Is this restaurant okay for a shy kid? He probably wont eat if someone is "picking " on him so to speak. Are the antics over the top? I'm just trying to decide if I should Keep this on our to do list or to go somewhere else?

Having been to 50's Prime Time plenty of times before (a personal fav. of mine), it really depends on the party and the server.

If you have a large party (4 and over), then the waiter will definitely play up the antics. I usually go there with one other person(2 adults) and we only get the standard "Hey kids, make sure to set the silverware and keep those elbows off the table. I want to see those greenbeans gone." routine. For large parties, I've seen a waiter shovel food into a dad's face or force them to take off a hat. Anything for laughs. But they will most likely shine more attention on their younger visitors considering the theme.

So, if he's sensitive, I suggest trying to find somewhere else unless the above sounds okay.

Your post struck a cord with me since I remember visiting there as a elementary schooler and not enjoying the attention they gave me. But that was a looong time ago. :teeth:

I've read in reviews that usually the servers will pick up cues that a diner isn't into it and leave them alone.

We are going to Primetime for the 1st time in Sept and I'm looking forward to it.

Good luck!

My DH is the nicest guy ever, but he furrows his brow when he is thinking and is Asian which can make for a menacing look doncha know, and the servers seem to sense he is not into it (though really he is not against it) and don't push.

Funny, we get treated like he is so intimidating at many restaurants, and he really is not. You would not believe the free meals we get when he just says "Excuse me, I really need to get back to work, do you know how much longer it will be?" The next thing we know the manager is falling all over him/herself apologizing!

Back to 50's I have told the server there before that DS(4) is shy and won't eat but she could pick on me all she wanted, and she backed off him quite a bit, and only made comments in passing about him not eating.

Back in '01, we did 50's P/T for the first time. We were there with another family..both families have a dd's the same age. The girls were 8 at the time. My dd is on the shy side but does like to join in the fun. The other girl is the complete oppsite. Well, we got Cousin Chris (don't think he has been there for awhile now). He was way 'out there' and over the top. He made me write an essay, on my napkin, explaining why we shouldn't put our elbows on the table. When my dd got her meal, Cousin Chris came over and started doing his rendition of the Alladin song, all the while shoveling fries into my dd's mouth. It was hysterical, but the other girl saw this and couldn't eat her fries fast enough. She was terrified that Chris would start on her. This is the only restaurant the other girl has said she doesn't want to eat at for our trip in Oct!!!
So....if the server notices that someone really isn't getting into the spirit of things, they will pretty much leave them alone and focus on those who play along!!! If this isn't the case, and the server does start playing with your dd, just catch the server's eye, shake your head..giving them the head's up to not play with her!

It was a great place for my super shy DD when she was small. The servers picked up on her shyness right away, and instead of picking on HER - they picked on DH and me, which got her giggling. :)

I think the CM's at 50's PT are pretty good at playing it up so shy kids feel like they're getting into the act, and not the target of it. :thumbsup2
