Travel and Disney Springs

For our 25th anniversary, we knew we wanted to take a Disney cruise. (I mean, it seems like we pretty much always want to take a Disney cruise.) We've cruised multiple times over the years to celebrate our anniversary and we wanted to check out Lookout Cay. We decided to make it a big trip and tack on a couple of days at Disney World at the end.

The cast of characters:
My DH
My DD - age 16, yes, we let her come along, we hardly see her onboard anyway
Me!

This was our 14th cruise with DCL and our third time on the Fantasy. Trip reports for the other cruises can be found in my signature.

We were originally going to fly in the day before the cruise, which was our actual anniversary (January 9) and have a nice dinner before embarking the next morning, but the weather forecast was looking concerning with a chance of icy weather. So we changed our flights, booked an extra night at our hotel and left a day early. It was a little hectic getting out that day, but we made it and arrived late in the evening in Orlando on Wednesday night. We took a Lyft to the Polynesian and found our room, got ourselves sorted out and went to bed. I had only 5 points in my DVC account, but I was able to buy some one-time use points and get a night added on to our studio at the Poly. I can't believe there was a room available that was exactly the same room type we had booked for the other night. Our backup plan was going to be the Hyatt but it was nice not to have to move and with the one-time use points the price ended up being identical.

The next morning we were able to sleep in a bit before having some breakfast, organizing our things for later, and relaxing in our room. Around noon, we made our way over to the new Polynesian tower and ate lunch at the new Wailulu Bar & Grill. We all enjoyed our lunch and DH and I had an especially yummy chocolate, banana, coffee dessert.

After lunch we hopped a bus to Disney Springs and did a little shopping, hung out at the new DVC Lounge, and ate some snacks. We returned to our room, changed for dinner and hopped the monorail over to the Contemporary. We got DD sorted out with some dinner at the quick serve cafe and then went for our anniversary dinner at Steakhouse 71. We had a nice meal, though not as good, we both agreed, as the last time we dined there. Still great, though.

When we were done, we met DD on the bridge between Contemporary and Bay Lake Tower to watch the fireworks. We took the monorail back to the Polynesian and got ready for the cruise the following morning.

Embarkation Day

We woke up early so we could get our luggage packed up and ready by the 7 AM pickup. We have found that when they say 7 AM luggage pickup, they literally mean 7 AM (and sometimes a few minutes earlier). Once the luggage was gone, we vegged in the room for a few minutes before going to the main building for breakfast and then meet up with the DCL transportation rep at 8:45 for a 9:15 departure.

We made one more stop before driving to Port Canaveral. I wish I could say that the trip was uneventful but there was a toddler screaming bloody murder the entire time. To the point at which I was actually concerned that something was wrong with the poor kid. The parents tried everything. It was awful for everyone. The poor kid finally crashed out with the ship in sight. Of course.

Check in and security was pretty chill and we didn't wait long for our boarding group to be called. We were sitting down for lunch at Cabana's at right around noon. When we finished lunch, it was too early for rooms to be ready and it was actually sort of chilly outside so we needed to find some indoor activities. We ended up going to Vibe for the open house and played some Guitar Hero. After that we began a game of Midship Detective Agency.

At 1:30 we went to find our room, put our stuff down and have a little rest before going up to the top deck to watch the rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. I had only found out about it by happenstance from another person I had been chatting with from our cruise meet group. The rocket launch was actually really cool to watch and I'm so glad that we went to see it.

At 2:30 I went to one of my favorite activities on the ship: animation class. I'm actually the only one of the three of us that likes it, but DH came with me anyway. After that we went and got some coffee at Vista before the muster drill at 3:15. After the drill, DD went to the sail away party and DH and I went to deck four to watch the Wish sail away. We were hoping for a horn battle. Alas.

Then DH and I went back to the room to unpack a bit and relax before going to Disney "Level 1" trivia. DD asked where we were and came down to The Tube to meet us there. We noticed a lot of these Level 1 trivia on the schedule and attended some of them as well as "Advanced" and I'm going to say I couldn't really tell much difference. We stuck around for the Silent DJ Party after that, but only for a couple of songs.

The show that evening was actually the Mufasa movie which none of us were interested in seeing so instead DD went off to Vibe and DH and I went to one of the lounges to listen to a violin player that we weren't really all that into and I'm just going to leave it at that.

We made our way to the atrium for a palate cleanser and listened to Soul Duo. We've been on multiple cruises with them and they are always wonderful. They both play multiple instruments and have a vast catalogue of songs. We listened to them up until it was time for dinner, which was in Royal Court and we were happy to find that we were with our requested server, Jay. We first met Jay on the Magic nearly ten years ago and this was our fourth time to have him as our server.

