We heard through a truck driver friend that you can now bring back a 60 ouncer of XXX when travelling back from the US. Has anybody heard of this? Thanks pirate:

We came through Port Huron last month and it was still 1 case of beer or 40 oz of liquor. I wish that instead of 1 bottle and a carton of cigarettes per person each time you stay 48 hours that they would let you bring two items of alcohol instead of cigarettes. Thats is just because I dont smoke.

I told my DH that it probably wasn't true- coming from the source, but he wouldn't believe me! :goodvibes

I have a Canada Customs Declaration in front of me--picked up last week

It states: Age over 19yrs
1.5 L of Wine OR 1.14L of Liquor OR 24x355 ml (12 oz) of
Bottles/Cans of Beer or Ale (8.5L)

:)

In November when we came home the people in Duty Free told us we could take a 60 oz back...so we each bought one and headed back. When we hit customs they asked us how big the bottles were and we told them. They said that the people in Duty Free were WRONG and that it was only 40 oz allowed. He let us go anyway, so they must know that they are telling people the wrong information. I am so glad they didn't charge us on it. :)

It is done by truck drivers, although not legally.

Don't mean to flame I just find it odd that whenever someone is seeking government information (TSA, Transport Canada, Customs, Passports, etc.) that they come to the boards rather than google and get actual, factual information rather than second hand which may (in the above posts it is) or may not be correct.

The necessary info. is 2/3 of the way down on this link.

Some folks may find searching for info on the net a little daunting.

But I'm also perplexed at some of the questions folks ask.

What time is the 3 o'clock parade?

I didn't realize that it would 'inflame' people for asking a question. I was on here at the time, my DH came by, we chatted, I posted, and left to do some other things. It's really no big deal. I also later checked the website that people listed b/c I couldn't find the info I was looking for. Thanks to those people who answered my question.

The information above is correct (1.14 l) to bring back into Canada without duties after a 48 hr visit in the US.
But what a lot of people don't know, is that you can take more than that into the US because the duties are so low, they are rarely charged. The duty that you could be charged on an extra bottle of liquor is approx. $2. The duty on extra wine is $.28 a bottle. And duty on an extra case of beer going into the US is $1.25. With the amounts so low, any extra duties are rarely charged. But if they ask you what you have, always declare the amounts that you've purchased at the Canadian Duty Free. And leave it up to US Customs if they want to charge you the small amount of $$. It usually costs them more to process it than they could collect.

Wasn't inflamed, and as I said, did not intend to flame. Just pointing out how easy it is to find the factual answer rather than opinions that are often found here on the dis. Particularly, when it comes to questions as it relates to government statutes, the answer is important and it is very easy to find that factual answer. There can be misinformation shared here and occasionally, a poster will go with the answer that best meets their needs not one based in fact.

as of feb. it is still 40oz but in 8 years of at least two trips a year i have brought back two 60's been honest about it and not had a problem. maybe just been lucky.
