50% Borrow rule, why now?

At a time like now, where there is an abnormal availability of rooms due to covid, why restrict members from using their points? I would think the current goal of DVC should be to encourage the use of points now when there is availability thus reducing the amount of point available for use next year when we assume things will be somewhat back to normal. If a member wants to borrow, that should almost be encouraged. They can impose a borrowing restriction later when we have a glut of available points in the system.

I agree there should be some special rule for short term trips. I even sent an email to DVC with this suggestion,

Let a member book a new trip within 60 days, and borrow up to 100%. Do not let the member modify for later on so it’s not a work around of the rule,

If they need to cancel, the extra points are lost or limited to new trips 60 days or less but stuck in the UY.

I think when they made the rule they had no idea what would happen, but it seems like it would be helpful.

I agree with Sandi - it would be great to allow 100% borrowing into the short term. But when I think about booking next fall, in my Sept. 2021 UY that has only 9 points left after our family trip this past Christmas, I realize I can't borrow enough points from 2022 for the stay we would want. In other words, I can't borrow enough points to make the "competition" worse - that's why the restriction is still in place, it's for those stays that are still a year or more out. There are already plenty enough points out there in the 2020 and 2021 UYs that will need to be used.

And I think the current restriction has caused enough website issues. Don't need any more!

While it sounds like a good idea to allow borrowing more than 50% for trips in the near term, I have no confidence that it could be implemented without causing even more booking issues than we already have. I have fingers and toes crossed & am saving pixie dust so that it doesn't all cone crashing down when the current restriction is lifted!

Very good point. I was going to suggest it would require a call but we certainly do not need ANY more reasons to overwhelm the phone lines.

It’s hard to consider the reasoning but I think the availability and the “hospitality”is really what Disney is trying to restrict.... Every amenity including dining is very limited due to Covid . Housekeeping, security, transportation has to be balanced .for safety.

I would guess its because of Co-Vid and the closure of WDW and DL that there are so many point already backed up that future borrowing only makes thing much worse from a DVC point standpoint.

Yes... it seems backwards to me. If anything, it seems like borrowing should be encouraged, and banking limited.
That's because there are goals other than just reducing the number of available points in of the system. If you limit or stop banking, you do decrease the amount of total points available, but in a way that disproportionately affects a subset of the membership who had no opportunity to plan for that contingency. The system in place spreads the pain, albeit also imperfectly, as it has a greater effect on members with low point contracts who need to both bank and borrow. I think the current system is a pretty reasonable choice under the circumstances, though I think suggestion to re-open borrowing beyond 50%, especially for short term bookings, would make sense (if technologically feasible).

I agree with the current policy of limited borrowing of points. Had to bank so many 2019 UY points due to cancelled trips last year (have Oct & Dec UY).

Found rescheduling the same basic trips this year a bit more problematic at the 11 month windows (popular times/categories).

For the end of April (with higher point requirements) into May, a studio at our favored resorts just was not to be had at 5 - 6 months out. Booked a split trip placeholder & WL portion of it which did come thru at AKJV studio, a real shocker.

IMO, the idea of permitting borrowing for a relatively last minute DVC res, 2 months prior is something that should be considered.

As for the long holds on the website, likely that the ticket offer has clogged things up.

Completely agree, they should be encouraging borrowing as much as possible for near term reservations to get the rooms filled up and avoid a glut post-vaccine.

We just booked our Sept 2021 trip, and we too had the discussion of why only 50% borrowing. Once the initial frustration wore off, the accountant in kicked in... I *think* it may have to do with financials and cash flow. When they closed, obviously they had no income. They continued to pay cast members for a while, and obviously had other expenses as well. Now that things are slowly opening back up, they don't want to take up all availability to "points" and would encourage others to come too, and pay cash. They would also encourage DVC members to use what they have for points, and maybe buy the additional need points to make up the difference. Just my thoughts.

Because apparently Disney puts the B team ( to be polite) in dvc management. Or actually the C team.