After dinner, DD went to Vibe and I went and learned how to draw the little green aliens from Toy Story ("ooooooooooh, the claaaaaw!") before we went to bed.

I love your daughter's Mickey ears!!! Looks like everyone had a great time so far!

At Sea

I woke up around 7:30, which is pretty late for me. I apparently needed the sleep! I put on my workout clothes and went to the gym, which was packed. I much prefer the gyms on the Classic ships. They are bigger, actually. But I usually stake out a particular spot on the Dream class ships and I went in to find that they had stuck a piece of equipment in that spot. There was already limited real estate and now more of it was gone. (I never saw anyone using that piece of equipment.)

I couldn't find a space to do my own thing so I went to deck 4. I didn't want to run, but I was able to find a nook in which to do a BODYCOMBAT workout. I was going to be teaching a new release upon arriving back home and I really needed to start getting it into my muscle memory. I'm sure I looked like a weirdo shadowboxing in a corner on deck 4, but I got it done. DH got up around 8 and he did run on deck 4.

We both got some snacks from Cabanas before returning to the room to shower. DD woke up around 9 and changed quickly to go run and meet C3PO, which she said was a lot of fun. After that at 9:30 we all went for sit-down breakfast in Royal Court where we had the longest breakfast service ever. Ever. Apparently they had misplaced our order and it didn't get done. It was a mess. We finally got back to the room at 10:45 (yes, over an hour later, insane).

We spent the rest of the morning doing laundry and relaxing in the room. I think DD went to Vibe. At 12:30 it was time for one of my favorite activities: Jack Jack's Incredible Diaper Dash. We had three heats with 4 babies in the first, 4 in the second and 3 in the third and then a final heat. It was some good baby racing!

After the babies were done racing, we went to Cabana's for lunch followed by Disney Tunes Trivia Live. This was actually a really fun trivia. The songs were all played live by one of the musicians on board! We didn't win but I actually had a really good time at that one.

We returned to the room around 2:15 and relaxed for a bit before grabbing some coffee and heading off to Marvel trivia. We actually did really well at this one but didn't win. DD went and did some pin trading at 3:30. It was crew member pin trading, but she said the pins weren't as good as the old officer pin trading that used to happen.

Then we did a bit of karaoke. DH did not participate and instead played mini golf on the top deck. Once karaoke was over, we went up and got some snacks and there was some kind of DVC thing in Cove that I went to. They let us pick any coffee drink in Cove we wanted and gave us some cute coasters. I already had coffee so I got some tea and it wasn't very good. Oh well.

The show for the evening was Aladdin, which we all attended because it's always a great show and this evening was no exception. After the show we returned the room to regroup before going to La Piazza to watch Soul Duo, which was my favorite venue to see them. The atrium is just too chaotic and the lounge has a more intimate vibe.

We left them at 8:15 to make our way to dinner in Animator's. The Crush show was less annoying than I remember so that was good. It probably helped that we weren't at a table right next to a screen. DD ducked out a little early to meet Belle (her favorite princess) and then went to Vibe. DH and I went to Majority Rules, which we've played before. I have a funny story about this. So the deal with this game is that they give you a question and you have to figure out what you think the majority of people will say. So, for example, the question may be "who is world's sexiest man?" So you write down your answer. You might write down Ryan Gosling and then if the majority of the people in the room also write that, you get a point. But the ones that don't win are actually really funny and the best part of the game. And this is in the adult club after hours so pretty much anything goes.

Every time we've played it, one of the questions is "what celebrity does the club host (person running the game) look like?" Yo Yo (he was hilarious every time we saw him) looked like the king of the gorilla people in Black Panther (M'Baku). We didn't win, but when he read ours he said, "that's actually my cousin!" I felt like more people should have said that, because seriously, that's who he looks like. Check out his Insta account and see for yourself: https://www.instagram.com/yoyomagic1/

Nassau

I slept in again. I think I never fully transitioned to Eastern time. Everyone else was still asleep and I opted not to work out. I decided to see if I could get a hot chocolate on Deck 11. There was no hot chocolate on Deck 11. Whomp whomp. Everyone else got up shortly thereafter and we went to Cabanas for breakfast. After breakfast, we went back to the room and got ready for the day.

