not a real accurate contrast cause one was when i was trying out the b&w parameter with the old lens( and i can't get it the same size) but i think the 50mmf1.8 (color)is sharper for sure than my old lens :thumbsup2

one single letter is all that stands between me posting or getting drummed off the dis photo board ;)

I agree, definatley more color in the top pic!

But they are not the same ornament. The center of the spear is different as well as the weld locations on each side of the center rod.

hmm i thought they were but i do have 2 identical bird feeder poles so i might have taken one of each?..

went out and checked and one the welds by the top are across from one another the other is not so they are the not the exact same pole, although they are the exact same design...( what do you expect from Aldi's stuff...perfection? :teeth:)
so sorry ,
the stupid raccons knock the poles out of the ground every time we forget and leave the feeders out overnight i must have put the one back in the others place...however they look the same in real life except for the welds. the top parts are the same...

however my point was imo the color one is sharper

i'm guessing ( just in case i'm wrong don't want to put anyone in atizzy about it :rotfl2: ) the hunk of junk is my rechipped sigma 28-80

Depends on which 50mm f/1.8 you are refering to. If it was a Canon, they have two models, the very much sought after Mark 1 and the ALL plastic one (mount and all)that has very little hope of living up to the original lens' quality.

I have an older Mark 1 and it is fast focus, sharp at 1.8, and built like a tank. It also sounds like a tank when it focuses, but that is just fine with me. And is worth more than it ever cost me new on eBay as well :teeth:

Pffffft...
raccons?
My dad rehung his sister's birdfeeder up higher on the tree because the bears kept getting it. He was on a ladder to hang it very high, and it was down and ravaged again the next day. So he measured how high it was, 11.5 feet in the air!!!
That is in Pensylvannia, Boy it is good to live near Chicago!

The 50 f1.8 MkII has all plastic outer construction and feels very cheap but all the lenses inside are glass. Construction aside, this is one of Canon's better lenses, and a real bargain at about $70.

Everyone should have one, especially if you plan to do any portrait work or low light photography. The 50 f1.4 is much better built but it's about 4x the price.

I had both, same picture quality. So I sold the original metal one for DOUBLE the price of the all-plastic ones new.

black bears can climb trees but i don't know how high,,,higher than 11.5 evidently...they spotted one right by us but hopefully they don't want my bird feeders...i live about 30 miles from Cleveland but evidently close enough to PA that the bears missed the "welcome to Ohio" sign and crossed the border

one thing about the focus on the 50mm...is it normal to have it not focus at all then bingo it focuses?...used to a zoom so not sure if it takes me getting the right distance away for it to focus or if the focus is working weird which makes me wonder if it could be my camera..hope i didn't mess something up using my weirdly focusing sigma. i can't hear it focus at all so either i am totally deaf or it's quiet...guess i can see how the new one works tomorrow

the camera needs a certain amount of contrast to be able to focus quickly. Maybe that was the problem...

the mk1 & mk2 have exactly the same elements and internal build design. the optical quality is the same. if you scratch/break the element on a mk1, they can still replace it it's very sharp, but the 5 blade aperture leaves much to be desired and it will turn highlights into little fuzzy pentagons if you're not careful. but still, for less than a hundred bucks, you can't go wrong with it.

it's also a great IR lens with no hotspot in the middle. so if you have a hoya r72, b&w 092, etc. you can obtain good results with it.

Oooooh, that sounds interesting. I have not tried any IR shots since the old Sony 717....
