50% Borrowing Restrictions Easing?

Has anyone had one of their reservations cancelled that used overborrowed points?
I think the the website has allowed people to overborrow in the past, and I've heard that some people have done that and then had their reservation cancelled as it says. So I wouldn't try it.
Have you asked MS recently?

Yes, I asked them on Friday and Saturday. Then we talked about when the rule would be lifted and both CMs lamented the fact that the rule is still in place and hoped it would be lifted soon. But no dice to making an exception 😑

I really hope it’s lifted by Nov. got 7month mark plans. And my points don’t fall into place until December. Hoping for Riveria.

When the rules are management can do whatever they want.
Except they can't if we hold them to account. They *cannot* make arbitrary rules regarding access for some and not others. There's even some debate about the legality of admitting resorts with resale restrictions into the club and this is nowhere near that controversial. "First-come, first-serve doesn't mean "only if we decide to allow you to borrow a dozen points" while simultaneously telling someone else no with no apparent difference.

I can vouch for another denial. I knew there was a possibility I wanted to take a trip this July for 83 points (August use year.) Since it wasn't 100%, I banked the 42 points I had for 2021, figuring if the trip came to be I would just borrow from the 2022 allotment (we have 100 points). Had no clue about this policy until I got to the screen when I wanted to borrow the 83 points yesterday. Called member services at exactly 9 AM and said that I never would've banked the points if I knew about this "temporary" policy since now I painted myself into a corner (who can pick out from all of the various notices they keep littering the site with?). They put me on hold for something like 15 to 20 minutes to check about exceptions, even if maybe to undo the banking, but they came back and said no. So now that means no trip. I am...displeased.

I contacted DVC via email requesting legal justification of this case-by-case nonsense - I was just denied borrowing over the limit. DVC is not in the pixie-dust business.
Yes, I too am concerned about the arbitrariness of it all. I don’t want DVC to be in the pixie dust business at all. I want the rules to be the rules, even if I stand to lose from that. I especially want the rules to be the rules when they make sense and to be re-evaluated when necessary.
It is a bit of a double-edged sword because as a Canadian I benefited twice from some leeway when getting help from CMs with trying to navigate point use and closed borders. The weird thing is that the offer came from the CMs, not from me and it was to move points across use-years. They had to ‘ask permission’ while I waited on hold and I was grateful to not lose my points but I didn’t like being made to feel that I was being gifted a secret and benevolent favour that only occurred because I had made the decision to call that day.

It's a waste of resources (*that we pay for*) as well - the running commentary on FB is to keep calling until you get a CM to agree :furious:

They wouldn't let me borrow 1 point over last month. I had to buy 1- one time use point. Pretty silly.

Just to add, case by case does not necessarily mean arbitrary...it may mean that there are certain situations that will warrant the exception and certain ones will not. For example, maybe they are limiting to trips starting in 2023...maybe only those who need no more than 10%.

I get that it is frustrating and hopefully ending soon, but we don't have official confirmation from DVC themselves that this is what is being done...just reports where people were given exceptions.

They should not be operating in the dark. They are playing fast and loose with the basic underlying tenet of DVC - first come first serve.

I think they system allows for exceptions, just like they have done with holding and late banking...I get not everyone agrees...
I'll post the response to my email here when I receive it. DVC should not be acting like TWDC.

I like the new wording. I feel like it could be helpful to many. I have been trying to figure out how I was going to book my 25th wedding anniversary trip because with banking and borrowing (50% limit) I am like 16 points short for the week booking and I want the 11 month booking window. I feel like I have a shot at getting it now because it is such a small ask and before I felt I didn’t have a shot. It’s not perfect but it is better.

It does certainly sound like most have been held to the 50% rule and that exceptions have been few and far between. They have the right to set the rules around borrowing, which, IMO, can include some level of flexibility, on a case by case basis. Like I said, when they waive holding for a member because they got COVID, it was an exception. When someone missing a banking deadline and they have allowed that person to bank late, its an exception. When they returned borrowed points because of a snowstorm, its an exception. So, in the scheme of things, I think they do the best to support members when situations occur, even when they may not be required to and in the long run, I personally like to know there is some case by case support going on.

Hopefully, the rumor is true that this will be gone by the end of June.

They are denying some ONE point borrows and allowing others dozens of points over the 50%. Maybe you'll get lucky and maybe you won't.

How about until the website doesn't let you borrow at all on your resale contract? Is that first come first serve?
Nope and they didn't do anything about it because no one put any pressure on them. They will act like it's 30 years ago and everything they do is proprietary until the membership stops allowing them to do whatever they want.

They allowed me to borrow 16 extra SSR points recently. I called in, they put me on hold for a while, and then said they would allow the one-time exception. I was booking at SSR, so maybe that went into the decision to allow--don't think there's a shortage of SSR units available.
That is awesome. I had to buy OTU points because they would not let me borrow. Plus side is I still have 1/2 my 2023 pts :)