This was our fourth time in Nassau and the last time we came we didn't get off the ship, (previous adventures include a city tour hampered by a national holiday with parade and a visit to the pirate museum). We disembarked at around 10:30 and made the short walk over to the Queen's Staircase. This large passageway between the old fort (Fort Fincastle) and the main city dates to the 18th Century and was hand carved by 600 enslaved men. For some reason there is a plaque there that says that it was carved by free men of African descent in 1830, but everything I can find online indicates that the workers were enslaved and it was carved in 1793. Not sure what's up with that plaque.

We briefly checked out Fort Fincastle but didn't go inside. It's a pretty tiny little fort and we decided we could see most of it from the outside. We made our way back to the main portion of town. DD needed to sit down and rest for a bit and we came across a Starbucks so we sat down, shared a drink and availed ourselves of the free wi-fi.

We got back onboard a little after noon, regrouped and headed to Cabana's for lunch. After that, DH and I went to Disney Parks Trivia Level 1. It was in O'Gills which was 21+ unless you were there to watch the football game that was on the TV. You couldn't participate in the trivia, however. Yeah, I dunno, it didn't make sense to me either. So DD went to do some crafts instead. We ended up not being able to find seats in O'Gills so we sat with another couple and teamed up. They were self-proclaimed Disney nerds and the four of us made a good team. We still didn't win, though.

We caught up with DD in The Tube where she was finishing a Thor paper craft helmet thing and we did some Marvel trivia. Level 2, maybe? We actually did well. It came down to the tie breaker. We still didn't win. By 3:15 we were tired of trivia and DD made her way to the Jasmine meet and greet and DH and I got some coffee. After enjoying our coffee we went back to the room to regroup.

After that, DD and I went and did some karaoke. Not sure what DH did. Relaxed in the room or maybe played more mini golf? By then it had been almost two hours since we had last eaten so obviously it was time for more food. While eating our snacks, we looked out over at the Margaritaville cruise ship (where it'a always 5 o'clock, apparently) docked next to us. It was in sorry shape and seemed to have a bathroom with floor to ceiling windows. Certainly nobody is going to use that thing...ope, okay, well, yes, yes they are. Multiple dudes did, in fact, use the toilet with a view. Also, what was with the guy up on the top deck wearing black pants, black boots, a black bomber jacket and black gloves. We called him "the assassin" and yes, you can see both the toilet and the assassin in this photo.

After our snack we caught some of Soul Duo in the atrium, but not for long because we needed to head to the show. The show that night was Frozen and we decided to go ahead and go, having no better options. After the show we went and played the family version of Majority Rules before DD had to go to Vibe for the pirate night flash mob rehearsal. We went to dinner and she joined us shortly thereafter in Enchanted Garden. We were all pretty tired so we just went back to the room after dinner and went to bed.

We are also doing this trip on the Fantasyfor our anniversary so I’m glad I found your report! Was the walk to the staircase and fort easy to do on your own? Is the pirate museum something we could do easily as well? This sounds like a good way to see some of the highlights of Nassau.

Glad to read through your TP too! We leave next Sunday for our 5-night and reading your TP is getting me excited.

I think you could easily do both if you either start earlier than we did or you find some place in town to have lunch. Both are definitely walking distance and easy to get to. I will say that Google maps had us go an odd way to the Queen's Staircase because it doesn't seem to know that there's a north entrance. If you have Google map you to these coordinates you'll take a shorter walk:
25°04'26.8"N 77°20'15.5"W

You want to go down Elizabeth Avenue vs. East Street to Prison Lane. We weren't the only ones that took this walk from the port but we took the route in the attached screenshot back and it was better.

Are the different levels of trivia a new thing? I went on DCL in September 2023 and I don't remember seeing different levels in the app

Yes! Maybe they decided that some of the trivia was ridiculously hard? I found even the level 1 trivia to be too hard sometimes, but then the level 2 Marvel trivia seemed easier to me than the level 1. So odd.

Lookout Cay

I woke up at 7:00 AM and went to the gym to see if I could find a space to do a workout. I carved a little space for myself and practiced a Shapes class. Everyone else got up when I was done around 8:00 AM and we all had breakfast in Cabanas before going to the Walt Disney Theatre to see if we could get DD* on an earlier golf cart ride down the pier so she could save her joints and energy for walking on the nature trail and doing a little snorkeling. When we had checked the day before, the only slot open was 11:30 AM but they told me that they might be able to accommodate her on an earlier cart if we were willing to wait standby.

(*My DD has a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, hyper mobile form, or hEDS. It causes a lot of different kinds of symptoms including chronic pain, joint subluxations, fatigue, and more. To a casual observer, she looks like a normal able-bodied 16 year old girl, but she is on daily pain medication and lots of walking can cause flare ups. It can be hard to have an invisible chronic disease so if you ever see anyone taking a golf cart that looks like they don't need it, you just never know what they might be struggling with.)

