $166.55 or (wait for it....) 85%. $195.95 multiplied by 1.85 (aka 85%) = $362.50

If it were 600%, you would multiply the $195.95 by 6.0 (aka 600%) which would give you a daily total of $1175.70.

Is it possible that you are using the wrong terms and so they quoted you the Deluxe Dinning Plan upgrade or even the step above deluxe instead of the disney dinning plan upgrade?

Your error (just so you can see it) is that you are comparing the cost to upgrade in 2016 (the $50.57) to the total cost in 2017. That's not how you calculate increases in cost. You have to compare total product cost in 2016 ($195.95 per day) to total product cost in 2017 ($362.50). That is where you can see that there is an increase of 85%.

Thanks for the excellent responses.

Yes, upgrading from Quick Service Plan to Disney Dining Plan.

Here are the 2016 figures that I've been working with:

Basic plan $44.13 per adult
Basic plan $19.04 per child
Total for family of 5 = $88.26 + $57.12 = $145.38 per day
Total for 10 days = $1453.80

Dining Plan $63.70 per adult
Dining Plan $22.85 per child
Dining Plan for family of 5 = $127.4 + $68.55 = $195.95 per day
Total for 10 days = $1959.50

That's a difference of $505.70 to upgrade at the 2016 prices. However, I'm quoted $3625 for 2017. Are my figures and research incorrect???

I've been unable to find 2017 prices and I guess they're not released yet. As suggested, maybe it will be best to just 'pay as you go' when we arrive.

Is the $3625 the new TOTAL or the difference? I'm wondering if they are quoting you the Deluxe Plan price. The DxDDP for the 5 of you would be $3366.30 which is at least a little closer to that $3625. Also, what are the ages of your kids? Remember anyone 10 and older is considered a Disney adult. Could that be the difference you're not seeing?

I'm calculating the difference in the cost to upgrade, which is what it appears the OP is questioning. Not the difference in the costs of the plans.
2016 it costs about $506 to upgrade five people.
2017 it costs about $2171 to upgrade five people.
$506/100%=$2171/x%
$2171*100=217100
217100/505=430%ish
Again, that's all calculated in my head, no claims as to accuracy.

The bottom line is, that $3625 upgrade price you've been given is flat out incorrect. You can buy the DxDP for all 10 nights for less than that, assuming all 3 of your children are under 10 at the time of the trip.

You CAN'T compare those costs because you don't know all the variables. The cost he was given would be the total price, not the cost to upgrade, though it would appear he probably misunderstood that. You have no idea what the cost is for the basic dining plan in 2017, so therefore you cannot calculate the difference in upgrade cost between 2016 and 2017.

If the cost for the basic dining plan increases significantly as well, let's say even by 50%, then the new basic plan is $2180, then the cost to increase is $1445, roughly a 285% increase from the $505 in 2016. However, if the basic plan also increases at the same rate as the other, then the difference is $937, and it's only an 85% increase. If the basic dining plan only increases to say $1750, then the difference is $1875 to upgrade, which THEN you're looking at roughly a 375% increase in the cost to upgrade.

But again - what you (and he) are trying to calculate is pointless because it's wrong/inaccurate because you don't have the right figures to work with. If OP can actually get us the cost of the basic dining plan in 2017, then we can figure out the difference between it and the $3625 dining plan, and only then, can you calculate out what you're trying to do. Until then, the only figure that you can accurately calculate and the only one worth working with, is the difference in cost between the dining plan in 2016 and 2017.

I put the parameters in myself: April 2017, 2 adults, 3 children, 10 days:

Quick service is 1476 US $, Regular Dining is $1996, deluxe dining is $3296 (based on today's exchange of course) at the basic room (and dining plan seems to cost more depending on what room you get).

So, whatever is going on, the numbers that OP gave us are not accurate. It's obvious the $3625 is either the total cost of a Deluxe dining plan, or some other number. But it's most certainly not what the upgrade cost is between basic and deluxe dining.

