We are headed out to CA to visit my inlaws this month. They are snowbirding in Palm Springs. DMIL turns 65 while we are there. I have no idea what to get her. I was thinking ugg slippers but I waited too long and the ones left on sale in her size aren't so cute.

Any ideas? She has expensive taste, which doesn't help.

Flowers? When you are 65, there's not a lot of "stuff" you haven't already purchased that you really want. Unless there's a small kitchen item she really wants for her second home?

Not that 65 is anything like 90, but when DH's great-aunt turned 90, he sent her 2 dozen long-stemmed red roses... She loved it!

Alternately, does she have any hobbies?

Snowbirding means they have to bring everything home, so I'd get something disposable...my best ideas are...

A Cookie Bouquet
An Edible Arrangements Fruit Bouquet

Both of these would let her share with her grandkids, which might also be something she'd love...

Does she have hobbies or likes to go somewhere special? Is there a place she misses when she is in CA? Gift cards are great for that.

Snowbirds typically keep both homes fully furnished, etc. I suppose some rent vs own.

I would opt for a nice bracelet or watch. Her age range would probably like something from Brighton.

Most snowbirds I know just rent for 2 months (mid-Jan to mid-March)...I suppose every area is different (probably depends how much winter you have to dodge where you are:)...

What about a gift card for a manicure or pedicure? Starbucks gift card? Is there any sort of membership or discount card you could get online for where they winter? If they own the winter home maybe some sort of fun sign or decorative item for it.

My age group! I have everything I need so gift cards to starbucks or Panera, manicure as someone else mentioned, my hair salon. Please, no more edible arrangements!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's only so much sour fruit on a stick I can eat. Don't want balloons either and would prefer a plant to flowers.
Someone gave me an alex and ani bracelet and although inexpensive, I liked the sentiment and it is casual for wearing in casual settings.

Yes this is what they do. Renting in Palm Springs jan- April. 3 months. They have talked about buying but don’t want to be tied to any particular place just yet.

I gave her a pandora bracelet a few years back and then charms for Xmas/bdays for several holidays. Then stopped for awhile because didn’t want to overdo it. Maybe will do another charm now.

So hubs and I tried telling them the last 2 years that we prefer not to do gifts for bdays for the adults. A card and phone call is sufficient. We mean for them to not buy for us as well, btw. It just isn’t fun trying to rack our brains to figure out what to buy when none of us need anything.
But it seems they don’t like that plan. I guess gifts is their love language.

Since the Ugg's didn't work out, how about some cute sandals and a pedicure. The weather is right for that in Palm Springs.

I can also recommend a cool restaurant there for breakfast or lunch if you're interested. Full disclosure: I'm related to someone, who is married to someone from the family that owns it. My family goes to PS every year and we love to go eat at this restaurant when we visit. You can pm me if you're interested, no worries if not :)

- 65 gold dollars - wrap in pretty tissue paper, then all in something related to her tastes (e.g., sand pail & shovel with flip-flops, jewelry box, pot/planter, plain box with pretty wrapping & candy, etc - dollar store stuff). alternatively, do $50 in the gold coins & 15 chocolate gold coins
- if you do a GC (maybe airlines GC?), consider putting it in a pretty luggage tag, passport holder, etc
- do you have any older photos of their family (MIL, FIL, DH & siblings) on vacation, etc? get one or two beautifully (double?) matted & framed for a memorable gift
- GC to ancestry.com or one of the other genealogy sites. Put the GC with a token of her heritage (think shamrock "something" for Irish, Godiva chocolate for Belgian, etc).
- If she ever expressed a desire to travel internationally, a "coffee table" style book (with lots of pictures!) about that destination, If she enjoys art, a book of that particular artist's works

ask your DH what his mom liked when he was growing up. you can gain a lot of insight there.