When we arrived around 9:15 AM, a group was just leaving and the crew members there said it would absolutely be no problem to get her on an earlier cart. I waited in the theatre with her until they said they had a cart ready and then I met up with DH and we disembarked together around 9:30 and made the half mile walk from the ship to the tram station. DD's cart came along after awhile and the timing was actually pretty good. She only had to wait for us for a minute or so at the tram stop.

We boarded the tram and went to the main portion of the island, arriving around 10:00 AM. It was not really clear where everything was and when we asked a crew member where we could find a map she said she didn't have any. So we wandered around a bit and found a big map around the corner. Not sure why she didn't direct us there. Maybe she thought we were asking for a paper map? We snapped a photo with our phone so we would have it handy.

We got our bearings and managed to find our way to the nature trail. The nature trail isn't too long but it was worthwhile because at the end of the trail is a really beautiful beach with some really cool rock formations and there weren't very many people. DD said she needed a break so I sat down with her after wandering around and taking some pictures and checking out the water. DH decided to keep walking and see if he could find the lighthouse at the tip of the island.

DH came back and I saw some people walking down the beach with snorkeling vests. I had brought our snorkels and masks but not vests so I walked down the beach to the lifeguard station and got us some snorkel vests. Thus equipped, we went out into the water which was cold at first, but we acclimated. We found some small patches of coral here and there with some little fish.

By 11:30 we were hungry and ready for lunch so we made our way to one of the restaurant areas. We all agreed the food was better than Castaway Cay. That bar isn't super high for us, though, so that isn't exactly high praise. After lunch we went to a little Junkanoo festival they had that was pretty cool. I really like how they left this island very natural and brought in some cultural elements, too.

We decided to make our way back to the ship around 12:30 (no problem getting a golf cart back for DD, while DH and I walked). We figured it would be a good time to ride the Aqua Duck without a wait. We were correct. We hung out on the pool deck for about an hour before returning to the room for showers.

Once we were all cleaned up, we began a load of laundry, had some snacks, and I attended another animation class. While we snacked on the pool deck, we watched people making their way (late) back to the ship. We didn't get underway until pretty late after all-aboard. I hope those people got a stern talking-to.

It was pirate night, but DH and I aren't super keen on the pirate menu so we had a reservation at Palo for 7:00 PM. DD got into her pirate outfit, DH and I dressed up for Palo and all of us went to see the show that night, which was a juggler named David DiMuzio. I don't think we had seen this juggler before, but he had a few elements of his show that were very similar to some other jugglers we've seen. We bugged out just a bit early to get to our reservation.

Our dinner at Palo was very good and our server was exceptional. We will definitely be asking for her when we're back on the Fantasy in June. After our meal we returned to the room, changed our clothes and realized we could catch the very end of the juggler's act from the second show that we had not seen earlier, so we did that. While we were at Palo, DD hit up the quick serve on the pool deck for dinner and attended a rehearsal in Vibe for the pirate flash mob.

DH and I returned to the room after the show and relaxed a bit before the fireworks. We usually go for the top deck for fireworks, but it was pretty full so we ended up down on the pool deck, but that ended up being fine so we could catch the flashmob, which happened after the fireworks at the dance party. DD stayed at the party for awhile but DH and I returned to the room to go to bed.

Castaway Cay

DH and I both got up around 7:15, got dressed and he disembarked to run the Castaway Cay 5k and I went to the gym, which was pretty empty so I had some space to do some strength training. While I was working out I got a notification that our parasailing excursion had been cancelled due to weather. Again. This was our third attempt and it's been cancelled every time. I've done it with my mom years ago, but DD has been wanting to go. We decided to spend a day onboard and enjoy an empty ship with everyone at the beach. The weather was sunny and nice, but DH did say it was a bit windy.

We showered and ate breakfast before catching the 10:30 AM showing of Moana 2. It was actually quite good! When the movie was done we went to Cabanas for lunch and found it full of people! During the movie it had started to rain and many people came back to the ship. Well, there goes our chill crowd-free day on the ship. It was probably for the best because they ended up adding a ton of activities to the schedule so we had a lot more to choose from.

After lunch, DH returned to the room for a rest while DD and I went to origami. We ended up making a star for the actual official activity and then we did a box, which the entertainment CM showed us while running a craft in the next time block. It was sort of a DIY craft so she was able to run both. She told us she just really loves origami and loves showing people how to do it. I liked the box a little better, I think.

