60 Days Sentence for Child Rape in Vt.

Yes, it's the judicial system. I posted a thread here before about how angry we, in our neighborhood, are because a man killed a teen driver by hitting her (and rolling over on her little car) in a full gravel truck and they later found he had not maintained the brakes on that vehicle. He just got a few months and time served....and he took her life!! :worried:

I heard about this last week. It was sickening. My question after that was whether this judge was elected to his terms (likely) or some kind of appointment. I hope he was elected. His challenger in the next election should have an easy time, if the locals are as as outraged as we are.

Issuing appropriate punishments to society's offenders is a judge's job. It's what we expect and trust them to do. Cashman has demonstrated an unwillingness to do that job and should be removed.

14 years old shows up in the post that I am reading. With regard to your friend, a 14 year old child cannot consent to sex with an adult (18) In some states, proximity of age mitigates that. There is a big difference between 14 and 18 however. If I were the Dad or Mom, I would have pressed charges too.

Where are the people who don't believe statutory rape is "real" rape and swear they would never press charges against an adult that had sex with their 14 year old?

I too think the sentences for vehicular manslaughter are usually to light as well. I read one story of a girl who was out drunk-driving, killed another driver, and got 60 days.

This judge isn't liberal or conservative, but just plain crazy!

I'd call myself liberal in some areas, but sentencing in criminal trials isn't one of those areas. There are times when rehabilatation is called for, sex crimes aren't one of them!

A judge like that is the typical liberal just as much as Pat Robertson is the typical conservative. Geez, how about just being horrified as a human without using this tragedy as a reason to beat up people who don't agree with you politically?

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

Yes, I did hear about this.

Politics aside
What the judge did was unspeakable! It disgusts me completely that this "man" will go free in 60 days to do the same thing. I can not even begin to have enough words to describe how this makes me feel!

That poor child and family!
What the judge did was just evil!

Yep, of course they tend to be parents of boys not girls.

For those of you who slam OReilly, at least give credit where credit is due. There are times (like this) when OReilly shines the national spotlight on a situation like this. And with all the national exposure, my bet is the following gets done:

1) This judge will resign, and if not get impeached by the VT legislature.
2) Minimum sentences for child abusers will get signed into law soon.
3) This "man", as I understand it, can still somehow be re-sentenced.

OReilly can be a blowhard, and get off on rants. But this is a case where he is serving the public good (regardless of motivation) and those of you who can't stand him shoud at least give him kudos.

In the last few weeks in the UK we have had three cases of child rape, a three year old was taken from the bath in her home, and then left naked in the snow, a six year old was taken from her house, and now we have two babysitters a man in his forties and his girlfriend nineteen have raped a twelve week old baby he has got life ( a maximum of 12 years) and she has got five years. I hope the other prisoners get hold of them.

Vermont is a liberal state. He was an appointed judge.

And that really pertains to this case? Can't you for once let politics go and see the deeper meaning here? An atrocity was committed against a child - who cares if the judge is liberal or conservative!
Making this issues political truly sickens me.

Believe me, I don't stand alone in branding this judge a liberal. I think you can google it and see for yourself.

That doesn't make your stance any less ridiculous. It just means there are more nuffies out there who think the same balderdash. Worrying, really.

So what's your point? Both liberal and conservative judges make poor choices all the time..

Also, where did you get your data that supports your statement that Vermont is a "liberal" state? I know plenty of folks who live there that would be happy to argue that point with you..

As for the rapist? With any luck he won't even survive the 60-day sentence.. Prisoners have their own brand of justice for cases like this..