Just found the 2017 prices on the Disney UK website:
Quick Service Dining Plan (10 days x 5 adults) = £1449 ($2090)
Disney Dining Plan (10 days x 5 adults) = £2099 ($3027)

A difference of £650 ($937)

Quote from Virgin Holidays email:
I have double checked the costing to upgrade from the Disney's Quick Service to the Disney Dining Plan would be an additional £2510.77 which is subject to availability and re-cost.

I guess the answer is to not book through Virgin Holidays next time.

Yeah unfortunately not. You definitely got screwed by them for sure. What's the cancellation policy with them? Could you cancel the package and just re-book direct through Disney? If you scroll down on the Disney Holidays UK site, they're offering packages starting May 28th with 2 weeks lodging at Caribbean Beach Resort, tickets, free dining and 200$ US spending money, starting at only £857 per person. Even if you have to eat a cancellation penalty, you may still come out (significantly) ahead. Even if you can't take advantage of that deal, you'll probably still save money.

More than likely, the change requires them to cancel everything and rebook without whatever discounts you may have received initially, or maybe even move to a different class of room if the one you're booked in is sold out.

I bet you'd have more luck getting your reservation number and calling Disney directly to upgrade, but you'll likely have to wait until they release US pricing for 2017.

Ahhh.... Not fair!!! lol.

OP, maybe the price is just an estimate?

Free dining plans have been already announced for the UK/Ireland Disney pages.

Value get only a credit/day for breakfast
Moderate get QS
Deluxe get TS.

Also they get (Mod/Del) 2 Snack credits per day.

Also get Memory maker for free and also 200$ voucher to spend in Disney.

Fair or not... they are trying to get us Europeans go to Disney, taken into account the prices we pay for our flights it's a good move for them to release these offers as otherwise Europeans wouldn't be able to afford that much the trips to WDW.

This is crazy! Are you based in the UK ? I've got friends that have booked via the IE web instead of the British one (they're europeans so paying in euros is better), they have upgraded from QS to TS and def. not being requested to pay 3625$ just for the food, are you sure that's not the final price which includes the hotel and tickets to the parks? as those are the prices my friends have committed to via Disney's web. Would be surprised if Virgin was trying to charge that much as otherwise nobody would go with them!

Dear Everyone

Booked for a ten night stay at Disney Yacht and Beach Club for April 2017. Because of the dates we are not eligible for the free dining plan. I have booked though Virgin and added the Basic Dining Plan. Yippee!!

I would like to upgrade from Basic to the Disney Dining Plan but I'm being told it will cost me an extra £2510.37 ($3625.13). Thats over 600% increase in price from 2016.

Doesn't sound right to me. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Phil

Family: 2 adults, 3 children
Dates: 31st March - 10 April, 2017 (10 nights)
Accom: Disney Yacht and Beach Club

Hi Phil
I'm in the cold UK also.

Firstly-I must ask;
Are you staying at both the beach club and the yacht club?
The price on Wdw UK site for beach club is £4330 for 10 nights
Although the yacht club was available-it was a suite and more than double!!!!

Please excuse me dis folks as I'm tired and not converting from £'s to $'s
However-the basic math principles work in whichever currency.

Focussing solely on 2017 prices:
Quick service plan
Adult per night -£28.99
Child per night -£11.99

Therefore 2A+3C= £939.50

Regular dining plan
Adult per night-£41.99
Child per night-£13.99

Therefore 2A+3C=£1259.50

Deluxe dining plan
Adult per night-£73.99
Child per night -£20.99

Therefore 2A+3C= £2109.50

As you can see-the TOTAL price for deluxe dining is less than you've been quoted for an upgrade to the regular dining plan.
Which is either a rather terrible miscalculation or they're taking the proverbial...

I would ask again & see if virgin alter their prices..
If not-seriously consider either cancelling your booking or rearranging to perhaps flight only or car & flight deal
Then, book your accommodation, tickets and dining all direct with disney UK travel company.