After that, I met up with DH for coffee and I think DD went to Vibe because after coffee we went to make a coozie in O'Gills (adults only), which ended up just being a white coozie that they handed us with a bunch of Sharpies that were all the wrong colors for anything anyone wanted.

After that, DH came with me to draw Minnie Mouse. She's Mickey Mouse with eyelashes and a bow, but it was good to practice. I found an old Minnie I had done a few years ago (new one top, old one below) and I really have come a long way. Practice and repetition really does help!

After that we made a stop off at Guest Services to increase tips for our servers before returning to the room to do some packing. We decided to try our hand at one more trivia: Disney Level 2 trivia. We didn't win. After that we had a snack and returned to the room to regroup. The show for the evening was Believe, which DH decided to skip so DD and I went. After the show, we went back to the room to finish most of our packing up before we went to watch one last Soul Duo performance and say goodbye to them. We stayed and chatted a bit after their set, which made us a few minutes late to dinner, but we didn't have table mates and our serving team had a big table next to us that they usually were helping out each night when we arrived so it was fine.

We had our final dinner with our amazing team and DH and I went back to the room to finish up packing and DD went to Vibe to say goodbye to the friends she had made there.

Disembarkation, Mini Golf, Disney Springs

We had arranged the night before to come to first seating breakfast. Did we want to? No, but we had transfers we had to catch earlier than second seating breakfast would allow. I don't know how other people handle it. Maybe they also try to make a similar deal? Go to Cabana's? Our usual table wasn't going to be occupied so it wasn't an issue to show up for first seating.

We had breakfast and said goodbye to Jay and the team and disembarked. Re-entry was super easy and we didn't even have to get out our passports. They have some new facial recognition system. It made things go really quickly. We found our bus and thankfully, everyone was pretty much on time for the transfer with some folks sliding in right at the last second.

It was an uneventful ride back to Orlando and we arrived at our resort (Riviera) at around 10:30 and then we...didn't have anything to do. So we hung out in the lobby, did a little shopping and went on a scavenger hunt around the resort. We had originally been hopeful that we could take advantage of the new offer that Disney had to visit a water park on day of check in. Unfortunately, it was chilly, in the low 50s with a cold wind.

Instead we ate some lunch on site at Primo Piatti (I just love their vegetable skewer). After we finished lunch we got a Lyft over to the Winter Summerland mini-golf course. They have two 18-hole courses: winter or summer and both have a Christmas theme. We played all the way through winter and when we were returning our clubs, the CMs working there asked if we wanted to play the other course. There was practically nobody there. We didn't have anything better to do so we played all the way through the other course.

When we finished our mini golf, we got another Lyft over to Disney Springs for some treats and a little more shopping. We grabbed some coffees and got in the line for Gideon's because it wasn't too long. We probably only waited for 15 minutes or so. The interior decor was really cool but the cookies were just, well, cookies. I've made better ones at home. I'm not sure I understand all the hype.

We did some more shopping before grabbing a bus back to the resort right around 4 PM. I hadn't gotten the text that our room was ready so we checked at the front and just as we did, the room was ready. We went to our room only to hear crazy drilling noises coming from above us. Apparently the restaurant was getting a refurb. The noise was insane. I called guest services and asked them if there was another option and they got right back to us and offered to move us to the other side of the resort where it was much quieter.

We unpacked and got ready for our park day the next day and then hung out for a bit before going over to Caribbean Beach Resort next door to try dinner at Sebastian's Bistro. It was really quite good and we'll definitely be back. After dinner we went back to our room to find that the view we had during the day of the parking lot was actually a view of the sky over Epcot by night and we could see the fireworks!

We watched an episode of "What If?" on Disney+ before getting to bed so we could get a good night sleep before our day at Epcot the next day.

Walt Disney World

We spent two full days at Walt Disney World going to Epcot on Thursday and Magic Kingdom on Friday. The weather was a little chilly on our Epcot day, but beautiful on our Magic Kingdom day. We enjoyed some new experiences we hadn't had before such as the "Behind the Seeds" tour in the Epcot Land pavilion, a new dining experience (we tried Biergarten in the Germany pavilion at Epcot), a new ride (Tron Lightcycle Run, which is amazing and my new favorite thing), a new show (Epcot's new nighttime show "Luminous" which is absolutely stunning) and a reimagined favorite (Tiana's Bayou Adventure, formerly Splash Mountain). We experienced some of our favorite things like "Happily Ever After" fireworks at Magic Kingdom, a Dole Whip float (me), Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion (twice), Pirates of the Caribbean, "Festival of Fantasy" parade, caramel popcorn, cinnamon roasted almonds, and of course Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (we got a different song this time: Blondie, which is what I had been hoping for).
